Well, those are two very different basslines. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" was just beautiful. And man, "Valley" just rocks! And I love how that line can be played on a fretted bass, but just comes alive and has so much more color to it on a fretless. And I've always loved the sound of a fretless played with a pick. Cheers!

Tony, I actually learned about this song in the Hal Leonard instructional Book on Fretless Bass that I just dug out and was going through. You have a couple of songs in there. Very cool bass line. Merry Christmas.

I really enjoyed your video, Tony, and I understand completely what you are talking about and demonstrating. I play viola in the Seattle Symphony, and I live the way you discuss in my daily life--tendencies of certain notes, especially thirds, are due to functional harmony, and this is something you gain the ability to do over a very long period of time. As a bassist, especially a fretless bassist on the Godin A4 I used to have until it was stolen, I played unlined because it felt more natural to me to play with intuitive intonation, as though I were playing the cello. I got around on the fingerboard with ease and could think the destination of a long shift and arrive in tune. Unfortunately, I eventually had to set aside my bass playing because the larger and harder left hand calluses were for several reasons incompatible with playing the viola at the highest level. Man, I miss playing bass, especially fretless! I do have a great time on the electric viola, though. 🙂

I always thought this a fantastic rock song. When I first discovered the live video I thought who is the bass player. You just looked like every teenage boys idea of a rock bassist. One cool looking dude. Never mind your fantastic live performance.

Congrats on your Fretless. It was exactly the same for me when I first got my Fretless many years ago. Even though I’d played fretted for a number of years, Fretless was a whole new world. Stick with it, it’s worth it. If you haven’t already, I recommend checking out my TrueFire Fretless Foundations instructional course. Very affordable and I’ve had great feedback about it. 👍🏻😊

In times before, you've said her fingerboard is about gone. As shes yr precious baby,I'm sure Fender would replace her fingerboard w either rosewood or ebony/ not the neck,as her yrs of experience could remain intact,but she could continue to sing thru more yrs. Cheers,mate!
@FretlessMonster2 күн бұрын
Thanks for that. Yes I’ve thought about doing it, but there’s something sacred and meaningful about keeping that original fingerboard. There’s so much music and many memories associated with it, and it still plays - I use it for certain sessions, not travel. I think I’d be heartbroken if I replaced it. 😩🤷♂️🤩 Cheers!

@FretlessMonster8 күн бұрын
The P Bass (with added DiMarzio pick up) is my dream bass - just like my Fender signature model. I used the MusicMan Sabre for a little because it had an ebony fingerboard and looked a bit like a P Bass. But I couldn’t get my sound from it. Eventually I had Fender make that same design P Bass but with an ebony fingerboard. It turned into my signature model in 2006. 🤩🙏🏻

Fretless instrument players are so impressive. Thanks for your demo here. Picking the correct fundamental note position is super talented and skilled. Then you can play with the pitches between the notes, which draws upon more talent! Lots of experience must needed I'm guessing. Your skill is amazing and inspiring. I'm a composer and keys player in Australia. I like this version with more pronounced bass and also bass following the chords. The overall live vibe increases in the second part of the song I feel and rockets towards the end. Thanks for the emotional performance back then. And thanks for your slice of history :)

Thanks for your great comments! They mean a lot. Fretless is such a great instrument. It took a few years for me to “own” the Fretless - and occasionally it still owns me! The goal really is to stop thinking about the playing side and simply express from the heart. I aspire to that when I play. This version with Kate all just fell into place. Dare I say it was easy. I followed my instincts and they liked it. 👍🏻🤷♂️🤩

What load of crap! There is no difference between a lined and unlined fretless bass. TF states he uses 'the dots' as a visual reference, the same as any lined fretless player may use the fretlines for. Always play with your ears, no matter if you got lines on your fretless or not. Discussion closed!

@@FretlessMonster you first came to my attention when you were on Roy Harper's albums. I saw him first at Wimbledon theatre in early 1980s on his Rizla album it caught my eye the cover and I saw you played fretless bass on some album tracks that I loved as I played violin at school for 3 years. Sadly I was taken the piss out of as guitars were way cooler in kids eyes with the ladies but I finally had £100 to buy one in the very early 90s secondhand and paid another £100 at a kind luthier for a decent bow in the sale and new strings, bridge and set up as it was made in 1930 on chech German border where violins were a traditional job. I hired one at school but I've been playing ever since and bought an epiphone EB0 bass made in Korea in 90s for £50 with a damaged volume knob but got it working and it's great . Maybe I will find a bass kit I can make up a fretless bass. Lutherie is a great skill I admire very much especially with the setting up of it so it plays so well.i do love some basses and alembic are great as are old P basses but my old musician mates showed me so much and watching how they got their tones through finger touch. Thank you so much for your wonderful music and for inspiring my keen interest now as an older guy enjoying the masala of sounds, styles of playing and the end results. You seem like an excited young teenager who has just got his first bass guitar after saving up from his newspaper round for many months. Us kids growing up years ago in the 60s and early 70s often had happy childhoods , full of excitement and a good gig was a couple of quid and singles were 70p and those mono 45 and 33 record players with the arm .

You are my favourite fretless bass player ever since i heard you on Roy Harper albums. I first learnt violin so fretless is quite natural and has advantages but take a lot of getting used to. We learnt wide for major and close fingers for minor . Im amazed now at electric violins cellos and how technology has come on. Thank you kindly Tony for your expert genius advice, you are a great inspiration and like Thunderfingers and Gail Ann Dorsey , jack Bruce and noe Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten you all add different shades to the audio landscape but some of these young musicians are just amazing like Mia Asana but also other string players like Stefan Grapelli, yehudi Menuhin , Ravi Shankar or even the great players, styles of mahavishnu orchestre, some of these amazing bedouin guitarists from Sahara desert and the great Nick Harper. Its beautiful and brings me so much pleasure and its the spaces in between the notes and the feel and interpretation thats wonderful and thats drawn me very much to some african, indian and gypsy and even old jazz, blues and classical european, indian or even different styles from places like Jamaica south america and even old appalachian and european folk with some great artists like Naomi Bedford who is inspired by using her music to tell a story. She has folk awards over many years for great folk albums with 5 stars yet doesnt get the airplay a bit like Roy Harper, brilliant yet non commercial. Thank you for your wonderful bass licks. You just like the finest vintage port you just get better with maturity . Cheers for this.

I used a white Sharpie oil-based paint marker to add dots on the side of the neck where the 1st, 11th and 13th "frets" are. And then put a little nail polish over the dots so they resist wear. Therefore there are no gaps of 3 semitones between 2 consecutive dots. More precise and easier to play.
@FretlessMonster20 күн бұрын
I hear you. Especially around the 1st fret. That’s a big space! My 77 Firm Fretless has those same spaces. I added the first fret marker to the signature model but not the 11th or 13th. I seem to manage okay without the 11 and 13.
