Before 1980, Dr MacArthur preached faith alone. After he completed his months-long sabbatical where he submerged himself in Puritan theology, he taught through Matthew where he then unveiled a ‘different gospel’ (Gal. 1:6-9) called Lordship Salvation (which can found on his ministries website). The difference between Lordship and faith alone is simple: MacArthur took NT sanctification mandates for discipleship and front-loaded them into justification. Instead of of just believing in Christ for eternal life, the unbeliever was now expected to produce fruit, be obedient, “repent of sin” (stop sinning), and show by-his-works that he was, indeed, changed or as Calvinism states, ‘one of the elect.’ Lordship requires a 9-step life long process of ‘change’ in which the Christian must now work to KEEP his salvation, and his elect status. Failure to produce fruit within any of the 9 stages = loss of eternal life. In common theological parlance we would refer to Lordship as Roman Catholicism. As Dr Earl Radmacher (Editor, NKJV Study Bible) stated, “MacArthur paved the road back to Rome, not Wittenburg.”
