I really want to get up to Lake Superior this summer and try my hand at some beach mining. Haven’t been to Lake Michigan for mining yet either though.

You can recover micro gold from the black sands at Van Buren State Park on Lake Michigan. Early spring is the best time to pan for gold.

I am going to get out there for sure when it warms up. I went there last year and noticed an abundance of black sand.

Thank you, I really appreciate that! The history aspect of metal detecting has always been a big draw for me. That's cool that you are also into gold prospecting, which part of the state are you in? Gert's is pretty fun, and if you prospect for the best spots, you can find pretty good gold. Not to mention it is nice to meet other people in the same hobby.

I live near Caberfae (Cadillac Area). Only a couple areas you can legally prospect here unfortunately.

Unfortunately, this state is very restrictive. It can be challenging to find good legal areas.

Thank you! It was stamped "gold filled" which I believe is an old way of saying gold plated. It is probably an old ring that was recently lost. Still was pretty cool to dig though. Rang up the exact same as a quarter on my detector.

I honestly have not prospected near the Detroit area. I am originally from the Saginaw Bay Area and I heard there is gold in some of the creeks around there, haven’t tried there yet though. There are really trace amounts of glacial gold throughout the state.
