The last time I stood on this spot was 1991; and the ATC was a fairly well neglected structure, with peeling paint and rusted reinforing steel poking through. I applaud these people, not only for doing a marvelous job of restoring this tower, but teaching this tumultuous period in our nation's history. If you are fortunate to be on Oahu, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to visit Ford Island and the USS Bowfin submarine, the USS Missouri battleship, the ATC and, of course, the USS Arizona Memorial. A very moving experience!

I believe that's the airfield on Ford Island that Amelia Earhart took off for her transpacific crossing attempt!! Would love to visit the museum someday!!

@@thebunnyfoofoo a lot of various fixed stops along the route, like every hop on hop off does. It is not a drop on drop off🤣💨

Great historical documentary, but it is historical. On August 11, 2024 the Hawaii Mars made her last flight, landing in Pat Bay to go to the BC Aviation Museum. The Philippine Mars is destined for the Pima Air Museum, the days as firefighters are over.

CBC did a segment on this bomber a few days ago and I also heard a few old-timer engineers want to resurrect this bomber design into an updated version that can carry more than double the old "mere" 7000 Gallons. The engineers I talked to also want to create a cango-and-passenger-friendly version for short haul cargo and passenger flights using much newer engines. Since Victoria, BC-based Viking Air resurrected the deHavilland Beaver waterplane design few years ago, I would not be surprised that this workhorse design could ALSO be resurrected with much better engines, newer and stronger aluminum superstructure and much heavier cargo-carrying capacity. At 15,000 Gallons (i.e. 125,149 lbs), it would make a formidable short haul water landing capable cargo carrier and fire-fighting machine! I hope that reconstruction efforty goes well! It would be GREAT to see this design fly in a modern configuration. V
