1:32 Their visual system is adapted to detect movement. A small shake of the lioness's head was enough for the male to quickly locate her. Regardless of the fact that she was almost out of his field of vision.

Yeah, that makes sense given the lion immediately notices the lioness when she shakes her head. Handy trait to have as a predator.

@aristotels_aristotals I really wouldn't want to take this chance, but I'm willing to bet that if I'm being chased by a lion and somehow I was able to turn the tables and start running towards the lion, I bet the loin gets scared, confused and runs away.
@aristotels_aristotals5 күн бұрын
@@KBLIZZ333 It could be. They have never seen humans walking or running towards them. But they might not. In July 2018, in South Africa, three rhino poachers were eaten by a pride of lions.
@KBLIZZ3334 күн бұрын
@aristotels_aristotals Ouch. Yeah, I don't remember the details exactly, but I once saw a video many years ago of a lunatic guy messing with wild lions. Laying on the ground near them. When the lions got curious and started approaching him, the man stood up with a roll of toilet tissue in his raised hand, and the lion got freaked out and started to run away. I know lions are usually super confident in their environment. But an aggressive charge from a human might be enough to save a mans life. But I certainly won't be the one testing that theory and possibly winning myself a Darwin Award.

Now I'm going to have to research what a kudu is.
@spsheridanАй бұрын
Kudu are one of the largest antelope species with the bulls weighing between 420 and 600 lbs and standing up to 63 inches at the shoulder. They are brown in color and have several thin white vertical stripes on their bodies. They are characterized by their long curvy horns. Our guide pointed out they don’t have antlers that are shed every year. Instead, their horns stay with them for life.
@fantasticvoyage262Ай бұрын
@spsheridan I presume they can inflict serious damage with their horns?
@spsheridanАй бұрын
@@fantasticvoyage262 Yes they can. I think this kudu was a smaller one, not a full-grown bull. This group of lions would definitely have the advantage over a single, non-adult kudu.

What "shadow bands"?
@spsheridan7 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I can explain it much better than the description under the video, but that is often cut off and needs to be expanded to read the whole description. So I'll expand on it here: Shadow Bands appear as alternating light and dark squiggly bands (like irregular ripples on water) that can be seen undulating in parallel on the ground. The effect is subtle so they are often hard to make out. They won't appear when viewed on most mobile phone displays. The bands are caused by the narrow slit of light from the solar crescent immediately before and after totality being refracted by turbulent air in the atmosphere. Varying degrees of sunlight refraction cause varying degrees of dark and light on the ground.

@@joelyons9808 They are very subtle and difficult to see - more like irregular ripples on water than distinct bands. I see them best when I select 1080 res on the video and view it on a large display. I can barely make them out on my 14" MacBook Pro and I can't see them on my iPhone display.

Steve -- I'm surprised the gondola operators didn't get on your case when you stuck the selfie stick out the window! Of course, they probably didn't see it. Great idea for a 360 video!
@spsheridan Жыл бұрын
Yeah, there's a story behind that. I was concerned about the same thing until at the top of the mountain, I spoke with a guide who works for Mammoth Resorts and also has an Insta360 X3 camera. He suggested that I stick the X3 on my selfie stick out of the gondola to get a view like the one you see. I asked about potential interference with mechanisms above the gondola and he said the gondola cable is farther than you can reach with a selfie stick (unless you had a 10-footer). Still, I was concerned so I pulled in the stick as we approached the drop-off point inside the station.

Thanks, David. My previous 360 camera (Rico Theta V) was not up to this task since it wasn't waterproof or even water-resistant. The Insta360 X3 does well in water conditions and even under water.

If it was the moon in front of the sun, why didn't we see the full moon after the sun went down , i wonder?
@spsheridan2 жыл бұрын
With the moon between the Earth and the sun, the illuminated (full) side of the moon is facing away from Earth. The dark side of the moon is facing toward us and it’s too dim to see. Also, since the total eclipse occurred fairly close in time to sunset, the sun was still partially eclipsed as it set below the horizon. At the end of the video, you can see that when the sun went below the horizon, so did the moon with it.
@tiredironrepair2 жыл бұрын
Were you able to see the darker surface features on the moon?
@spsheridan2 жыл бұрын
No, I didn't see any features on the moon as it eclipsed the sun. I think glare from the sun's corona swamped out our view of the moon's dark side.

A point of clarification: the model uses a Mylar sheet to simulate the sunshield while the actual JWST sunshield is made from five layers of aluminum-coated Kapton, a stronger material that can handle a much higher temperature range.

For those wondering about the November 2021 date on my JWST t-shirt, I bought it several months before JWST's originally planned Nov '21 launch date. JWST actually launched on December 25, 2021 so I now proudly wear an out-of-date JWST shirt.
