Hearing a lot more buzz about panel speakers lately. I had pair of Martin Logan SL3. Set up biamp w right tubes. They really do have advantages over box speakers.

Heard my first set of BC150’s the other day. Bermester speakers are a delight. For as big of a cabinet as they appear, they instantly “disappear” once any signal is put through them. Whatever you could possibly expect from a speaker, they will check every box. I’m still moved from the listening session. I mean here I am searching Bermester videos on you tube.. 😂

So, I am biased. I have a pair of these. Ken personally installed them a few weeks back. As a long-time audio nut I can confirm every positive note mentioned in the comments. These are simply spectacular. I am running them with Airtight monos and pre-amp with streaming through a Linn DAC. The amount of bass these produce is astounding. It really doesn't seem possible. Plus, the bass is as clean and as tight as anything I have heard. It is really a marvel. There is nothing shrill or fatiguing about these and they cast a massive soundstage. On well recorded material they will change your definition of high fidelity. I have owned everything from Vandersteen to Linn to Harbeth and Magnepan. Big, small, you name it. These are end-game.

Okay ... I'm gonna be a "naysayer".... Have you ever heard of "mid field cancellation"? This is a psychoacoustic function locked to the size and position of your head. When you are dead center of an acoustic image the timing difference of the speakers to your left and right ears causes an out of phase condition which causes a dip in response at about 2khz. Moving your head just a couple of inches will cause a clearly noticeable shift in tonality. About 2 inches off centre, pink noise will brighten very noticeably. Now look how those speakers are positioned ... with the spikes you are dead center of the image, so you get the cancellation, the ones with the fancy rubber feet will place you a few inches off center where you do not get the mid field cancellation effect... so they will sound a bit brighter, which is exactly what I heard when you played the pink noise. You were hornswaggled by a clever trick in speaker positioning. Had they placed those speakers so the pads were either on the inside pair or the outside pair, you would have remained dead center in the image and it's unlikely you would have heard any difference at all. See this video for a clear example of the effect ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/imnFnnSJpbqYnpIsi=oeoW-_HL8X20CkFJ

You need to watch the follow-up video I did at CAF 2024. Even off axis with pink noise, you can hear the difference. I agree that this demo seemed off... More like a phase issue than positioning, but they offered for me to do further testing at CAF. They are also sending me feet to test on my own speakers at home where I have 100% control and more familiarity with the system.

@@AudiophileJunkie The "delta" you spotted, came through here clear as a bell, on pink noise. Your comment that it's out of phase is correct, but only in the mid-range. It's a sound signature I've heard many times when setting up speakers. (You know they're right within a few millimetres when you hear the dip in mids while moving side to side at your listening position.) I will check the CAF 2024 video as well. Happy listening.

@AudiophileJunkie Jason, thank you for the excellent show coverage and the insights into the vendors, brands, people, and products...and not just the extreme high-end, but at every budget level as well. IMO, it's really important to maintain accessibility to good quality entry-level products and mid-tier products in order to draw in the younger generation of HiFi enthusiasts to the hobby and the enjoyment of music. I also appreciate your acceptance and realization of the immense power and precise control/tuning that can be achieved through the use of active crossovers via DSP. I've been a musician (primarily a saxophonist & drummer/percussionist) and HiFi enthusiast since the mid-1980s. And from the mid-1990s to this day I have incorporated the use of active DSP in designing & building DIY loudspeaker systems for both my home recording studio and home 2-channel systems, as well as high end car audio systems, for which good sound quality would be IMPOSSIBLE to achieve without multi-channel DSP. Over the years I've had the opportunity to use just about every high-end TOTL drive unit/transducer in my various DIY systems, including Accuton, Scanspeak Revelator & Illuminator, SEAS Prestige, Ciare, BMS, Purifi, BlieSMa beryllium, Focal Utopia, Mundorf AMT, B&G planars, RAAL ribbons, Dynaudio Esotar2, Acoustic Elegance, SB Acoustics Satori & Textreme, MicroPrecision, Hiquphon, Audio Technology C-Quenze, Fostex, JBL, ATC, etc... Pro audio/live club/concert venue/arena/concert hall FOH Engineers have been using active DSP for the loudspeaker systems and "room correction" since its first inception, as they understand the true power and control that is only achieved through these systems. In the early days I began using multi-channel pro audio processors such as the RANE RPM-88, dbx Driverack 480, etc. Even the old and cheap ~$300 Behringer DCX2496 UltraDrive Pro and DEQ2496 UtraCurve Pro DSP and Analyzer rackmount units that are still sold today can provide better sound quality in comparison to the majority of passive crossover designs via their fully adjustable active crossovers, digital delay/time alignment, and PEQ (when properly set up), as compared to the much more limited control you have when using passive crossover components. Like everything else in audio, these DSP "Loudspeaker Management" systems have improved exponentially over the years, but generally only studio and live sound/FOH engineers utilize them because 95% of the HiFi & "audiophile" community are simply unaware and ill-informed. Active Crossover Networks do not have passive inductors, capacitors, resistors, and other components that can oversaturate and dynamically compress the audio signal, and/or change properties/values over time, as well as waste power through dissipated heat. With active crossover networks, the power from your amplifiers can be optimized for each individual driver for maximum performance within its passband without wasted power, clipping distortion, etc. I'm not saying that ALL passive crossovers are "bad" or inferior, especially if they are well-designed and use high quality components. The Swiss made PSI Audio Studio Monitors are good evidence of this. But it is exponentially easier to design, control, and divide the audio signal in a crossover network with much more precision and without signal degradation when using active DSP crossover filter networks, time alignment, and PEQ. The only real circumstance where SOME active DSP loudspeakers are not ideal is when monitoring real-time studio tracking sessions (recording & monitoring the individual instruments or a full band in a studio) where the latency/signal delay due to the DSP can be off-putting, akin to watching a video or movie when the sound is out-of-sync with the picture. However, the modern CPUs and DSP chips that are currently in use have such a small amount of latency or delay that this is for all intents and purposes imperceptible. But this is one reason why the lead engineer at PSI Audio has continued to design and build their studio monitors with high-quality passive crossover networks. PSI Audio does, however, use Active DSP in some of their products, and I would HIGHLY recommend looking into and using their active AVAA bass trap devices, which are much more efficient and precisely "tunable" to the particular modal bass issues that typical listening rooms will exhibit below the Schroeder Frequency. These active, "tune-able" bass traps are MUCH more effective and exponentially smaller than what you can achieve through the use of typical passive bass traps that will require a very large surface area and volume to be effective and still may not target the specific offensive frequencies. The improvement in bass detail, speed, dynamics, and articulation are impressive when the AVAA are properly implemented! I apologize for the long-winded comment, but some things just cannot be described or explained in proper detail in just a few short words.

Fair enough, but it's wise to know the people behind a brand because you will never know the TRUE quality unless you get comfortable with the people in charge. On the whole, there's a huge advantage to smaller family run operations if you value certain things. Plus...Your logic excluded brand name on a chassis and aesthetics, so McIntosh and SF aren't exactly the highest value equations if you remove those things from consideration...on top of now putting people in charge that run a totally different brand with a different philosophy. It would be wise to rethink your position on not caring who owns the company because the fact is...it matters.
@dan-sc7fm

@AudiophileJunkie While I understand your wanting to help the little guy or family business, I'm not so sure family owned equates to better quality. One only needs to do a little research to find what's under the hood of the unit to discover who is and isn't cutting corners. There are plenty of mom and pop restaurants that make terrible food and are clueless about how to run a business. Aesthetics and brand names are of little concern to me. I am listening to music, and I don't really care about the design of the box it comes from. And as far as who owns the company, if the new owner changes things up, well, it better be for a better product. Again, it doesn't take much to notice with one's ears and eyes a quality product. Great sound,quality parts, price. Big or small, you provide that to the consumer, you will survive in this market.

Most of the best restaurants are NOT chains...that's pretty common knowledge and accepted although it's true that many of the worst can be small, family owned too. Thus, it's not about blanket generalizations, but it's not wise to ignore that factor and thinking a company like Bose being owners won't impact the brand and "it doesn't matter" as your comment said. It can and likely will matter a ton...we'll see if it's for the better or worse, but when large companies are involved and private equity, I can tell you first hand that financials play a large role in the equation...which doesn't always mean performance, quality and price that you value.

@AudiophileJunkie I never said the best restaurants are chains. In fact, it is quite the opposite. In fact, it requires a talented and passionate chef and crew to make a great meal. Believe me, I have, throughout my early years, worked at many high end, and low-end restaurants. And, I know that the restaurant business is one of the craziest and most difficult businesses to succeed. But, as a consumer with limited resources, I really don't give a rats ass who owns the company or restaurant. What I care about is what's on my plate that I'm paying for. If Bose screws it up, then the business will suffer, and the consumer will walk out and not come back. If the private equity boys screw things up, well, it won't be the first or the last time. But I don't have to continue to eat what they serve.

Definitely a killer deal, as well as a great benefit to the various manufacturer's demo rooms. 👍👍 However, as I mentioned in another comment here, the PSI Audio AVAA active bass traps MIGHT be a more efficient and cost-effective solution, especially when WAF is a consideration. 😉 For typical passive bass traps to be effective, they need to cover a large surface area and volume within the room, in addition to not always being able to place them in the ideal position(s) within the room in order for them to be most effective. And with all that, passive bass traps may still not effectively target the specific problem modal frequency or frequencies, and/or will over-damp the bass response in other areas while potentially trying to target and improve your room's specific modal issues. IOW, passive bass traps are like using a "spray & pray" shotgun when you really need the precise long-range accuracy of a sniper's rifle. Active bass trap systems such as the AVAA by PSI Audio will require exponentially less space and fewer obstructions in your listening room, and they are "tune-able" to the precise problem frequency or frequencies and modal issues of your room. If at all possible, I would highly recommend listening to a live demonstration of the AVAA active bass trap systems. When they are properly implemented, even using average loudspeakers or subwoofers, the improvement in the perceived midbass & bass detail, speed, articulation, and dynamics are impressive.
