@wxxds5 ай бұрын
AAAAAAAAA THANK YOUUUU THIS MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME (love your art!! we are mutuals on tumblr). about the parallel, i truly think that was the whole purpose of uhtred losing his sword in the film! uhtred is always considered as "alfred's sword" and as someone who belonged to him and i doubt it's a coincidence that he found his sword again right before the battle that fulfilled his king's dream, perhaps it was alfred sending it back to him as a "don't forget that you are my man and that's why you are on this battlefield" or something
@hikaruchen08045 ай бұрын
@@wxxds Yayyyy I know it’s you!!!! You’re talented in a criminal way srsly bc THIS. THIS KILLED ME AND MY LIL ALHTRED HEART AND I’M NOT EVEN MAD AT IT. LIKE NOT EVEN A LITTLE. About serpent’s breath aaaaaa everything you said!!! I rewatched SKMD today and yes literally this. Uhtred was a bit (sort of) straying from Alfred’s dream at the end of s5 by not pledging Northumbria to Wessex, as though we all know he was binding his time and it was the better way for England, that was basically also what kept England from united, too. So serpent’s breath reappearance kinda felt like a way to remind Uhtred it’s time to recall his duty, as serpent’s breath was there in every battle he fought for Alfred’s dream. And oh I love this interpretation of Alfred sending it back hahaha it’s basically him saying “Not you losing your sword at this very moment dummy NOW GET IT BACK AND GET THINGS DONE” Btw I never paid much attention to the lyrics before but now you use this song for them and OMG. THIS IS THEM. THIS IS THEIR SONG. How tf did I never notice this before it’s my new alhtred anthem now AHHHH
@wxxds5 ай бұрын
GOD YES!! but i do think that uhtred's refusal at the end of s5 had sooo much to do with what alfred would have wanted, in 3x09 alfred did sort of say to him that he wanted good men to have power and edward proved to be the opposite of that and in a way uhtred also waited to see if aethelstan was too or not + as you said, indeed by binding his time he did help alfred's cause because he was able to unite northumbria under one king for the first time in the whole show, and alfred himself said that that kingdom would have been THE problem for the unification of england so YEAHHHH LMAOOOOO THAT'S SO ME, TRULY ALHTRED ANTHEM

Aeflaed has such underrated complexity. In S4, she is a vain, self-centred woman who behaves like a brat and has no idea how to wield power, then becomes an accomplice to attempted murder of Aelswith. By S5, she has lost her husband’s respect, as well as his love, and now suffers publicly from his affairs. She has no power or autonomy, it’s all ever her husband or father. Aalys, however, gives her kindness and purpose and for a short while she has a friend, who gives her the strength to die courageously.
@wxxds8 ай бұрын
I think that Aelflaed found in Aalys someone who genuinely loved her for the first time ever. As you said she's such an underrated complex character that gets no respect from the two main male figures of her life: Edward and Aethelhelm. I don't remember S4 that well, but I'm pretty sure that even in that one Edward already belittled her with all his dismissal of the son they had together, in S5 he worsens his behaviour towards her through shaming her directly by blantantly flirting with other women in front of everyone. She deserved better and I'm glad that for a little while she was able to find her freedom with Aalys!
@louisefarrar60378 ай бұрын
@@wxxdsproblem with Aeflaed is she was never suited to being Queen. Edward I think found her charming and soothing for a while, but when he was just starting his relationship with her he was still smarting from the loss of a woman he loved very much and his two children he never thought he would see again. Aeflaed was not a strong character, she was raised by her father to be an ornamental puppet. So that’s where Edward probably also lost interest, as well as a general lack of respect for women (he is always very quick to undermine Aelswith and Aetheflaed without much consideration, as much as he loves them). She never really had a chance, bless her.
@wxxds8 ай бұрын
@@louisefarrar6037 Oh I don't believe that Edward has ever actually loved her, because, indeed, he was in love with another and that's fair really, but in general, as you said, he never actually respects women (look at the way he also raised his voice at Aelswith, so his own mother, in S4), so I doubt that Aelflaed's personality and how she was brought about had anything to do with the reason why Edward didn't love her, and I think that the treatment towards her and any other female character just automatically removes any possible justification of him doing it because he wasn't able to marry who he wanted to marry. Many people on the show had to do the same and yet most of them never truly treated badly their spouse, they cheated, yes, but never mistreated in such a way. More than Aelflaed being the "problem", I think it was actually Edward the main problem of the situation, but unfortunately it is always easy to blame the woman rather than the man... Bless her for real!
@louisefarrar60378 ай бұрын
@@wxxds especially since Edward is King. Kind of hard to be the one in the wrong in the marriage when one of them is a ruling monarch. Edward is a terrible husband and also a very poor King for much of the series (for all he has a promising start in S3). What makes Aelflaed’s situation even worse though is defo Aethelhelm. He is poisonous and manipulative and Edward’s goodwill for Aeflaed only really lasts as he respects her father. When Aethelhelm loses Edward’s respect, he has no incentive to care for his wife anymore. Plus Aethelhelm never tries to make Edward care for his daughter more - he just tells Aeflaed she needs to do ‘her duty’ and sneakily pays off the mistresses, which incentivises Edward to continue treating his wife poorly.

Those damn blue eye Danes that come to tempt Saxon’s kings. While watching the movie I did see a lot of similarities between Alfred/Uhtred and Athelstan/Ingilmundr. Born a Saxon but raised a Dane. Born a Dane but raised a Saxon. Uhtred made Alfred see light While Ingilmundr made Athelstan be consume by darkness.
@wxxds8 ай бұрын
exactly!! i do think that alfred did think that uhtred sort of "blinded him", also because he did say that in 2×06 when he claimed that uhtred clouded everything he believed "to be right and wrong", and also again in 3×09 when he basically admitted that he wasn't able to think in a rational way when it came to uhtred, but despite all of this i think that what indeed made the whole dynamic different from aethelstan/ingilmundr was that, first of all, uhtred had "good intentions", and lastly, just like anything else in his life, alfred never allowed himself to be happy and thus always tried to keep uhtred at arm's length. in a way they are just as much tragic, if not more, because they make you wonder "what if alfred allowed himself? what then?"
@paulabarra54318 ай бұрын
@@wxxdsyes. Athelstan just allow himself to be consume by this man. As I watch SKMD I went back and I watched season 5 again to see Athelstan’s change. However, I could still see the boy in S5 in him specially around Uhtred even with Ingilmundr there. However, even before they kissed it was obvious that Athelstan was just desperate for Ingilmundr’s validation. Uhtred saw this. That when Athelstan eyes were on Uhtred he completely agree with his father yet when he turn to Ingilmundr everything else clouded in his head and you could see that puppy dog eyes. You can see it when they first met Uhtred. It was the religious guilt but I think Athelstan was allow to express himself better than Alfred and I do think that if Alfred had allow those feelings in they would have let him to give complete control to Uhtred over his heart and power. Athelstan was young and Ingilmundr provide him with an ear, arms and later sex. Ingilmundr drove the car 100% as Alfred never truly allow Uhtred that. You could see him fighting really hard. Even when he kill Ingilmundr. After seeing what he did to his men, after all the men he lost in the battle field, even after facing him in the field he spare him for moment and the death scene was beautiful because he still wanted some validation from Ingilmundr. He wanted to see if it was all him feeling this love. “I choose you over my people” And is true Athelstan put Ingilmundr before everything he care and believe. I really thought this could have been a 5-6 episode season instead of movie. Because at end Ingilmundr could have just said loudly the nature of Athelstan and his relationship. That would have been spread and Athelstan could have kill for being homosexual. However he decided to use the word “fond” instead. That could easily be dismissed as friendship or care. Because we see Uhtred using the same word when he went back and told everyone that Athelstan had change because of an “influence” But great job with the video.
@wxxds8 ай бұрын
exactly about uhtred noticing immediately that there was something going on between aethelstan and ingilmundr, there's just this moment when he looks at the both of them in the scene where aethelstan introduces him to uhtred that just shows how much he understood quite quickly, and he also says it when he goes back to his home that aethelstan is influenced. indeed compared to alfred, aethelstan allowed himself to be manipulated way more by him and i think it has a lot to do with the fact that aethelstan didn't truly admit during their relationship that ingilmundr clouded his judgement, while alfred did admit it with uhtred, so in him there was a kind of awareness that lacked in his grandson, which makes it interesting really! in a complete season we could have certainly been able to see way better the whole dynamic between aethelstan and ingilmundr, but i do understand why they chose to make a film, it would have been nice tho!! thank you for the feedback and the compliment on the video, much appreciated!
