@@collegeviability5570 No worries! I love your podcast! I left a small, private, and financially strapped institution in 2020. I’m now working at a very large research institution. I miss the atmosphere at small, private colleges, but I’m afraid that many just aren’t viable and have a short future. I’m planning to buy your private college viability app to determine which institutions might be worth applying for roles at.

Drexel has (or used to have) a co-op program where students work while they are in school - most of their programs are longer than 4 years.

Thanks, Aaron. I suspected something like that. That 6-year graduation rate number is really good. Very few can match it.

I'm expecting that the "very rare" situations will become increasingly common in the future. If one looks at the most recent college closures, I would guess the indicators mentioned here by Matt are all consistently below the 25th percentile for a number of years. As Matt posted a few days ago, the "watch list" for institutions like this is long, and appears to be getting longer.

Thanks Josh. Absolutely. Keep in mind that the so called demographic cliff is not here yet. The first smaller cohort of high school graduates just finished 9th grade. This is almost certainly going to get worse for schools that are struggling now with a relatively robust overall enrollment in higher education (4 year colleges in particular). I will post the student census as a reminder in a minute.

Great analysis on the college navigator website. The overall financial strength of a college is very important. However, when colleges or any other business needs to cutback in some areas, odds are they will cut back on the least profitable/slowest growing areas. Make sure your student understands that just because they start at a college that offers their preferred major, doesn't mean that major will be around four years later. Great information--Gary. Thanks.

Your data are interesting, but what's the point of ranking by raw numbers? A tuition & fee revenue decrease of $35 million at a school like DePaul is qualitatively different in consequence than a tuition decrease of $35 million at a school like Columbia of Missouri. The former has annual tuition revenue that's 5x the latter. Surely you see this, and rankings arrayed by decrease as a portion of year 1 tuition revenue (or of 8-year average tuition revenue) would be both more telling and far different. This use of unscaled data appears consistent across your video reports.

Good info. There will be more that close in IL in the next few years. Eureka is one that is in real jeopardy of closing next year. They have debt service they can't cover a la Iowa Wesleyan. There are several others like Monmouth that are in real trouble.

Keep in mind that most of Drexel's programs are 5 year degree programs b.c. they have mandatory cooperative working requirements that last one year. Therefore, the 4 year grad rate is very misleading as most students are on the 5 year plan.

Thanks for the comment. I have a list of 230 private colleges I believe are at a high risk for closure. Of course, not all will close; but the numbers are staggering. What will happen to higher education if scores or hundreds of colleges close in a matter of months? Tough to predict the reactions. The safest one is that the public colleges we see enrollment increases as more and more families choose to stay away from private colleges.

I second the comment about Cardinal Stritch now closing in Spring 2023. This video was drawing on pre-pandemic data and still clearly showed major issues in enrollment loss and revenue. Their president must live in denial with his peanut butter spread excuses.

All colleges public and private, with except of the few mega public universities or private multi-billion-dollar endowments, have lost population. It's all about birthrates. Your channel will continue to lose credibility until you realize that this issue is a universal one. It's not per se a management one. They are all scraping the bottom of the barrel of a declining population. The colleges system as a whole is suffering the effects of educating women to have less than 2.11 children per couple.
