It's almost like it could be a late-night Harlem club in 1969--the hot band is pumping out the latest Top 40 hits with the lady organist leader smoking all the way. But the lady isn't Trudy Pitts--it's blonde Swede Merit Hemmingson, cooking with gas even if the material is not what jazz purists would care for. Merit later found her niche with a eerie but compelling take on Swedish folk music (a genre you would not associate with a Hammond organ, but she pulled it off), but this album indicates that if she had chosen the straight-ahead jazz route eventually, she would've rivaled any American as a Hammond burner.

A beautiful and unique album. The European jazz modernists are far less famous nowadays than the wave of Avant Garde players who came after, but this is still a gem to be treasured, along with similar classics of the French, Polish, Belgian, English, Dutch and German scenes.

@@rusketeriller There are lots. Have you heard Jazz Suite Inspired by Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood by Stan Tracey, that has a similar feel. I do think the Swedish scene was perhaps the finest of the 50s/60s European sets, however.

Correction: Sahib's magnificent solo is on "Folklig visa..." "Uti vår hage" , though, features impressive playing by Mr. Wallin himself!

Wallin was really an "allrounder" and excellent trumpeter as well. Inspired, of course, of the collaboration between Miles & Gil Evans he made this milestone album, which many today's Swedish jazz fans never heard of. A bonus: SAHIB SHIHAB! Listen to his intense growling and touching flute solo on "Uti vår hage". (22.:00) Another highlight is the Norwegian tenor player Bjarne Nerem's beautiful solo on "Allt uppå..." Top class! I almost forgot to mention the last item of the album with Shihab's driving baritone and the brilliant arrangement.
