Your video helped me realise that I needed to calm down and wait a while before I could enter the EKA code, which saved the day. BTW, it actually takes 30 minutes. I've owned P38s for years and now that I own a few I disconnect the battery if I'm not driving one regularly. Once powered up again, I then enter the EKA using a Nanocom (especially handy if you have a faulty door lock), but somehow I've never been 'locked out' in this manner before. Not knowingly at least. Only seen the "Engine Disabled" notice. The Nanocom simply doesn't communicate with the BECM during "key code lockout", which can cause panic (in the unsuspecting owner) and very confusing feedback; All the factory settings appear to have been wiped - I genuinely thought the BECM was toast! Perhaps I've always faffed for at least 30 minutes after reattaching a battery, and never noticed the lockout notice. Very likely, but this time I was in a hurry. Regardless, your 4 year old video gave me pause and hope. And eventually the code worked. Joy! The BECM was fine, just not ready to talk to the Nanocom yet. Noted for future reference. Aaaaaand breathe! Thank you. We're never too old or jaded to learn something new about P38s.

@HF_AscotShed glad it helped all these years later. I should probably do a more up to date and abit more clear version. There is always something new to learn on the p38. I wondered if they got stolen much when they were new because I can't even steal my own some days 🤣🤣

Hi James, just watched your video. Well done and thank you. Can I ask roughly how many hours it took you to pull the engine out? Justcabout to take mine out for an exhaust manifold gasket leak, might as well do the chains while it's out

Hi thanks for watching. Hopefully it can be some help along the way. The engine out part wasn't actually to bad. Abit more difficult doing it on the floor. But probably 3-4 hours to get it all out. Everything is very heavy so keep that in mind 🤣. Something to note there are 2 ecu's for me the one on the passenger side had a security tabe over the connector that I had to cut out the way. Other than that it was all straight forward. Yeah definitely worth doing the chains. I might need to drop mine out again soon as one of the turbos is abit smokey. Good luck to you buddy. Shoot me a message if you think I could help in anyway 👍 cheers

@@jamescollett3746 also I have a question that maybe you know the answer. I have seen a few 4.2 v8 tdi listed for sale, some write 540 torque others 800?? And not only 1 🤔 I know there is the v12 pushing 1000 torque but I haven't found any on a reasonable price. So my question is are there different 4.2 v8 tdi's or this is a modification that some people do?

So as far as I'm aware all the 4.2 v8 tdi are the same. I have seen alot that have had a re,map for extra power. Also if your just doing a chain replacement then its not to bad of a job once you have engine out. For me most of the work was swaping everything on to the next block. It is a beast of a car though. Hi James, out of curiosity, how did you time your camshafts when you put them back in? had you marked them before your removed them? I made a cradle to hold the camshafts to the carrier when I removed them off the head. As long as I kept the gears meshed together I "should" have been able to just bolt the carrier and camshafts back on.. Somehow I have lost my timing.. I fear it may be a trip to the dealership with camshafts and carrier in hand to get them to line it up in their jig and put some reference marks on the gears so I can line these back up when I reinstall.
@jamescollett3746
@jamescollett3746 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. The timing marks for the cam shafts are on the opposite end to the gears. The slots should align with eachother. So that you can put a peace of flat metal across the face of the head and into the slot on the cam shafts if you know what I mean? I just did mine by eye because if your are one tooth out you can see it clearly. Let me know if your still struggling and I will try take some photos of the other engine I have in bits. Cheersfor watching 👍🏻

Awesome video mate. Thanks so much for putting the time into making it. Very beneficial. With 315,000 kms on the clock, mine has noisy lifters, oil leak from the rear, and noisy chains. This video really helped me understand how theyre put together. Like you im a bit of a "backyard mechanic", so these videos are super helpful. I think i might try to take the engine out from the top though. From what you saw, how difficult do you think it would be to get out from a wiring / gearbox point of view? Also - did you use a workshop manual or something similar?. I assume youd need to understand torque settings etc. If so - would you mind poitning me in the direction of where to get it? Cheers.

Forgot to say wiring wise. Best to leave engine loom on until you have it out of the car. There are 2 ecu's ither side of the scuttle panel. Take wipers off and panel. You have to cut the security plate off the one ecu to get connector off or try and remover shear bolts if you can. Cheers

Thanks. Yeah its still running perfectly. I forgot to say in the video that the reason it broke in the first place was because who ever previously replaced the cam chains put the Idler sprocket on the wrong way round. So it prematurely wore the new chains out. Very nice car to drive. And a nice amount of power 👍🏻 Hope this helps your decision. Cheers
