We had just got on station when they called landslide.... It was the last flight of my first deployment in Iraq. A flight I will never forget. For what it's worth to his family, his picture has been in every JOC I've ever been in....he is definitely not forgotten. I always used to look for him anytime I went someplace new and there he is. I'm retired now, and although I never met him in person, I never forget about Ricky. I remember his buddy telling a story about doing some tile work or something in a kitchen.... I don't remember all the details... it's been a while and I'm old now... but basically Ricky's friend told a funny story about how it was the first time a Mexican person was relaxing and drinking a beer while a white person was working for him, and how it's usually the other way around. I know it's probably not politically correct these days, but despite the circumstances his friend made us all smile. It's been a while, but every October I can't help but think about that night. I wish the best for his family... and hope to one day make it out to Kentucky and pay my respects to him.

A friend and I have to play this and fanfare for the common man today at a school assembly. Vets from our county are coming in and I’m nervous to mess up in front of them.

Don't worry about it - just go out and play the very best you can. A chipped note in the context of what it is, isn't a big deal.

30 years ago while serving in the military I was put on funeral detail. The first couple of funerals we did they had a single bugle player. A live bugler will make anybody break down. We did our 3rd funeral and they had 2 bugle players. One echoed the other. Omg that was the hardest funeral of my career. Tough to stay disciplined while listening to that. We all had tears rollin.

As a member of the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS DRILL TEAM AND HONOR GUARD i heard that haunting song and saw the faces of 19 families . the pain in their eyes is forever etched in my mind, and in 2000 i stood on the other side of that line and heard it as it was played for my son

I will be sounding this with a very accomplished trumpet player for 911 this year at a special event. She will play the lead and I will play the "echo" part. Thank you for this. I play Taps for a number of veterans funeral services each month with BAA but this will be my first echo in a long time.
Everyone else here: *old men talking about how they cry at this song Me: "I want this played at my funeral, but on kazoo."

Truly haunting and inspirational. It's interesting that DoD's official position is "Taps" is only intended to be played by a solo bugler, so "Echo Taps" isn't authorized.
@patrickgleason66103 жыл бұрын
I could point out that I was an active duty Army trumpet player for 10 years and have rendered Taps - always solo - hundreds of times. This was something I did on a whim one night because someone had mentioned how a friend and I played Echo Taps for my hometown local Memorial Day service. Regarding the DoD position on Taps, I'm well aware of that. A good acquaintance of mine, Jari Villanueva, who literally wrote the book on military bugling, has advised me that while Echo Taps is never authorized for a funeral, it's ok to use for a memorial service that's not specifically tied to the military.
