Advertising Week Interview: David Droga on Bravery “Do you want to interview David Droga?” That was the question posed by the awesome Lucy Truglio of the Advertising Club of New York as we were talking about the International ANDY Awards and what we were planning for their presence in London at Advertising Week Europe. “Of course I want to interview David Droga,” was the response. Like many people in this industry, I just knew about David. I had heard him speak. I’ve read things he’s written. As a general rule, I’m very much interested in the people who choose to even get into this business. I’m even more interested in building something more personal - and personalized - in the conversations that I’m lucky enough to have. I also know that there always will be some kind of common thread that can stitch together conversations that are (hopefully) interesting. Richard Branson and I had admiration for Natalie Imbruglia in common. I “grew up” on Ludacris when I was in the hip hop game (yes, it’s true - I was in hip hop). Somehow, my hometown of Portland, Oregon resonated with Edward Burns. I even was able to get a smile out of Oliver Stone when I suggested that he should probably be doing more voice work, a craft that I’ve been involved with for over 18 years. These were interviews, over the years at Advertising Week, that I valued and they worked because of those common threads. But I wasn’t entirely sure what the common ground would be with David Droga. I’ve long admired his work, but there really wasn’t much of anything that stood out to me as something that would be an emotional “hitching post,” other than the fact that I have been interacting with a raft of amazing Aussies recently. I quickly realized that we are both students of this industry - it’s rich history, it’s magnanimous leaders, it’s character (and characters). Additionally, the theme of bravery, which is the foundation for the ANDY Awards this year, was a great thing to weave in throughout the conversation. I had always heard about the confidence. I was aware of the commitment. I expected candor. What I also found, in David Droga, is someone who cares very deeply about this business and the people who drive its success every day. There was also great humility from a true leader who appreciates what this industry has, and can accomplish. From brave acts in and outside of the business, to the bravest work and the notion of nurturing bravery, we hope that you enjoy this 30 minutes with David Droga. I know I did.

As a peak performance psychologist I would like to comment how refreshing it is to see a CEO asking questions AND listening - what lessons did Sir Martin take back into WPP?
