This is a weird comment, but this is the essential version of the show for me. The lack of uniform really makes the black/white to color change pop so much more.

Not trying to take away from the work put in, but when you look at what they're physical demands are, then there's no reason why the music shouldn't be near flawless. That's the case for many other corps as well. I find myself getting bored after while (visually) because its getting to be alot of the same from different groups. March....stand and play, dance, walk to new spot, pose....horns up, play jazz run 4 counts to new spot move prop, stand and play 32 Count hold....END OF OPENER!

I have not listened in years. My take on this is: it is terrible. The drum corps as an art form is now dead completely. My sympathies go with the young people who have been staged to complete this ruin. Maybe 2020 is a blessing in disguise; a chance to restore the art form to the universal appeal it used to have. Peace.

Gregory Frech or you could just enjoy it for what it is and see how it develops over time. No hate, just try to think about how different the times were back when DCI was newer. Just like phone, or automated machines, things change. If you’re not a fan, so be it. But there are many people who still have a chance to see these shows and get inspired to do this.

The sad and unavoidable issue with the cancelation of the season is the impact the decision will have on the smaller corps. Some, for certain, *won't* survive a year off the field, without fundraising and souvenirs and corps fees from the members. Has the organization made provisions for those corps? I haven't heard abiyt it if it has and I think it needs to do something if that's not the case.

And it's always the same comments, isn't it? The exact same dead horse over and over. This is long, but sometimes people miss the overall contact. Their objections to what DCI has evolved into need to be addressed properly. In a way, I get it and I understand where they're coming from. These are the people who want hummable tunes with a beat you can dance to that are suitable to a *halftime show.* DCI *was* that, years ago, and to DCI fans of a Certain Age that's what they remember most fondly of the activity. There are things I experienced during my childhood and early adulthood that I myself remember perhaps more fondly than is really justified. I think we all can say there's something in our lives that fits that. Things change, though, and DCI stopped being composed of music suitable for halftime, with drill that was very symmetrical and uniform no later than 1993, when Star performed their "Medea" show. That show was historic. It didn't win first place, but it "won" nonetheless in the sense that it left an indelible mark on all corps' show designs and conceptual philosophies, as well as the activity itself. In a sense, Star "won" DCI *itself* in 1993. Its influence on the activity is still felt to this day and the mark that show left on DCI has proven to be permanent. Yes, it was an "avant garde" show at the time (it came at least a decade ahead of schedule) and many fans didn't much care for it. I've heard over the years that Star was sometimes booed off the field (which acted only to fuel the desire/need among Star's members to polish it until the booers were blinded by its shine). One specific complaint I still hear frequently is that there was too much silence in the show and the show was too short. My own response to that specific complaint as a former musician *and composer* is that the corps was performing the rests that were written in the original music and the show as a whole was *exactly* as long as it needed to be and not one beat longet. That it placed *second* to the Cadets that year, and considering how 'experimental' the show was, that placing is a *monumental* testament to how well it was performed (given how good the Cadets were in 1993) . That their audience didn't completely understand what they were seeing when they saw it (both in terms of the music itself *and* the future influence the show would come to exert on the entire activity) is only proof that DCI shows (the shows themselves--design, music, visuals, and performance) and the activity as a concept are both legitimate and unique art forms in and of themselves. After all, art is art whether or not it's understood by those who experience it, and oftentimes the personal interpretation of the viewer is itself part or even all of the point of the work. OR, as Steve Rondenaro said of the Cadets' "Dreamscapes in Four Parts with a Door" in a Finals broadcast over a decade later, "sometimes you just have to let art be art." DCI is *continuing* to grow and to change. The DCI Congress often approves rule changes that some fans take exception to. When I heard that the rules were chsnged to allow non-valve and non-'horn' brass instruments (trombones? French horns? Wut?) I have to admit that I didn't agree with the change myself and I didn't think it would meaningfully contribute to the activity. I was wrong: "Down Side Up" drove that hone to me, with bells on. It should have been obvious to me, given that it opens up the field of possible content. Mea culpa on that one. I'm sure there will be other changes to DCI that *you,* the Dear Reader, don't approve of as well, and *that's okay!* If DCI is to survive as an activity (especially after this season's entirely appropriate cancelation) it *has to* evolve. They've chosen a modern venue and that costs *money*, and probably quite a bit of it. Shows aren't getting cheaper to produce, and DCI has to be able to draw a broader audience to generate the income the corps and the activity both need to keep themselves going. Change is *inevitable*. This DCI isn't *that* DCI. some of us are just going to have to accept that. Or, as Blaine the Mono once said in Stephen King's *The Wastelands*, "'Tough titty,' said the kitty,' but the milk's still good.'" As an end note: people sometimes ask what I'd do if I won the Powerball lottery (the big ones, north of a half billion bucks). I'd think I'd choose to rectify the regrettable necessity of moving Finals indoors to Lucas Oil in order to eliminate variables in Finals Week as they added electronics, etc. I think if I win the Powerball I'd fund a purpose-built *campus* (including a stadium specifically for DCI and designed with the activity in mind) for all of Finals Week, with auditoriums and other facilities for the other events, classrooms designed for DCI instrumentation in mind for clinics and masterclasses, and intended to be available throughout the year for any regional shows that make sense, and for rehearsal time for the corps and for local area schools. If I did this, the stadium itself would be one with a *retractable roof* so Finals can finslly be held in the open air again. I've performed halftime at a few Lions games in the Pontiac Silverdome many many moons ago in my university's marching band; I know all too well that playing in that kind of barn is an *awful* thing to ask of any musician when they're under that kind of pressure! So yeah, I'd do that if I could, because *I absolutely love this activity!* There's nothing whatsoever bad or objectionable about it in any way and it's a fantastic expression of human creativity, artistic and athletic ability, and as a legitimate art forn of its own.

Well, it’s important to realize it’s not always abt energy, it’s abt execution. I could play the most robotically accurate song compared to another person who feels slightly more musical but makes more mistakes. If you can’t handle the extra sauce, don’t put it in. It just couldn’t be executed as well in CC. It may have been incredible but bd was cleaner in many aspects most likely. It’s not always abt hype, especially when it comes to competitions. That’s like saying we should give the nfl team with the coolest plays the win even though they scored less points
