crankshaft endplay is decided by the sump gasket... or end gasket/s. it needs some crankshaft end play for oil to get to the ends of the crankshaft. i looked it up... from itty bitty (it was in MM .06mm which is itty bitty, to .60mm or .026" )crankshaft end play . i got .022" which is quite a bit to make the crankshaft go clunk clunk when pushing the crankshaft up/down with the sump bolts TIGHTENED TO 210 INCH pounds? WOW that is a LOT. some ppl use thread lock on the sump bolts... BLUE thread lock on CLEAN BRAKE CLEANED THREADS? if get them TIGHT WITH TORQUE WRENCH, they should NOT loosen/leak. i put grease on the threads/anti seize so the bolts dont.... get STUCK in the hole / break off. lube the centering pins (2) so they dont weld themselves in the sump holes with corrosion and have to FIGHT the sump cover to get it off. the gov, i throw out, run throttle cable straight to carb and get $10 fleabay digital tach/hour meter on machines i rebuild. cheap insurance to keep from overspeeding the motor. the opposed flathead should NOT be run over 4000RPM as the connecting rods do not like it and the flywheel can GRENADE and that is a LOT OF METAL EXPLODING RIGHT IN FRONT OF OPERATOR!!!!!!!! the flywheel nut is supposed to be like 150 FOOT pounds tight? WOW!!! i lightly oil the crank stub shaft so if i have to take the flywheel off again it is NOT such a fight withit rusted on the crank snout and have to HEAT and PULLLLLL with the flywheel puller. DO NOT BEAT ON THE FLYWHEEL!!! IT WILL CRACK!!! IT WILL EXPLODE!!!! not even supposed to pry on the flywheel for the same reason... IT IS CHEAP cast metal and does not take kindly t being beat on or pried on. USE PULLER $15 and lots of propane heat and oil, heat and oil heat and oil to the flywheel/crank snout interface to loooooosen its grip of 20 years of being outside in the rain rusting/welding together.

I doubt I'll get a reply but your d239 has a CAV style pump. Mine is a VA4. The VA4 is absurdly expensive, but the CAV isn't so bad. I know the CAV doesn't have an electric cut off and would require linkage modifications. Would that CAV pump work on a 1976-1984 D239 with the VA4 pump?

I think you have a ''starter''. Is used to start M.V with dead batteries. That knob in panel is to increase voltage up to 38 or so volts. Mine its exactly like yours and made by HOL-GAR. Check your data plates in generator side, It has all the info you need.

Mine is rated as a 24 volts starter. It can be increased to 38 volts. Is used to help start vehicle with dead batteries. Military use the same configuration with different wiring so perhaps is a 1. Kw genset
