This video sparked my desire to try bike touring... my wife and I jumped in deep and rode from Pittsburgh to DC on our very first bike tour. It was such a challenging yet reward experience, that we've returned a couple more times since 2018, and we're looking forward to more bike touring. Stumbled upon this video again after years... now I can better appreciate the muddy autumn struggle.

why bring a helmet and not wear it? One fall and it could be head injury and life is done. Protect your egg wear your helmet..

It will be 0°F this weekend in Indiana. I really look forward to spring and biking another rail trail somewhere! The GAP and the C&O were both great last year!

Anyone contemplating this trip as a cyclotourist would do them selves a favor by having both front and rear panniers for gear. The bikes ride more nicely and things are never buried as deep.

Do you think that a 100-mile (or more) bike tour is feasible for someone who's never done a multi-day ride? I'd love to bike about 100 miles of the trail (50 miles there and back, starting in Rockwood, PA and going to Cumberland, MD and then turning back to where I'm going to be parked in Rockwood PA), but I'm just worried that I might not be strong enough. I've biked 40 miles in a day once before, and so considering that I'll be camping and resting throughout the trip and I'm young (21) and mostly fit, I'd think I can do it, but it'd be good to hear from the experts.

I did the GAP trail in late August 2021. Pittsburgh to Cumberland. I camped at Round Bottom campground the first night which is about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. Had a shelter all to myself and didn't need my tent. There is a well pump there at RB but the water was terrible. I could have gotten water from the river but I didn't have my Sawyer filter with me. It was a great ride you couldn't ask for better trail conditions. I stayed at Yoder's Guesthouse B&B in Meyersdale, PA which I highly recommend! It is slightly uphill from Pittsburgh all the way to the Continental Divide. There is plenty of water available but one day I somehow missed my water supply point and ran out. It was very hot out and I had no choice but to get unfiltered water out of the Casselman River. It didn't kill me. I would do this trail again in a heartbeat.

Thanks for your commentary along your trip....I'm quite familiar with the overall conditions especially once you reached Frostburg( Hometown)...and yes your statement regarding the trail conditions was spot on... lol.... Your sleeping preference would of been my choice as well for I have done the hammock thing many times and brrrrr cover's it ...... Thanks again!!

My husband and I have done the GAP between Cumberland Pittsburgh. We did it several years ago, and then again last year. We used Amtrak to get from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Amtrak has roll-on/roll-off bike service along the Capitol Limited. However we stayed at bike friendly hotels along the route. Also @ 18:50 I found that ringing a bike bell never works. A loud "call-to-pass" ("ON YOUR LEFT!") works much better!

I found the western half more scenic. Folks are great along the trail, but get off a few miles and a few will simply assume you are from another planet ... I exaggerate some, but in so many ways it's true. The W&LE bridge at 4:00 is cool.

Most Awesome!!! That is really cool that there are trail shelters along the way. I would not have though that on a bike route.

7:00 bro i know you didn't sleep at all there. I uploaded a vid a couple months ago about this ride and although that campsite is one of the nicest for that price, that dang train reverberates over the river making it twice as loud. I slept maybe 4 hours that night.

Good video and documentation of your ride. Brought back memories of the same trip I did 3 years ago now. I was lucky for my trip, it rained solid for the week before I was there but nice during my ride. My first day I was rolling along on a nice clean bike and came upon dudes with total mud covered bikes and panniers and bodies!!
