“i was watching this short animated film. the child and the dad had a very close bond with each other and loved the time they spent together. fast forward some years later, the dad was no longer in the picture, and the child, now grown up, is reminded of his dad after an encounter with another parent and their child walking alongside the rainy sidewalk. this whole film got me thinking about my own parents and my relationship with them. i realize that, while yes, i do love them dearly, i never had that type of bond with them. it was always me and my sister, which even we don’t talk anymore. i’ve never felt like i was close with either of my parents. my mom is a more antisocial person who tends to say things without thinking, and my dad, while he is a bit better now, has always struggled with anger issues. in fact, that anger sort of runs in the family. not to mention his struggles with alcoholism when i was younger and all the crazy and unfortunate things i had to go through at such an age. it’s no wonder i struggle with specific mental health issues and disorders. i wasn’t expecting to get into all that, but, i guess the scars were already there, and this bittersweet film i watched just so opened to reopen the wound. i never had that kind of relationship with my parents and, as sad as it is to say, i never will.”
