One of the primary reasons for me switching from pen to pencil for most of my writing is the whisper of graphite against paper. The Pencil King is going into my next Musgrave order. Such a beautiful pencil!

Hi, I don’t know your name but I assume it’s Kevin from the comment section. Hi Kevin, I just wanted to share something about me and my love of pencils. When I was young, my school didn’t allow pens upto the 3rd grade. I hated pencils and wished when the 3rd grade would come and I would be able to use pens. I loved pens. One more information is that I was never good at math since my childhood. Currently, I am doing my PhD in mathematical economics. The reason I chose this field is quite intriguing. My professor, saw me that I was struggling with maths. He is a great observer of human nature and realized what was the mistake that I was making. Math needs practice and when you practice you make a lot of mistakes. When you use pens to practice, you make mistakes and the paper becomes disgustingly ugly. To keep the paper neat and clean, I did not do much practice. My professor suggested that I should start doing math with a pencil. I started doing it and whenever I made a mistake, I can erase it and hence keep the neatness of the paper on which I am doing the math. It helped me unbelievably. I, for the first time in my life, fell in love pencils and with math. Now I love doing math with pencils and I became exceptionally good at it. I don’t know why but now I love pencils. I have even bought some pencil extenders so that I can use the pencils till the last moment. I just wanted to share this with you because I think you are also a lover of pencils. Godspeed.

Hi RexImperatorArnab - thank you for your comment. Yes, my name is Kevin and it is a pleasure to meet you through my channel. Thank you for watching and for sharing your very interesting story of how you have come to love pencils through your practice of mathematics. This is wonderful and your professor was wise to suggest that you use a pencil to keep your paper neat while you practice. While I don't do much math in the course of my everyday life, I do a lot of writing every day. And I make my share of mistakes - even after writing for more than 50 years - and I love the ability to make those mistakes disappear off the page and be replaced with something better. Pens are wonderful and have their place, but pens can fail from time to time. A pencil, no matter how old or used, will still write. That's beautiful to me. Thank you again and I wish you all the success as you earn your PhD. Best wishes, Kevin

Just wanted to say thank you for inspiring me to get back to practicing my cursive handwriting as I journal in the morning. I had gotten so used to writing in block letters from my time as a comic book artist with Marvel and other companies that I nearly forgot the joy and fluidity from writing in cursive. I am not a pencil collector on your level of the game, but certainly a lifetime pencil user as both an artist and writer/editor. Upping my art and pencil supply last December I purchased some Blackwings and vintage Eberhard drawing pencils. Which lead me to discovering several pencil review channels, including your own. I just placed my first order with Musgrave thanks to your channel and will likely start adding some pencil reviews of my own when I rekindle my KZbin writing channel this spring. Thanks again for the inspiration and would love to hear more of your handwriting tips.
@DinnerForkTongueКүн бұрын
That is a lovely story, thank you for sharing! And by all means, keep at it with cursive. It is definitely elegant, flowy and faster than any shorthand blockprint script. And yes to more reviews, bring them on. We could always have a new pair of eyes and a new opinion on stationery. I have only one tip, personally: if you ever go mechanical rather than woodcase for any reason, do not buy Uni's Kuru-Toga line of mechanical pencils. The rotation mechanism is not fast enough for cursive on any of the models.
@storydtechtiverobertjones464Күн бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I don’t use mechanical pencils for much other than very technical detailing in my art. Which I have a nice Bastion .07 mm I may review at some point just because it’s very comfortable to hold compared to some other mechanical pencils I’ve used in the past. I prefer wood pencils for most things. I’m thinking of reviewing both handwriting pencils and drawing pencils and those that are capable of crossing between. Blackwing and some of the Musgrave pencils I just ordered fit both categories, for example. So there would basically be a fusion of handwriting and drawing using particular pencils. As a graphic artist who worked for Marvel and DC Comics, I figure that would be a way for me to add some variety and possibly diversify and switch things up a bit. I’m in agreement with Kevin on the darker softer pencils and also use some harder leads for roughing out the art before getting into major details because they’re easier to erase. So I’m up for and recommendations across the graphite spectrum because I’m always experimenting and trying to keep things fresh and interesting. Always analog over digital. It’s just so much more tactile and produces a better result, in my opinion!

Hi Robert! Thanks for your comment and I'm glad that you are revisiting your cursive handwriting! In an era when people are writing less by hand, I think it's important to keep cursive as an option. I always love hearing from artists who use pencils for creating artwork, something I'm not familiar with but fascinated by the talent. I think there are a number of pencils that can work well at cross purposes - drawing and writing. I will look forward to reviews in the future! It's a wonderful community of pencil lovers here on YT, and your voice and perspective as an artist will be a welcome addition! I think I have a handwriting exercise video scheduled for the next few weeks with a general focus on formation of lower and upper case letters. Thanks so much!

When I was in school very few teachers had electric pencil sharpeners but the ones that did typically had the Boston Style with the simulated wood grain and it would only accommodate one pencil size. I recently came across in an antique store an old Panasonic pencil sharpener that lights up when the pencil is sharp. The old Panasonic doesn't have the safety feature that stops IT from working if the Shaving tray is removed but I think that one was more intended for office use rather than for classroom use.

You're very welcome, and glad that you also liked these! As a mechanically-inclined, DIY-type person I've always been fascinated with how things work. There's a cylindrical button that surrounds the lead at the tip, so as it wears down the button is depressed, then when it's lifted from the paper the lead advances a little bit. It's basically a micro button press every time you write, with a micro lead advance every time it's lifted from the paper.

Really good model. REALLY good design. Pleasant familiar shape in the hand, graphite exposure level that accommodates any writing pressure, very few exposed moving parts, and outright stated to be refillable with instructions. I would replace every single Sharpwriter on the entire planet with Sensematic+'s if only I had the power to do it. The claim of being the only auto-advancing pencil is a bold one, but now unfounded. We have the Pentel Orenz Nero and the Uni Kuru-Toga Dive, two lovely and versatile auto-advancers that come in multiple lead sizes according to the user's needs. But at the same time, a simpler mechanism is always better, and on that front the Sensematic+ wins. If that lead inside it is Dixon's proprietary fare, that is fantastic performance. The trace and erasability have earned the grade *A* you gave them.
@AlwaysAnalog3 күн бұрын
Thanks, DFT! It is a really good design. The graphite inside is what came from the Dixon factory, so it gets credit. Although a viewer indicated that they refill theirs with whatever 0.7mm leads they have about. So these could be further upgraded with a nice Pentel or other Japanese lead. The auto-advancing mechanical pencil is fascinating, and while there are others out there, I don't know that there are other options at the low price point of the Sensematic. Thanks!
@LouiesWorkshop3 күн бұрын
I remember seeing these at Kmart about 6 years ago. I found them to be not as durable as i wouldve liked. After a while, the lead can just be pushed back in and skips across the page poorly.
@DinnerForkTongue3 күн бұрын
Sounds like graphite dust buildup making the mechanism's grip on the lead slippery. If you have one that does that, try blasting it with air, and replacing whatever lead is loaded in it with Pentel Ain/Ain Stein or Mitsubishi Uni Smudge-Proof. These leads are notoriously dust-free, and a single lead of Ain Stein HB hard* or F will last you _ages._ *: there are three HB's in the Ain Stein line - HB soft, HB and HB hard

Hi Louie - so far the pencil has performed without an issue. I'll see if this problem develops over time. Thanks!

Interesting! My experience is a bit different with these. Perhaps I write at too oblique an angle, but I often have found there's not enough lead showing to leave a mark. I suppose it's user error. I would prefer a bit more lead showing, or the ability to adjust the length within certain parameters. Thanks, Kevin!
@AlwaysAnalog3 күн бұрын
Hi MAMO! I do agree that there is very little lead showing at the point. I'm assuming that is by design but I wonder if there is a way to "prime" the lead out manually (pull some out) to a point where you like it and then it will maintain that feed of lead through the auto-advance system. I'll have to spend some time with it and see if that's possible. Thanks!

News 600. Pencil King. Songwriter. Sketcher. If you want an USA made soft pencil, you want Musgrave. Makes me wish they produced mechanical pencil or leadholder leads, really. I have a question, Kevin: have you ever tested a pencil that was so soft, so smooth, so high in carbon, that it felt squirrelly on your grip, like it's trying to run away from the direction you're pointing it to? I have, and it takes some real getting used to when I need to use one such pencil, which is mildly annoying. I'm guessing it could be related to writing pressure: the less pressure, the less friction, so the more slip. I write light, so my cutoff is 2B - if you have a cutoff at all, it's definitely on a much bolder grade than that.
@AlwaysAnalog5 күн бұрын
Hi DFT - All the pencils you mention are part of the soft and smooth Musgrave family. I agree that they really know how to make this kind of graphite well. Regarding using a pencil where I felt it was hard to control, I recall trying an 8B pencil, not sure brand, and it was just too soft and unmanageable for handwriting - or at least my handwriting. Of course, the pencil was intended for drawing and sketching, so my effort in trying to make it into a writing pencil was unwise. I feel I can write with up to a 4B, but even that pushes the limits for me. Thanks!

And if you don't love it (but I suspect you would like it much more than the ballpoint), you'd be out 88 cents which is nothing.
