Hi Brittany, thanks for the videos! I recently applied for the summer 2024 Chinese school and it sounds like the program is now 8 weeks! I appreciate the insight and hope that I can find a group that is dedicated to getting the most out of the learning experience! :)

The college version I went this summer 2023. Definitely is much stricter for the language pledge. Also, have lecture for a hour in the morning, small class, and few days a week 1-1. In the morning. After, lunch you had free time to do homework or hangout. There was activities at 4pm the school provide. There were some field trip on the weekend. For example hiking and going into Burlington. There was bilingual assistance.

Is this program for high schoolers? I’m a college student and I applied for Middlebury’s summer program for college students & it’s 8 weeks long. Due to covid it’s online, but the price is still almost $10,000, which I honestly cannot justify for something that’s not in person...I’ve been accepted into the program but that’s w/o any scholarships since I applied so late. Currently debating if it’s worth it or not, especially because I can’t find any info about how good the program is and haven’t heard any other’s experiences.
@BrittanyJune3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nadya. The version of this program that I talk about in this video is for high schoolers. And it actually closed because of COVID and now they are just doing the college version. I didn't go to the college program, so I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure it's similar to the high school version, just longer and more strict on the language pledge (also you can have your phone in the college program). I don't have a clue what it would be like online, but I would say that unless you have to get fluent in a language really urgently for some reason, wait until they go back to doing the program in person. I can't imagine it would be nearly as enjoyable or effective online as it is in person, especially for $10,000. But that's just my opinion. it IS a great program, but I'd say wait til it's back to normal. Hope that helps :)

And yes, it is very sad of the summer program for high school students is closing. Languages are so important, and they can open so many doors to you. Also, I found that during high school, we didn’t really use the language as much during class. I took Spanish, German and French in high school and I would watch programs in Spanish TV, or talk to my neighbors who are from Germany, and do whatever I could to pick up the languages. I wanted to work as an interpreter for the UN, and I really enjoyed languages and I still do. Arabic was my 10th. The program at Middlebury was very intense, even over zoom, and I think Innoway, it was even more so because we were in front of a screen for so many hours a day… However, the one advantage was that we could get up and move around, I ordered McDonald’s Mc flurry’s during class, and since I was taking it from London, it meant that I would be up sometimes until midnight or later, so having a McFlurry was great. The other thing that I really enjoyed, was being able to do things you normally wouldn’t be able to during breaks during class. I took the last week of my class in France at my family’s house, so during the longer break, I went in the swimming pool. The day of the final, I also went swimming right before the final, just got out of the pool and put a shirt on. I think it helped me to be a lot more relaxed, even with the stress of the final. I got an a, even during a pandemic, doing something with a disability, and having it so late at night. By the way, we also had the clubs online, and the talent show over zoom, so it was still a lot of fun and very interactive. They also offered we can speak in classes, or speaking clubs if you wanted to practice outside of class. Since London also has so many Arabic speakers, and France does too, I had a lot of opportunities to practice so no need to be on campus with the full immersion program. I was still practicing quite a lot. I got into a taxi one day, and the driver was from morocco, so we spoke for 45 minutes in Arabic. It was a lot of fun, and he was very surprised that somebody from England was learning Arabic and could speak it so well. Learning languages really does offer you so many opportunities
@emaildavinam3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I attended the Middlebury College version in 2020, so our program was entirely online. I also have special needs, and I think I was possibly the second blind student they had had to learn Arabic. Yes, they are strict with the language pledge, but for first year students, or for the ones in the very beginning classes, we are allowed to use English until the third week, and during class, if there’s something you needed to know, for example I had no access to a dictionary like the other students did, so I would ask for quite a number of vocabulary words in English. Also, I was using a screen reader, and in order to type with an iPad, it took forever, not to mention the technology for Arabic is not that great, so I was still writing in English. So if any students with disabilities are watching this and love languages and would like to go for the program at Middlebury, don’t hesitate to do it. It’s a great school, and they are more than willing to go out of their way to help you. I really want to go to the summer program this year, and hopefully it will be in person.

Yeah, that's unfortunate about the MIL. Regular high school language classes are highly limited because 1) people are unmotivated because it is a graduation requirement so you have many people taking it just to get through (including me because I didn't see the importance of language learning when I was young) 2) high schoolers typically take 6-7 classes which means even if you want to learn you get 4-5 hours max of language instruction per week and you have to worry about homework from all the other classes

Fortunately there are a lot more tools for learning which I know you will cover next week but off the top of my head there are: 1)Apps like Duolingo (good for reviewing what you already know but not new material 2)KZbin videos of Peppa Pig (actually very good for beginner level) 3) Podcasts Luckily there are a lot more tools now than when I was a youth.

This is extremely late so I am not sure you will end up reading this but here goes: 1. What were some of the reasons Chinese interested you? 2. Have you or are you planning to visit China, Taiwan, or Singapore? 3. Are you continuing to learn Chinese right now? If so what resources/classes are you using? 4. Are there people where you live that are also Chinese speakers? Thank you very much for the videos.

Hi! Sorry I didn't see your comment. It didn't show up in my notifications for some reason. To answer your questions: 1. I started learning Chinese actually because my boyfriend was learning it in high school, and he did this same program the year before I did it, and after he came back from the academy, he wouldn't speak English with me. Even though I had no idea what he was saying, he would not speak any English with me because he loved and missed speaking Chinese all the time. It started to annoy me, so I decided that I would just have him teach me. I immediately fell in love with the language. I have always had an interest in learning other languages. I grew up learning some Danish, Spanish, and American Sign Language. I have always loved being able to communicate in different ways. I think the main thing that interested me about Chinese specifically was the beauty of the sounds and the simplicity of the grammar. People say that Chinese is one of the hardest languages to learn, and there is some truth to that, but I personally found it much easier than most romantic languages like Spanish. 2. I have not visited China, Taiwan, or Singapore, and due to this pandemic, I do not have any current plans to. My boyfriend, however, has. He went on the abroad version of this MIL program where they spent a month in Beijing and he LOVED it. I definitely want to go at some point in my life, but with everything that is going on in the world right now, it just doesn't seem like something I can do in the near future. 3. I, unfortunately, am not continuing to learn Chinese right now. I started at college and planned for the Chinese to be my minor, but the Chinese classes were just awful. I didn't feel like I was learning anything. I didn't connect with the teachers. It was just really bad, so I decided to just focus on my major and stopped speaking Chinese. It's very sad and I do wish I had stuck with it, despite the lack of classes. I do speak with my boyfriend in Chinese from time to time. We will have "Chinese days" where we spend the entire day in language, similar to the MIL program, but just for one day. It helps us remember what we already know and relearn things we have forgotten. If you asked me to speak Chinese right now though, it would not be as good as when I had gone to the academy. Some resources that we use are Pleco (the BEST Chinese dictionary app, in my opinion), watching movies in Chinese (one of my favorites is 不能说的秘密, in pinyin that is "Bu Neng Shuo De Mi Mi". We also watched some Christmas movies in Chinese), and just practicing it every day. Slow down to work on tones and you will begin to get faster at them. Say a sentence, then if you messed up the grammar, restate it correctly, etc. I actually am planning on making a video on how to teach yourself another language because that's what I did for 6 months and was able to skip 2 levels of Chinese classes. So stay tuned for that. 4. There aren't that many people that speak Chinese where I am from. But almost all towns have an authentic Chinese restaurant which is a great place to speak with real Chinese speakers. My boyfriend and I will go and order in Chinese and ask that the server speaks to us in Chinese, even if we are a bit slow. They are usually really nice about it. I hope those were helpful! Sorry, it took me so long to respond! :) Thanks for watching my video.

@@BrittanyJune Just out of curiosity, what interested your boyfriend in Chinese? I live in California which has a lot of Asians and there are a lot of non-Asians interested in Asian culture. But I am intrigued why non-Asians from other states learn Chinese. Anyways right now I am a high beginner in Spanish and Cantonese, and mid beginner in Mandarin. I hope one day to be fluent in all 3 but it is slow but steady progress. My issue is that I took Spanish in high school and my parents are from Hong Kong but I never was interested/committed to learning second languages until way into my adulthood. Learning languages when you are young is much more effective than learning in your 30s. Not that there is something magical about turning 30 but when you getting more into adulthood then more responsibilities and stuff going on that takes away time and energy from learning. So it is great that you are learning now.

Hey! I've been looking into the program but i have a few questions. What are somethings you wish you brought to the camp that you didn't. What are somethings you wish you knew before going. When does the program usually start in the summer and is there an age limit (I'm going into my senior year of high school and am wondering if I have to wait until 18 to go). Final question, what kind of homework do they give? Sorry this comment has so many questions! I love the two video you've made about the school!
@BrittanyJune4 жыл бұрын
Okay, first thing you should know is that the Middlebury College Summer Intensive Language Program and Middlebury Interactive Languages (MIL), which is the one I talked about in this video, are different things. The first one is for college students (18+) and lasts the entire summer (I think this summer it's like June 11-August 5) and the second one (the one I talked about in this video) is only 4 weeks long for high school students (ages 13-17, although I went after I had just graduated high school and I was 18 at the time, so you can still go if you are currently a senior in high school). Here a link to see the Middlebury College Summer Intensive Langauge Program: www.middlebury.edu/institute/academics/additional-programs/language/summer-intensive-language-program Here is a link to see the program I did, Middlebury Interactive Languages Summer Academy: www.summerlanguageacademy.com/summer-language-academy/summer-language-immersion-teens So you can get more information there. To answer some of your questions, I wish I had brought a fan for my room because there was no AC and it got very VERY hot, money for shopping when you go to church street, a small binder to keep in my pocket to help with keeping the pledge. I'm glad I brought my guitar because we didn't have our phones (the college version has phones, I'm pretty sure) so I had very little music stimulus. The type of homework you get will depend on your teacher. I didn't get very much homework but I know others who got more. For me, it was usually writing a couple paragraphs in Chinese using certain vocab words or grammar things we had used in class, then we had one-on-ones with our teacher and they would correct us. But again, it's different for every teacher so they might give you worksheets or whatever else. Let me know if you have any more questions. Hope this was helpful!

Hi! The upload time of this video couldn’t be more perfect!! I just started looking into the Spanish immersion program yesterday and I’m super excited :)) Do you think the students who go to this camp really care about learning their language?? Like, is it a really committed group of people?
@BrittanyJune4 жыл бұрын
This is gonna be a long answer so sorry in advance :) Like I said in this video, it's kind of a gamble. The first summer that I went to the academy, the group as a whole was not that committed to the pledge. There were a lot of people there where it was clear that their parents made them go. But, the second summer that I went, people were very committed. Overall, we all stuck the pledge. Usually, there are more slip-ups of English during the last week because people are kind like "omg it's the last week and we are almost going home," but then when you go home, all you want to do is speak the target language. So, whether the group is committed or not really depends on the summer and the program. The Spanish Academy is pretty strict about staying in language, so I would say that you are probably good on that front, and even if there are some people who aren't, the Spanish academy is usually so huge that you can find the people who are just as committed as you are. Also, don't underestimate the power you have as a student to one of your peers. My first summer, 2017, every Sunday we had a meeting with the director of the Chinese academy and she would tell us to stop speaking English over and over again. But nothing really changed and a couple people got sent home. But the last Sunday before the final week, I stood up and gave a speech about how valuable this summer is, how those who were speaking English around those who don't want to hear it is being super inconsiderate, etc. During that speech, I asked if I was the only one who felt this way and about 75% of people raised their hands and agreed with me. After that, one of the main guys who was speaking so much English stood up and formally apologized to me and everyone else and encouraged everyone to change. It wasn't until me, a student and not an RA or authority figure, stood up and said something about it that something really changed. The week that followed was pure language. I didn't hear any English until the last day when the pledge was lifted and it was just really great overall. I only wish I had said something sooner. I was too afraid that I was the only one who felt this way about the pledge, but I wasn't. And if that happens to you, chances are you are not the only one who feels that way. So don't wait until the last week to say something. Be kind, respectful, yet strong when asking people to stop speaking English. But trust me, if YOU are committed, your language will grow! Again, sorry that was such a drawn-out answer.

If you want to do the program for teens, they do not have Japanese program as far as I know. I believe they only have Chinese, Spanish, French, and Arabic at the moment. The program tuitions vary depending on when you sign up. The sooner you sign up, the cheaper it is. Here is a link to dates and tuition for the MIL 4-week program for 18 and under: www.middleburyinteractive.com/summer-language-academy/apply/dates-tuition If you are asking about the College one at Middlebury College itself, I have no idea how much it costs.
