tbf they preferred this version too, the one in the show was a compromise made because amazon didn't renew them until they had statistics for season 3's performance, so they had to rewrite most of the season to make the season finale also a series finale and I quote from an interview with Sam: In the series, the scene plays out much differently, by design. “Making a TV show is tricky because you want to put it all in there, and definitely we wanted to honor that moment, but the season has to end,” Riegel explains. “We don’t know if we’re ever going to make another season of this show or another episode of this show, and the way that it worked out, the last scene of the [The Legend of Vox Machina] could’ve been Scanlan saying ‘Fuck you’ to everybody and leaving, which didn’t seem like a really great way to end the show. So we adapted it into something that I think is still bittersweet and holds the intention of that moment, but if we ever do get further, future seasons, we have plans to honor that moment in a different way.”

They wasted an entire episode+ on keyleth doing a simple scry spell when they showed Ripley actively using the scrying eye. They wasted animation time on shoehorning in zerxus for no reason. They could have easily done A bards lament. They just chose not to even knowing how much fans were looking forward to it. Its a defining moment in the campaign. Without going through that, the characters aren't even the same people. It makes no sense NOT to do it.
@the_enderslayer2 ай бұрын
except there wasn't really any better point in the story to put it, they wrote themselves into a corner here, Scanlan is already working through his shit, he already "died",, he already left, and the entire crew is now split up so who would even be there for him to get mad at? Better yet, what would that mean for Tary? We just not getting Tary? They can't make another death scene for Scanlan in season 4 with a good amount of buildup and payoff and still have time to do the rest of the actual season 4 story but that's the saddest part, this corner they're in is one they can easily walk out of by simply deciding not to adapt the scene at all, problem solved all because they wanted to play it safe
@frenchtantan2 ай бұрын
@@transientanus Did you even read what Sam said? A version of it is going to happen in season 4, chill out... It just didn't make sense to have it at the end of season 3 in case it was to be the actual finale, and that's a perfectly valid reason. Also, remember that the people who played the characters are literally in the writer's room. If there is a moment that they feel wouldn't fit in the story they want to tell, it's their choice, not ours, and we have to trust them that at the very least, they are content with what they come up with.

S3 was building up this moment... They had it... It was right THERE! Yet they didn't.
@frenchtantan2 ай бұрын
It was most definitely not building up to this moment. This would've been an insult to Pike, who's been caring for Scanlan this entire season, and it would've made Scanlan into a straight up hypocrite, since the team never even held him accountable for not being there when Percy died (they could've, I was waiting for Vex to lash out, but even she didn't). Sam also said the following in a recent interview about the Lament: “Making a TV show is tricky because you want to put it all in there, and definitely we wanted to honor that moment, but the season has to end. Hard disagree about the build-up. Pike cared about Scanlan too much for this, and even the rest of the team didn't lash out about him being absent when Percy died, and they definitely could've. On the contrary, I feel like they built AWAY from it. As a non-campaign viewer, seeing some variation of the lament at the end of S3 as it is, I would've been "Wow, Scanlan is an asshole and a hypocrite, screw him". Not a great idea. And Sam agrees it seems as it was the idea, here's an interview for Paste Magazine from October 24, 2024. He says the following regarding the lament: “Making a TV show is tricky because you want to put it all in there, and definitely we wanted to honor that moment, but the season has to end. @the_enderslayer2 ай бұрын
they've even been building to it in seasons 1 and 2 as well, Scanlan has never been treated seriously until season 3, but unfortunately they felt the need to change the back half of the season to fit this new version of the ending, like everyone suddenly being kind to him after dismissing him all show and saying nobody cares about his problems in the first half of the season, it feels like the Whitestone fight must've been the turning point where they started editing his arc, because that absolutely felt like it was going to be setup for at least Vex to be even more pissed at him (since she especially has been the most demeaning to him all show and especially this season), but then she ended up not even really commenting on it I could honestly feel the differences in the second half, a lot of the choices, even beside Scanlan's stuff, were made in the interest of accelerating toward an early series finale, since they didn't have confirmation of season 4 being greenlit yet

@frenchtantan2 ай бұрын
Easy: they didn't know whether they'd be allowed a season 4 at the time of production. Ending season 3 with this lament would've felt sour. Also the end of season 3 was probably recorded as Sam was recovering from cancer, so not the best time for such an emotional beat.
@Sizzox2 ай бұрын
@@frenchtantan A season and even an entire show can end on a sour note and it can still be great. Tons of shows have bittersweet endings that are still amazing. It would have been one thing if bards lament was a cliffhanger but that's not the case. Ending it on a sad note would have been much more preferable than not including one of the greatest CR moments we've ever had. Also, they record the audio very very early on in production so I very much doubt Sams cancer were a factor. Sam only found out that he had cancer a little more than half a year ago and went into recovery a few months after that. His voice lines would have already been recorded way before. As a comparison, Lance Reddick died over a year and a half ago and all his voice lines for Thordak were already done and used in season 3.
@frenchtantan2 ай бұрын
@@Sizzox I wouldn't be so sure about Sam. Lance Reddick had way less lines than him in the show, and I'd even point out that BOTH scarcely spoke in the second half of this season. But, for the sake of argument, I'll give you that one, because ultimately, these are only assumptions on both of our parts. However, for the ending, my apologies, I misspoke. "Sour" isn't the proper word, nor is "sad". Assuming season 3 could've been the last one, ending it with a Bard's Lament would've felt *unsatisfying*, something the end of the campaign itself wasn't. An ending should tie up as many important character arcs as it can, and the Bard's Lament would literally create a new one. A sad ending? I'm all for it. A bittersweet ("sour") one? Sure. Lore-related loose ends? Why not, they can make more comics if need be. An unsatisfying one for the characters? Now THAT would suck. As good as the Lament is, it is not worth keeping for the risk of having an ending that would disappoint many fans, probably you included, because it would stray away from the spirit of the campaign's ending. Ultimately, I see it being a bargaign: which story beat do we drop? Lastly, I'd add that we ARE getting a fourth season, so it's not out of the question that we can still get this scene, especially with how Scanlan left the group. Think about it: - Keyleth and Vax left for her to complete her Aramenté and take her place as Voice of the Tempest, leader of her people. - Vex and Percy are headed to Whitestone, where the latter will presumably take on active responsibilities as a nobleman. - Grog and Pike I don't see relinquiqhing adventuring, what with him loving to fight and her always having had aspiration to do good (way more than in the campaign). My point is, they all left to take on, or accompany someone for, some degree of "greater good" responsibility. Scanlan however? He left for personal reasons. It might take an awful lot to convince him it's worth it to risk all that, and he may even lash out.
@Sizzox2 ай бұрын
@@frenchtantan Sure I can agree with your main point here that it would sort of leave things a bit too unresolved. If the fight had been done and it would have ended that way, I probably wouldn’t feel good about that either. But the thing is that if we hypothetically wouldn’t have gotten a season 4 then I am really not sure that this season 3 finale that we got would have been any better of an ending for the show. From my point of view it seems like they had two options: Either they do the campaign accurate bards lament and try to make it into a somewhat alright ending if they aren’t renewed. But if they are renewed the payoff will be better. Or they go for this safer option that will only really pay off if the show isn’t renewed. Maybe it’s easy to say now that the show is already renewed but it feels a bit wack to not aim high here. And yeah they could technically fit it in during the next season but at that point they have to 1. Build up why Scanlan would leave, 2. Make him leave, 3. Bring him back and 4. Warm him up to the group again. This is a lot of steps for just one season when 2 of them could have easily been done already if they had gone that route.
@frenchtantan2 ай бұрын
@@Sizzox Like you said, it's safer, which is also subjectively my prefered path, so we can agree to disagree on that part aha. As for the possibility of seeing the lament in S4, they don't need to make him leave. He can just refuse with the lament, then join later. He can have his resolution as a B-plot while the other start, and finally making a grand return. They kinda did that for Umbrasil, so they'd have to take a different approach, but it could be done, and more quickly than you realize. I've also been giving more thoughts and remember how he's the only one in the party who's never fully let go of his reluctance to fight? It was always to save his own skin, but this time, going back to the front will mean he's at risk of leaving Kaylie alone once more. I don't think convincing him to fight with aspirations of heroism will cut it this time. They'd have to appeal to his connections to the group, and then... Well, road paved.

Spoilers for lovm season 3 While I can see the direction they have gone to really set up Scalan as the hero of the season, especially with that 2 gods situation in the end, it's a shame that they aren't going to animate this. It was a pivotal movement of heart break but without the hours and hours to be able to lay down the ground work, this moment would have come out of no where and lost its meaning. Also clever from a meeting point of view for critical role - is going to get everyone talking about the difference between the show and the stream, and potentially open up to more audiences that the stream is so good, and just how much they've had to cut. Same for the goldfish scene. We aren't going to get it by the looks of it because it would take too long to explain how Marisha didn't realise what the layout was, losing the hilarious moment. Again though, so many people will be going "why did they take out the goldfish!!!"

Scanlan snapping was the slowest buildling eruption I've seen as far as character development. To the untrained eye he is exactly what he says the rest of VM sees him as, a funny little man that plays music. To those more aware, he is probably the most nuanced character in the campaign, and he hides until the right moments. This was a cork firing out of a bottle and ricocheting off the walls for almost 7 minutes that not many saw coming. The delivery was immaculate as he rants off about everything the crew has done for each other - all the crazy feats the team went through for everyone but when it came to Scanlan they took his corpse, desecrated it with pudding and a dress then tied his hands above his head and brought his daughter to see him in that state. That's one of the biggest moments of "hahaha this is funny - oh wait we really just fucked up so bad"
