I very much appreciate that you usually include the Mars in your reviews, because I haven't really used anything else since circa 1980 and that's unlikely to change. Nice to get confirmation that it's still a contender. Musgrave's retro presentation is pleasing, though.

The Mars is an excellent baseline for comparison: competent, affordable and ubiquitous. Only downside is it takes some force to rub it on the paper, it's a grippy one.

Hi, Kevin! Like you, a good eraser is a must for me. The Pentel is my favorite and most used eraser, but I've also come to enjoy using the Apsara Rub-a-long and the Clear Radar Seed eraser. I get the Apsara from Amazon and the Clear Radar from Daiso. I feel like my erasers don't age well and become ineffective over time. Is there a way to prolong the life of an eraser? Is there a preferred way to store them? Thanks for the video. I always enjoy watching! Have a lovely day, Kevin!
@AlwaysAnalog2 күн бұрын
Hi Nancy! You can never go wrong with the Pentel. That is also my most-used eraser. Haven't tried the Clear Radar Seed. I don't know how to really prolong the effectiveness of most erasers. Exposure to air naturally dries them out over time. Although I have had a couple of Pentels that lasted a long, long time and erased well right to the end. Pentel makes this pencil cap erasers which I have also come to really like, since most attached erasers are pretty bad. Thanks!

My Bic Cristal Up pens arrived and there is a lot to like about them especially the nibs which match the ink color, plug, and cap colors. I wish this idea could be applied across the entire Bic Cristal line. Unfortunately the Bic Cristal Up ink, while very smooth for writing, seems runnier and wetter than the classic Bic Cristal high viscosity ink. I like the more classic thicker ink for its shading capabilities. For this reason I may not be re-buying this particular model.

I've had the misfortune of buying a dozen (though the incompetent shop shipped a box with only 11 pencils in it) of these in HB grade, and yes, they're as hard to erase as the Palomino Blackwing 602. Also, at the lower back of the box says: Designed and produced under the guidance of: ROYAL TALENS Made in China. EDIT: The fact that they stamped "HOLLAND" on the pencils and omit that it's actually made in China is a questionable look on the company's integrity. At least Tombow has the decency to stamp (no foil or ink whatsoever) "MADE IN VIETNAM" on theirs.

Thanks for the review. I have used them in 0.5 mm and 0.38 mm. The black pen comes in a fully black barrel too. The 0.38 mm is scratchy if you don't write at the correct angle and if you write fast. The 0.5 mm is more smooth. I guess the 0.7mm may be the smoothest but will run out of ink quickly.

I can see why they say it's a medium point: the width of the trace left by it matches a 1mm ballpoint with oil-based ink very closely. In saturation, the blue is looking very blue on camera, though the ink dispensing is a _little_ bit inconsistent. Black is more uniform on that. Could be because the blue is not quite "broken in", but who knows. Good pens for two quarters and a dime each. I'd take them if I were to write frequently on thicker paper.
@AlwaysAnalog11 күн бұрын
Hi DFT - these aren't pens I would usually pick up, but since they were so reduced I thought I'd try them. They do have a fairly wide line for a 0.7mm and I agree it's likely the ink formulation that allows for that. Thanks!

I have several of these pens, which I use only for check-writing: I was pulled in by the promise to save me from the nefarious check-bleaching fraudsters. In my experience, these tend to skip, and are less forgiving when it comes to writing angle. I find the Bic Cristal writing experience to be far, far superior. Thanks, Kevin!
@user-fg6ro13 күн бұрын
Check the date code on the refills: YY-MM (year-month). If they are more than 3 years old, they may not write well. In India, we get these only in 0.5 and 0.38 mm (and definitely not in stores). However I haven't faced skipping yet. Uni-ball Signo pens skip very less. The Signo gel pens are available in 0.7 mm.

Out of curiosity, Jeremy, what do you think of the Apsara sharpener design when it comes to the Sketcher? I'd personally say it puts the perfect point style (long and not super sharp) for its 4B grade core.

With all the expense the Draughting pencil gets, Im glad there are people who still appreciate it. This looks to be a pretty good homage. Imma gonna try this one Also a bit of history about the Draughting 314: Its originally made by Eagle Pencil. There are three types of 314s in the wild (eBay) the more earlier 314 with the old Eagle logo (seen in the old Mikados), the newer logo version (seen in more early 40s Mirados among others) and the Berol ones. And yes, the consensus for the General's edition is that it sucks. It is softer and chalky than the original. So yeah these are a good alternative for people who want the old school Draughting
@AlwaysAnalog18 күн бұрын
Thanks for the background information, CRx! I didn't have much experience with the Draughting pencil until I heard from Jeremy, but I can see why he missed the old version. As mentioned, a beautiful pencil. Nothing more to say. Though I should note, that Apsara sharpener (that Duffy also used) is perfect for the Sketcher. The point is long so as it wears down, the trace doesn't widen quite as dramatically during use, and the relatively blunt tip fits a 4B pencil, those should be awl-sharp at most - a needle point would be wasted on it. For a 4B pencil, that erases like a high quality HB. With the difference i mind, I'd give the Sketcher no less than an A- bordering on straight A.
@AlwaysAnalog18 күн бұрын
Hi DFT - I agree that the Apsara sharpener is made for a pencil like this Sketcher. I did erase nicely for a 4B, but I'm usually conservative on my eraser ratings because it often depends on the paper being used. That said, the graphite lifted better than most other 3 or 4 B pencils I've used. Thanks!
@lordmaul320 күн бұрын
The HB pencil is basically a #2 pencil that you would by at and stationary dept. at the store. When it comes to graphite drawing pencils there's a value scale. The H pencils are hard and light, and B pencils are soft and dark. Like a 6H is lighter than a 2H, and a 6B is darker than a 2B. There's also H (hard and Light), F (Fine or firm), and B (black) pencils. HB is right in the middle of the value scale.

@greekveteran271518 күн бұрын
@@GoodOleDFT Yes.that's what I'm talking about! I also got a Pilot S10 that came with B leads last week! Pilot leads are the smoothest. If you think inability to understand cursive is bad, Kevin, what if I told you some (read: many) kids I deal with every day don't know how to use a _keyboard_ properly? They don't even know the differences between Ctrl, Alt Gr and Shift for printing out special characters. I have to guide them constantly. They were born and raised with smartphone touchscreen typing, and now they're becoming adults and struggling with this ubiquitous essential technology that is impossible to be replaced anytime soon. Unlike cursive with its blockprint alternative, there's no effective replacement for a keyboard. Before anyone calls me an old man yelling at clouds: I'm not even 34 years old yet. These people are barely one generation removed from mine!

Hi DFT - as someone who has worked in higher education for more than three decades, I could spend lots of time with examples of how students' ability to write, read, comprehend, etc. has changed. I still get inspired by the star students who have mastered these basic skills, and I know they will find success. The problem is that smart phones, social media, video games, etc. have essentially rewired people's brains so our level of comprehension is razor thin and our attention spans are even smaller. The irony is our little community here is possible through the same technologies, so like so many things in life, social media is a double-edged sword.
