@@downonthestour it's weird how these are going for the chop but their cousins the class 150s and other sprinter type trains still are in operation as it's not the stock that needs replacing it's train fares need reducing and timetabled amending! as we're one of the world most wasteful counties in the world for scrapping rolling stock as older stuff id more reliable than this foreign 💩 of today!!!

These HST sets should still be running on the mainline network especially given the capacity struggles there are all over the country. Very short sighted of the DFT for forcing retirement until replacements were in operation. But it's good to see they've found work not just the welders iron

The current plan is to electrify the whole Midland MainLine, however Leicester & Nottingham stations provide significant obstacles to achieving this due to the main road & station fronts going over the lines. Normally bridges would be reconstructed to be higher, but this isn't possible at these locations due to the buildings & main roads being on top. I think there is significant challenge with lowering the track bed as that involves changing the drainage systems.

@@bus131 Hi, Thank you. I know the plan is to eventually electrify the whole line. I agree there are significant challenges in order to get the wires into Leicester and Nottingham stations. I think my thoughts were more like, why didn't they do these challenging bits first, before the other easy bits. If you think about the usage of these newly completed electrified sections they won't get any usage until the wires get to Leicester, no Electric train is going to only go as far as Wigston and then terminate and head back south! It just seems a bit odd, especially as they haven't even started working towards Leicester from Wigston. I wonder if they will use an overhead bar system like they do through the Severn Tunnel instead of wires? Anyway, I'm interested to see what they do, the Midland Main Line being my local line...............All the best Dave.

@stretchedits Hi, bi-mode class 810s, which are currently under construction, will be able to use the wires between Wigston and St Pancras. The trains will be able to switch from diesel to electric power while the train is in motion. Hope that explains it a bit. 🙂

Yeah, the remaining Class 58's were exported to France, but have sadly since been scrapped as of last year. 58023 is the only one left in mainline service, but it only works yard movements at the moment. Two other Class 58's are still undergoing restoration, and will hopefully be back out soon.
