My third great grandfather was a marble polisher in the 1860’s in Ottawa. What do you think he was doing for a living there? Is there a lot of marble somewhere?
@KappTechАй бұрын
Good question, I know we have a lot of silica sand. Never heard of us having marble. I used to play at an old abandon marble factory as a kid. Maybe there's a connection, I'll ask around
@MyCornerOnlineАй бұрын
@@KappTech Thanks for thinking on it. I was wondering if it were just someone that went into rich folks homes to polish their countertops, or if there is marble floors in the courthouse or other public buildings that he would maintain. It's his job listed on two marriage records.

Wow, I didn't know about this case. I stop in Litchfield for gasoline all the time. (I am not a suspect tho, b/c I was only 3 years old when Dennis disappeared) A fascinating case & now on my list of future topics. Thanks for the idea. I'm going to check this one out for research on the topic: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DqqYN7LGELsI&ved=2ahUKEwiIz6qV9MWJAxXPmIkEHdvXKMcQtwJ6BAgFEAI&usg=AOvVaw3thPGADVacIqBdWT_Ptkpm

Unmasking old-time racism in southern Illinois Pulling off the Sheets tells the previously obscured history of the Second Ku Klux Klan which formed in deep southern Illinois in the early 1920s. Through meticulous research into both public and private records, Darrel Dexter and John A. Beadles recount the Klan’s mythical origins, reemergence, and swift disappearance. This important historical account sets out to expose the lasting impact of the Klan on race relations today. The ideation of the Klan as a savior of the white race and protector of white womanhood was perpetuated by books, plays, and local news sources of the time. The very real but misplaced fear of Black violence on whites created an environment in which the Second Klan thrived, and recruitment ran rampant in communities such as the Protestant church. Events like the murder of Daisy Wilson intensified the climate of racial segregation and white supremacy in the region, and despite attempts at bringing justice to the perpetrators, most failed. The Second Klan’s presence may have been short-lived, but the violence and fear it inflicted continues to linger. This disturbing historical account challenges readers to “pull back the sheet” and confront the darkest corners of their past. Dexter and Beadles emphasize the importance of acknowledging the damage that white supremacy and racism cause and how we can move toward healing.

Crucial rolls in the war? Yeah, don't waste your time on the battles where a half a million men died, or the political centers where the disputes were argued. No, let's focus on a lightly populated dingleberry region.

You did a really good job on this. "Cairo" is pronounced either "Keh-ro" or "Kay-ro" by the people in this region. I live across the Mississippi from Southern Illinois. All along the northern border of the Ohio River you have a feeling of being in the South, as opposed to the North. Southern Illinois, Southern Indiana and Southern Ohio are culturally, linguistically, and genetically Southerners. Their accents, the foods they eat make them seem more Southern. We have the same thing here in Southern Missouri. It's very hard for us to identify with St Louis or KCMO. During the War Between the States many Southern Illinoisans fought for the South, many also supplied arms and aid to Southern armies in the region. I took 3 semesters of History of the South at SEMO State over 50 years ago. Our professor had done extensive studies of Southern Illinois in the War and I remember him saying that maybe as many 10,000 Illinoisans fought for the Confederacy. Not to be outdone, Alabama supplied about that many troops to the Union. It's unfortunate what has happened to Southern Illinois and Cairo specifically. Cairo should be a bustling busy port, but it's a ghost town, and a dangerous one at that.
