Ok a quick question. I just built my first NAS. I haven't built a system in about 20yrs. But anyways. I'm running True Nas Scale, I started with 4 3TB drives, running Raid 1. My other drives I was waiting for came in a month later, so I'd like to add them to my system, but I have about 40 movies stored on them now. How can I add my other drives to my system and make it a Raid 2 without losing those movies? Next question. Now that this system is up technically what's the best way to connect my tv's and other devices to it? Everyone seems to say this way or that way is the easiest. I'm trying not to have cables running all over this house

I'd say connecting it to the app would be best. As for the raid question that is a tough one. Maybe you use the new ones in there own pool and when you expand put movies into that pool. Ive never encountered a case where I had data on disks and had to move to a new pool but it should be possible if you do some digging.

Well the reason why I wanted to go to a Raid 2 or 3, is because I now have a total of 20 3TB drives. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 900 plus movies that I need to convert and upload not including a ton of audio books and to have all that sitting on just one main drive and it failing is what I'm concerned about. All these drives are used from eBay. Eventually I'm going to slowly upgrade to maybe 10TB or larger drives. But until then. So if I create new pools using these other 14 drives it would still be recognized as only one large drive or do I have to do something special to have or link the other pools together

Don't feel guilty trust me I plan on having more as I grow and find a need. I am keeping it simple sense I haven't found a need to have more yet. My awesome sys admin friend has TONS of vlans in his home environment.

Nice! I am actually working in on TrueNAS this weekend. I am running Proxmox right now with a few containers and now creating a TrueNAS container to create a few shares for storage. Are you planning on running any containers in TrueNAS?

Nice setup, you actually gave me an idea to use my smart switch before my dumb router and buy another dumb router to have 2 vlans for cheap :) And regarding the cheap used hardware, that is fine, but you must consider the power usage, older equipment use a lot of electricity, which is not cheap anymore unfortunately...

Looking good so far! Love to see more videos of how you are setting up your homelab. I have been working in IT for 20 years and I finally built out my home lab recently just to keep up with skills that I do not get to utilize anymore. Using my homelab to get away from big tech.
