I can’t see Maro moving anytime soon. He is relishing the captaincy at Saracens, he has his marquee player salary, he is settled and playing well for his club and for his country . Outside rugby he has his various commercial and charitable activities and lastly I understand he has recently just got married. I don’t know him personally but if at some point in time he decides to to move from Saracens after 2027 , then with a heavy heart I would wish him well in whatever he decides to do

Another thought - in the absence of a minor league importing rugby players to the NFL only makes sense if you're going to... rip up convention and have plays where you let them play rugby..... Maybe at some critical point in the game when you judge your opponent to be tired and beaten up you put them on to use their workrate, run support lines, throw laterals.... The only sense i can make of it...

Gonna be honest and im a rugby fan, rees zammit might make it if he accepts 2 or 3 seasons not playing on the practice squad but what professional athlete wants to do that? These guys want to play. The route for rugby players would be to try walking onto a college football team aged 20, but why would they want to do that when they can be paid to play a sport they know with far more guarantees? There are undoutbtedly rugby players like Rees Zammit who fit the NFL athletic template but the only way i could ever see significant crossover would be if the NFL instigated a minor league that acted as a development league and paid at least as well as rugby.... but why would they do that when they can cherrypick 1000 elite college players every single season? Bottom line is that the NFL isn't geared up for and nor does it need to be geared up for development players. Just go and find the next big thing coming out of college, and in the unlikely event you don't find him this season you'll probably find him next....

Nah no brain drain IMO. Physical attributes is one thing but you can’t make up for lack of experience, at least in the skilled positions. Mailata has shown that it is possible for big men to make the transition but he could be an anomaly. Lawrence Okoye was a tremendous athlete with freakish physical attributes but couldn’t make it as a defensive lineman. But back to skilled positions, the list of failed transition projects is long.

I doubt there’d be a large-scale exodus of rugby stars to the NFL’s IPP system. There are a handful of players with profiles that could make them attractive to NFL personnel folks, but as LRZ shows, the path is not a simple one for guys who basically need to learn how to train for a totally new sport….And like the Hamilton interview showed, most players would take months to absorb and master an NFL playbook for a skill position. I think Rees-Zammit has NFL-potential tools (size, pace, intelligence), and wide receiver does appear to be a better fit for him than running back. But top US colleges are churning out elite wide receiver prospects at a rapid pace. Look at Ohio State, which has sent four first-round WR picks to the league in the past three seasons (Wilson, Olave, Smith-Njigba, Harrison) and have three currently (Egbuka, Smith, Tate) who will eventually also be picked that high….and that’s just one school. So the competition at the one skill position I think you’d find more potential Rees-Zammits Kurt-Lee Arendse?) Besides kickers, there are few other positions where top rugby players are likely to be NFL candidates (I would have loved to have seen Ma’a Nonu in a Chicago Bears uniform, but not many others….the skills are different, and the learning curve for players not exposed to the other game is so steep.)

Agreed. It’s not like there aren’t rugby players with the physical ability and intelligence to be an NFL player, it’s just the learning of an entire new game at a pro level is just really really hard. Most teams can just pickup someone from college or a free agent who knows the game already. Just that Louis was on wales cause they just aren’t doing well.

The pitches I played on... back in the mid 70s we had a road trip. 300 miles to Jacksonville. We packed a bunch of us into a VW minivan and headed out. We get there. It's the 'athletic field/playground' of a primary school. Seen worse. There had been one of those quick Florida downpours as we arrived. Nothing terrible. About 1/4" of standing water in the pitch. In that heat with the sun it looked like Paradise. It wasn't. I'm going to provide some information about the pitch that we, the visitors did not know. I don't believe that all of the host were even aware the series of unfortunate decisions that had happened earlier in the day. The following is what I surmise happened due to my experience in the grounds industry and the duties of a club's equipment manager. 1 Someone got to the pitch early. Probably to line the pitch. Upon arrival they discovered that there were multiple fire ant nests within the proposed playing area. 2 It was decided that, since it was handy, they would pour gasoline on the infestations to drive the angry inhabitants down into the ground which it did. 3 It rained. At first, a few rucks, mauls and scrums in, one or two guys are pulling at their jerseys or shorts. Then a few more start exhibiting discomfort. The gasoline had floated up and your skin would burn. We didn't really know what it was. We were confused. 4 Then came the ants..... Worst pitch I have ever played on. We still had fun
