"The old year now hath passed away; We thank Thee, O our God, today That Thou hast kept us through the year When danger and distress were near." Although you play it well, this piece has never done anything for me. I find it gloomy and dreary. It exemplifies the division between Bach's secular and liturgical compositions. Its essential purpose is devotional and reflective. Bach wrote it as an expression of his faith. For those who are steeped in the faith that he was the piece will have meaning. Otherwise better to listen to the free compositions, of which fortunately there are many.

That's the difficult thing about playing Bach: it requires his faith understanding.

I would say this is the best performance of BWV645 we're likely to hear this year. A fine solo stop and a highly musical interpretation. The keyboard part from the actual cantata, with its figured bass, offers a fuller and I think more satisfactory sound, but maybe this version suggests the restraint of the strict and solemn preparation for Advent. With all due respect to Bach, I prefer Flor Peeters' similar setting of this prelude-as long as it's played fast enough!

I have never played this chorale by F.Peeters. It is a lovely piece☺️

I have never heard of Johann Heinrich Buttstett, and now I find on KZbin that he too has written a chorale prelude on Nun Komm. It's very nice..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX6cYZd6lsiFp68si=bprGEhJ_4KrkESiw There must be other composers called 'Johann' that have written versions of Nun Komm. Something to look into!

@@masayo.katsuyama.organcafe I wasn't aware of it either. But he has written a huge amount of chorale preludes and I thought Nun Komm must be surely be included! I look forward to hearing it.

What might be the symbolism conveyed in the repeated chords in the left hand? I wonder what Bach had in mind.

Symbols of the ticking of time, the progress of life and the beating of the heart・・・
@ZL54JK8Ай бұрын
@@masayo.katsuyama.organcafe It seems to me to be an odd chorale prelude because of that unremitting left hand. Bach must have had something in mind, and we can only guess what it might have been. Thinking hard about it, I propose that the words, "Against Thee only have I sinned; It weighs upon me constantly," are central to the piece. There is the idea, I think, of the steady, unrelenting weight of sin and shortcoming, portrayed in the left hand, while the right hand solo conveys the remedy as contained in the lines, "Oh, sprinkle me with hyssop, Lord; Pure I’ll be if Thou washest me, Whiter than snow." I do like the tempo you have chosen. Played any faster, the piece becomes trite and superficial.

Why are there no comments? Why is this very jolly little fugue not played much? I haven't heard it for many years and it's a treat to hear it played so well here on this fine organ for which it is so well suited. There is the famous story of the young Bach being brought to the very old and blind Reincken and Bach improvised for him what we now have as BWV 542. Reincken was greatly impressed. "I thought," he said, "that the art of improvisation was dead, but I find it lives on in you."
