Great video. Can you fit a 13" laptop and a camera (similar to the one in this video) together in the Classic Messenger XS? Thanks.

Hey. No a 13” won’t fit. Definitely not in the sleeve. If u tried the main pocket u could probably make it fit length wise but u wouldn’t be able to close the flap. And definitely no room for a camera

Thanks for your notes. From your experience, is such a backpack really more convenient than a regular backpack? I mean, I often take my camera out of my regular backpack and put it back, and so on. I wonder if taking it out from that dedicated opening is really and definitely more convenient, faster, etc. Or maybe it actually adds more clutter. Thanks!

Thanks for watching. I think since primarily switching to “just the camera” no accessories or lenses etc. You’re right I don’t actually use camera backpacks anymore. I use a beanie to stuff the camera in. Other than having accessories, the only other reason for a camera backpack is if you intend to stuff other things into the bag, which makes it inconvenient to retrieve camera or maybe even damage it. Additionally with the way I’m doing it now , tho this could be Fuji xt2 specific, I find that my PN switch toggles and maybe 1 in 5 times I already have my camera run down in battery as it’s been on the whole time in my bag. YMMV

Hi I’m not quite sure. My iPad Air 4th Gen is 10.9” (9.74” LX 7” W) and width wise (7” side)it’s already flush with the pocket and lengthwise (9.7” side) I could see it have about 1” more room but that would be maxing it out.

thank you for the comparison! So question, have you travelled with the messenger bag yet? I am going to Japan in a couple of months and I know I need to bring more things like an umbrella and stuff and I also need to walk more than where I currently live. Have you found any issues with the messenger bag if you ever traveled to places that require you to walk more than usual? Does it tend to weigh down a lot or do you wish there were additional padding?
@jameskli
@jameskli Жыл бұрын
Hi Ellie. Yes I have travelled a bit with this bag. It’s what I tend to bring *if* I didn’t bring a day backpack. In my experience no matter how light messenger bags are, you always feel the weight because of the one-sided support. I’d say even with this timbuk2 XS I think you do feel it after several hours. That being said since it’s already quite light maybe it’s at least the best you can do as far as messenger bags go. Personally For long outings especially vacation day trips I do favor wearing a backpack to have both shoulders and your back to bear the weight. Especially as you say, you’re gonna bring an umbrella , perhaps water bottle, spare sweater/jacket , and then maybe some unplanned purchases like snack or souvenirs in addition to what you normally bring. Not even just from a weight support perspective but from the larger space, I’d recommend a backpack.

Hi JKL! Great video, was very helpful a month ago when i was looking for a new backpack for my 77d and M5+ lenses. I chose the medium street backpack, giving good room for the two cameras and their lenses. I felt the street slim having the cameras at the top of the bag would make the bag top heavy when carrying around. Plus i would always be worried about the slim tipping forward when i go to remove a camera or lens. This was the main reason i chose the medium, plus actually size wise the slim is quite a bit smaller inside. I have to say i am very very happy with the medium street bp. It carries all my camera kit and sundries in those useful extra pockets, plus having a generous non rigid top space for glasses cases, money purse, mobile phone, and even a change of clothes, its bogger than it looks, which is perfect. I also think the medium sits well on my back as you point out in your video. Thank you for doing this comparison, you help a lot of people out. 🙏

Yea I do think there is kind of like a user height to backpack height ratio limit. Like I think those fjallraven type square backpacks sit weirdly on me for the same reason. Nice review. I have some questions if you don’t mind. Is the hard case section at the top removable so it becomes floppy at the top? Are the zips lockable? Nice to lock up on the overhead locker in a plane. Is it still a good size as a day pack for the day in the city or for hiking?
@hijkl
@hijkl 2 жыл бұрын
Hello thanks for dropping by. To answer your questions, the case at the top is only hard on the outside and that shell is not removable. The rest of the pocket (inside-facing) is all soft. There are some Thule models where there’s a removable hard tray inside but not this model (but in none of these have the out-facing shell removable anyway). I do prefer it this way, but one thing to watch out for is if you overfill your backpack then you run the risk of crushing the sunglasses from the inside. The bag is designed such that when fully empty it still retains its shape and so the hard top doesn’t look caved in at all from the weight of it. Regarding the zippers, they are regular zippers without any luggage style dedicated lock loops, but there are standard holes on the handles that you can put a small lock on. I like using nite ize s-biners. S-biners don’t really lock a dedicated thief out but it prevents discrete walk-by pilfering since you sort of need two hands to undo the s-biner. Note that only the main compartment has two zippers (to connect with a lock), the top pocket and front pocket are only single zippers. I do think it's a good size for day/city hiking, and it's what I use it for. I think it's largely dependent on your needs, but I think 18L is good for me. I would say the only reason I dont bring it in vacation travel, is because I choose a slightly bigger backpack as a carry-on because I would rather have all my electronics carried on with me on flights, and on day hikes, end up walking around with a slightly too big and empty backpack.

@@hijkl Thank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough feedback. For the last few years, I have been using a brand called Pacsafe. They are supposed to be anti theft bags. Some of their bags are very secure and some are less so. However they do still have some clever design features such as being able to lock them up or be able to lock a shoulder strap of a bag to a table or chair while you are sitting in a cafe. This makes it difficult to slyly steal your bag in a busy cafe. Also some of the bags have a mesh lining to prevent thieves trying to slash open the bag with a sharp knife or razor blade. Unfortunately where I am staying in Indonesia now, particularly in Bali where I am now there is not so much anymore of Pacsafe products. Therefore I will get a more easily available Thule bag. As carry on travel, I usually take a 40l Pacsafe vibe bag plus an additional smaller carry on 15l bag for laptop, iPad, sweater etc. My 15l bag is becoming a bit worn out so I plan to replace it. I saw the Thule Enroute 14l bag but looks a touch too small. I thought the next size up 18l can take my additional carry on needs and yet still make a day trip bag for my travel needs for raincoat, water bottle etc without being overly big and useless. Thank you once again for your great feedback!
@hijkl
@hijkl 2 жыл бұрын
Great, I think it’ll be a great bad to choose. Yea I’ve heard good things about the pacsafe but for some reason I never bit the bullet to buy one. I think it was because at it’s more elevated price it was going into dedicated camera bag price territory which was the original intention of my bag hunting so I started overlooking it. But their tech seem pretty useful indeed!

@@widarta7 hi. I’m not 100” sure. There is a bit more room in the sleeve when my iPad 10.9” is inserted but not sure if it is large enough for a 12” iPad. I think with photo bags sizing becomes an issue as most are advertised as and many choose the bag based on how much gear it will hold. If choosing a backpack for hiking a good outdoor shop will fit the bag to your body as well as to how much gear you want to carry. Smaller, shorter people in smaller, shorter packs, larger, taller people with larger, longer bags so the features of the bag fall onto the correct parts of the body. Straps spaced for narrower or wider frames, the bottom of the bag sitting in the small of the back rather than halfway up. I only "need" a 10L Tenba but know a 14L will fit me better
@hijkl
@hijkl 2 жыл бұрын
Very well put Anthony, I totally agree. In Canada we do have an outdoors store called MEC with reps who do advise based on fit and purpose, and additionally they have pretty generous return policies. It is true though that not more emphasis is placed on wearer’s size but that is definitely a factor. As the conclusion to this video indicates and experience with other bags Eg those fjallraven types there does seem to be a volume threshold where the fit doesn’t work (similarly for me it is about 10-12L too). I’m still hopeful however for a bag design that can do 10-12L backpacks for taller builds because a 10-12L messenger is just as bad ! :) thanks for dropping a comment
