I own this kit, and I can attest it does not sound this bad. To be clear, I'm not talking about the drumming (which is amazing) I'm talking about the sound of the actual kit. It must have been the way the audio was mixed, but this kit has a very full sound and is pretty darn close to the sound of a DW kit.

Since my first Yamaha Studio Custom kit, I’ve always gravitated back to birch. The punchiness and the sound has always sounded superior to everything else. Also, yeah…too much talking over the sound.

I bought the 24,13,16 after listening to JP and the other dude demo the Concept Maple Classic. Then I bought the 18,12,14 with matching 6.5 x 14 snare. Ebony shells with ebony wooden rims. They were hard to find. I fell in love on first listen. What a sound. Thanks PDP.
