Calling everything a dulcimer is getting out of hand. What you’ve made here is plainly in the violin family-it looks a lot like a viel-with four strings (it’s allowed, but viels usually have only three). The oldest viel bodies and necks were carved out of a single block of wood. We have glues and standard sized veneers now to lighten the structure and get more sound and volume out of it. It’s fair to say that dulcimers in general are lap instruments (although many modern , electrified dulcimer-players hold it differently). They are often tuned with a drone-string which is sometimes doubled. And they are therefore seldom played with a bow.

"....a purpose-built dulcimer designed around bow playing. The purpose-designed instrument is described as resembling a hybrid between a dulcimer and a cello or viola da gamba." But yes I would agree violin family.

Thank you for this great video!. You really demystify and simplify the building and using of the Thread jig! Who is your supplier of the X-Y ''tray'' and Thread bit? At what speed did you run the Thread bit on your lathe? Thanks in advance and continue to creating innovative video.

I got the x-y vise from the "offshore" tool store Harbor freight. But any X-Y vise would do the trick. If you end up picking up a cheap one as I did, you might have to go over it and clean it up a bit. I had to spend an hour or 2 cleaning it up and removing paint from surfaces that shouldn't have been painted to get it to operate more smoothly. As far as the Thread cutting Bit, In my case it was 3/8 shank, 3/4" Diameter, 3/16" Wide 60° Double Angle Cutter that was High Speed Steel. Main thing is that it will fit into what Collets you want to use. I was running the cutter at about 1300 RPM for this project. It's really about finding a good feed and speed balance when cutting to minimize chatter. Appreciate you taking time to comment! Let me know if you have any other questions.

It's wood, tear out was expected. Given how stringy the wood was I'm surprised they looked as good as they did given they were also end grain. Its a learning experiences and for the first wooded threads I've cut I think they turned out well. They catch and thread smoothly even with the tear out and do the job they are supposed to holding the lid on.

Just curious, how long did it take you to sand those? What grit did you start at?
@Ronys2YT
@Ronys2YT 8 ай бұрын
Sanding went fairly quick, I sand while they are still on the lathe with power. I start with 80 grit, and work my way through 120, 220, and stop with 320. You can catch me sanding them just after putting in the burn marks in the video at 1:52 mark. Hope this helps!

This is marvelous as is the build. Where did you get the dimensions? What are you using for strings?
@Ronys2YT
@Ronys2YT 9 ай бұрын
I took the scale length and bridge height for a 4/4 Cello and kinda just ran with that. There weren't any "plans" per say just an Idea. I had built 2 dulcimers previously so I used the construction I used for those and mixed in what I saw more traditional cellos had. I calculated the "f holes" (sound hole) size requirements with Helmholtz Resonator formula, you can find calculators online to help with that also. Still using D'Addario's Prelude Cello Strings. Appreciate your comment!
