SOPHIE THE SEAL! My dad used to take me here where I was a kid back in the late 90s.

My late dad is in this, the guy with the hat on ringing the bell. We thought it it could be the Isle or Wight where he was living.

Yes, Newport, Isle of Wight. Visit www.imagefilms.net to purchase DVD “Every Week Come Tuesday” which contains this clip.

Despite the title, not filmed on the actual Ventnor West branch which disappeared way back in 1952 but presumably on the wonderful Isle of Wight Steam Railway which has done such a great job of restoring the ancient engines and coaches. Opening shot looks like Ashey.

This is an EXTRACT from a DVD "All Stations to Ventnor West" . This clip shows the restored PUSH/PULL set that ran on the Ventnor West line. The DVD tells the story of the Ventnor West branch and features archive footage of the line from Merston onwards. The DVD can be purchased from www.imagefilms.net

@@imagefilms Thanks for the explanation - the nature of the connection of the clip to Ventnor West is not stated in the description of the video above. In fact your text above might be helpful as a header, as you've missed the opportunity to direct viewers of this extract towards your website so that they could purchase the full video. They might well have been interested!

My late dad is in the video but we lost contact with him in the 60s. We know he worked at some cattle market but we thought it was the Isle of Wight where he was living at the time.

Great to see that in those days The ship Ashore pub was open. It's still there but lies empty - though I have been told the Dabells just use it for their staff. It opened as Tea Rooms around 10 years back but it didn't last long so I guess it wasn't viable. Fantastic footage from 1965.

The White House and the property to the right of it have been demolished. The roundabout on the other side was removed some years back and the area fenced off. The concrete wall you see behind it was 'Mission Control' and this still remains.

I grew up in New Street just s short walk away from the Market. Was it Tuesday Market day? I remember Thursdays as early closing when shops shut at mid day. No 24/7 open times then. I loved the Market and never missed visiting the flower market on the opposite side of South Street. You can just see the green entrance doors early in this video. The smell (scent) was amazing. Thanks for the memory

Happy to see this! I do wish the original sound was included rather than added music though. I miss the whole experience and the sounds were a huge part of that.

No original sound as the film was shot on a silent camera.

Wonderful video, I used to love going down there in the 50s. Of course a lot of the animals went straight to the abattoirs in Scarrots lane making it all wonderfully local. Of course now animals nearly all have to go to Winchester to be slaughtered. Shame😟

Access to the beach down the Chine was still possible in the late 1940s/early 1950s. Much of the Chine and surrounding cliffs have collapsed since then. The tourist facility in its present form, will eventually disappear.

Bloody shame it's not there anymore, , get rid of morrisons and marks and expensive and put the market back where it belongs, , , I remember the market very well as a kid we used to go and see all the cattle being sold off and being loaded in to the back of the trucks and of to their new homes, , my friend has a video of the market from the 70s just before they closed it down to make way for the new builds , and if im not mistaken Newport football club was just behind the market place before that was moved to where it is today, .,.,.,.,. Great upload 👍👍
