Interesting, thank you. A good technique to employ for hedgerow management is “Pleaching” this is a traditional technique that thickens up the hedge, making it secure for livestock, great for improving habit for wildlife from predators, saves on fencing repairs/management, provides windbreaks/shelters, protects the land from losing top soil & helps protect from flooding. Good for privacy & better security!

Hay nets are way too high. They are not goats and besides the occasional tree leaves or even bark, they will graze low.
@naturallywilor
@naturallywilor 2 ай бұрын
I have my hay nets at all different levels so that the herd use different back muscles, and other supportive muscle groups, whilst eating. Throughout their day they graze the small amount of grass on their track, forage from hedges at various heights and, yes, browse low hanging branches and bark. The difference in them since we have given them the variety in eating heights has been very informative. The beauty of being a horse guardian is that our horses give us constant feedback and we enjoy being guided by them.

Words matter ! All animals are sentient beings, they are individuals, they are someone. Animals are here with us they are not for us. Any animal you care for is certainly part of your family, you are their guardian, they totally depend on you for their survival. Eating animals,their eggs or their milk, wearing their skins, breeding and raising animals to consume or use to exploit as a commodity is unacceptable and the biggest betrayal of all !

I'm setting up a track system for my miniature horses, for three purposes: to give them an 8ft wide race track which will allow them to race and gallop to their hearts' content, to hopefully allow for some rotational strip grazing, and, as part of a many pronged coyote deterrent system. The minis will only be allowed into the track under supervision. Their track contains two trees. I love your idea of placing logs on the track!

I bought an 'older' pony 2 months ago. I am a 'mature(older)' lady myself. Ridden since a child, kept ponies most of my life. ( Tried giving up horses numerous times!!). Shes's the most polite, gentle, appreciative soul ( yes Cheeky, as you say, if she thinks she can get away with something!). But understands when I make a mistake and spend ages struggling redoing straps up( because my arthritic fingers don't function like they're supposed to!). No ears back, fidgeting, pushing, she waits for me to sort myself out. And yes, I let her choose her path sometimes on a hack in the woods. She seems to appreciate there is no need to rush anymore and enjoys the moments of just 'being'. As for expensive, I have had quite a few younger horses that were for more problematic. I'm monitoring her stomach as she has some teeth issues which was why I stumbled across ( and watched) your herbs and horses videos. ( We have already discovered Sticky weed!). Thank you for your videos. I think they are Great!! Very much appreciated!

I've got some comefrey from country park herbs ( it's came as chopped up and dry)they recommend feeding it. However I'd like to put it on the leg as a poltice how would u recommend I do this ?
@naturallywilor
@naturallywilor Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reaching out. Apologies for the late response. It can be more difficult to create a poultice using dried herbs as you'd need to add the moisture back into the plant so that the beneficial nutrients you are after can come out of the plant and into the leg. If you can't get a hold of fresh comfrey then I would suggest soaking the dried comfrey in a small amount of water (not boiling hot) overnight then create your poultice in the morning. I hope this help :)

Dehydrated some after 3 months they became moldy, are they still safe to use
@naturallywilor
@naturallywilor Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching the video. I would not recommend using mouldy nettles. might be worth checking what caused them to become mouldy, was it something to do with the container used? were they fully dried before they were stored? was there an issue with the nettles themselves before they were dried and stored? I hope you have better luck this year ☺️

Thanks for using fish. I do leave my small feeder goldfish in the horse tank for years. Also use 30 gallon containers with rainwater for watering plants. My fish are about an inch or two and cost about 45 cents each. Use about 30 scattered around different containers. No horse anymore. Try to keep ice off in winter, but just found a container with 4 fish. Hadnt seen them for year and half. Blackberries grew over. As long as 3' deep so raccoons don't get them. Thanks for what you're doing.

Generally yes, but living in England winter days are usually wet and I don't think it's fair to my horses to ride when whilst they are wet. So the winter is usually very groundwork based

How long do you find that they will keep after dehydrating? I am hoping they can last a year or so. I add silica gel packets to my dehydrated items in storage.
@naturallywilor
@naturallywilor 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how well it was dried and how clean and dry the jar is. If the jar is pristine and the nettles well dried then generally it can be stored for a good year or two :)

Hi Doug, I have never given my horses aspirin so I'm not sure what the answer might be. Perhaps cut an apple in half, dig out a small hole and pop the tablet in? It's how I give my 6 year old his homeopathic remedy :)

Hi 🙂 There's nothing to say you can't collect, dry and store if nettles are visible. The only issue would be the nutritional content. Spring is the best time to collect as the nutrition is at it's highest but I collect throughout the growing period as my herd love and benefit from dried nettles so much, I have to keep up with the demand!

Like your respectful attitude to the nettles and surrounding wild life! However, you should NEVER dry herbs in full sunlight as this diminishes their vital properties. Instead, choose an airy space where the herbs can dry out over some days, always avoiding exposure to direct sunlight.....
@naturallywilor
@naturallywilor 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jarod 🙂 Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. I completely agree that sunlight does affect some of the nutrients within nettles. However sun dried nettles still retain enough nutrients to be beneficial to horses and it is a great place for people to start. When people start collecting and drying it doesn't have to be perfect, not having a dehydrator or a place inside to dry plants shouldn't discourage people from giving it a go. So if drying outside on a sunny day is the only way available, I think that's ok. Both the person and the horse will benefit in the long run. Do you have a dedicated space to dry herbs? I would love to hear which are you favourite or go to herbs 😊

Well done for trying to be balanced. Ragwort in feed would be a problem, only the most starving horse would eat it as a plant, it tastes horrible. Hence it is seen near me in fields with horses who are excellently kept and do not go near it. It is a vital plant to insects especially the threatened cinnabar moth. The current laws are pre-eco times. I have non grazed, non cut for feed fields with ragwort contained by tactical pulling and cut lanes. I hope conversations like yours inform a needed debate and education on ragwort.
@naturallywilor
@naturallywilor 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment 🙂 I completely agree with you that only a starving horse would eat ragwort, 2 of my herd came to me with ragwort poisoning and it is clear from their behaviour around food that they know what it is to be hungry! Thank you for sharing how you manage ragwort, I am always interested in hearing how other people do things. I am hoping to look into ragwort more, go in depth into the current laws and find out why it is just ragwort that seems to have such a bad rep and some of the other poisonous plants are not as well known about. I would love to hear any further thoughts you have on the subject 😊
