Fiji celebrates Krishnajanmashtmi with grandeur. Ram Navmi & Ganesh Chaturthi are celebrated similarly.

Absolutely. That is what I loved about Fiji and Indo-Fijians. They made the country come alive, as if it were India herself. No wonder it used to be called Little India. Thanks for watching, hope you are well.

In India, you are supposed to feed 7 beings before you put a morsel of food your mouth (read that some where, correct me if I am wrong). one of the delights is to put things out for birds. Once I got into really cooking special ones for them, keeping sweets and rice pudding and khichri and daal. Then Dan & Isa reminded of something I already knew. Its not healthy for the birds. Just feed them nuts and seeds. Usually folks fill the bird feeder. I prefer leaving it out every morning. Its a ritual. This is from a few years ago. I love watching them eat. Gives me a sense of peace. As if, I am taking care of my guests, with wings!! Angels you know!! They are SOOOO smart. They know the time. The moment they see me, they announce it to others. Other time they wake me by their chirping. The magpies are smarter but also bigger. So, on magpie can make many birds fly away. I used to shoo magpies away so these little sparrows could get something to eat. Now, I alter. Sometimes I shoo the big birds away, other times I let them have their day. But the chirping of these little ones is the most melodious sound!! Its spring, its their season. Things with wings are returning. Remember --as they say in Sanskrit...Atithi Devo Bhava. Guests are Gods....A little water, a fist full of seeds (yes, I have switched to seeds now) and they delight you with their songs and frisky flights...

Thanks a lot for this video, Charu ma'am. I have always felt the lack of mentors at various levels. In India, at the school level and for STEM, there is a change. The central Government's Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) has been a game-changer. AIM has given all those who have wanted to give back to their alma mater or society, in general, an opportunity to connect with schools and mentor the kids for several programmes and contests being conducted by AIM themselves. I have been grateful enough to have gotten an opportunity early this year to participate in this initiative. It is wonderful to mentor and learn from School kids. Their enthusiasm and creativity rub off on a person like me who is going through a mid-life crisis.

However, academia (science) in India acc to me (based on my limited experience) seems to be living in a bubble. Many of the research projects yield very little tangible outputs. There is very little, genuine impact of the research on society. There is a disconnect between Industry and academia. There is so much stress on rankings and publications. As a person with prior industry experience, a lot of the research that happens is akin to reinventing the wheel. I do not have a problem with publications per se. However, i believe one must have done something genuine to talk or share with the world in the first place. There is very little science being done and engineering work is often repackaged as science and passed of as research. I feel over emphasis on publications and rankings is doing a lot of damage to learning, know;edge seeking, research and contribution to society. It is very difficult for private universities to compete with the longstanding IIT's and IISc. PhD has become like engineering. All this leaves very little space for genuine mentors. The few that are there manage to survive the chaos and pettiness with great difficulty.

Thanks for engaging Ganesh. Let me return in a few days to respond in detail because you bring up some good points. Mentors are required in life. In professional and personal life. We have parents and siblings and gurus for our spiritual life. But many 'new professions' require mentors. or we need to learn to have a continuous dialogue with ourselves about how we want to chart our careers.
@GaneshNarayanan142 жыл бұрын
True, ma'am. Talking to a mentor is like having a Satsang. I have a few friends and seniors who can help me get out of a rut, but they are not from the same professional domain. So although they can help out with generic things, I am left to fend for my domain-specific issues and frustrations. I love your point about having a constant inner dialogue for every situation. When one begins to have this ongoing internal dialogue, one begins to practise Dharma, knowingly or unknowingly. We are more discerning. Our conscience then tends to guide us. We will most likely be at loggerheads with people and circumstances when we act out of conscience. Our conscience also lets us know when things are beyond our intellect's grasp, and we might need to surrender and accept the situation with Prasada Buddhi. It is an excruciating process and takes a lot of courage to stand by what our conscience says, but it is also fun sometimes. There is a quote that I'm constantly reminded of: “When nothing is for sure, we remain alert, perennially on our toes. It is more exciting not to know which bush the rabbit is hiding behind than to behave as though we knew everything.” - Carlos Castaneda

Thanks for the comment Ganesh. Mentors are important at every stage of life. Today people pay to get life coaches etc. (I will talk about them at some point). I did not know about ATAL,/AIM, I will check it out. Thanks for sharing. Also, I know what you mean by getting energised by the students. That is what has kept me in this 'business'. Also, mid-life crisis is actually a very good reason to ask yourself what you want and would you change your direction now. And it may not be mid-life crisis (we have all these words), it may simply be the time to develop more skills and chart a different direction. I think if we look at it like it is the latter, it sounds more fun! :)

@@GaneshNarayanan14 I am not always up on all the details how it works in India but i know from my own experience, the private school education/public education (I taught for about 6 months in one and studied my whole life in non-governmental schools) --had become stale. My undergraduate is in home science and I always felt that we did not utilise its full potential. Publications are great, only if they truly contribute to something. Often they become a 'tick mark'. Innovation requires a playfulness and space to create and think outside the box.

Thank you for this video Charu ji. There is a dire need to discuss the significance of mentorship in academia. I believe having a mentor takes one's academic career to a fruitful direction and the grooming of a scholar does require mentors. I did not have an academic mentor until recently. But now I consider myself lucky since I have one. One can always fall back upon, depend upon one's mentor to guide us towards the right path.

Mentors are very important Nidhi. Getting mentors is also a matter of luck. My purpose with these videos is to make people aware that sometimes when we are lost --it just means that we need to seek guidance. If those we get help from --are trusted, long-term, people who wish us well....those are mentors. WE ALL NEED THEM...thanks for visiting the channel.

Thanks Jelaine for visiting the channel. This is from Fiji, and I saw how Indo-Fijians had kept the same traditions that they brought from India more than a 100 years ago.
