I know this is an older vid, but I was able to significantly decrease the hiss/noise floor by taking the CL-1 out of my chain and swapping to the Cathedral Pipes Durham MK. II inline preamp.

There is a reason why the mkh50 is on every feature film set. It is held at a distance to nearly as close as you are. This is part of the reason why the proximity you are experiencing seams greater. You are effectively several inches closer to the capsule on the 50 than you are the 416

The 50 is almost indistinguishable from the 416 if you take put the high pass filter on on the 50 to lower the bass.

The MKH 50 is one of THE VO mics. But your hear (with all good mics) the quality of the room. And you have some hard reflexions there. sorry to say that, but thats the place to improve your sound.

Are there any sound/voice distortions from 40-50cm away and 30 degrees axis on Sennheiser MKH 416?
@J_HNP Жыл бұрын
Different tools for different things. The MKH 416 is amazing for outdoor stuff, and can sound great as a VO mic (as long as you’re in a controlled, well-tuned room (Ex: a vocal booth), but will sound funky in reverberative environments like indoor spaces with bare walls. The 50 is amazing for indoor dialogue, but doesn’t sound great close to the mouth. Buy both and be confident you have most situations covered.

The fact that compression has been applied invalidates the test. The fact that you don't know how to adjust for any level differences is a really bad sign. Anyone wanting to hear these mics demonstrated properly should head on over to a channel run by someone who uses them in a professional setting kzbin.infovideos or kzbin.infovideos

@MNKStudios2 жыл бұрын
Shotgun microphones are not designed for the way it's being demonstrated here. The MKH50 is a fantastic microphone for voice over work in the studio, but doesn't sound as natural as the MKH416 which is usually placed much farther from the source and is superior for ADR work because of its natural sound, and for outdoor use, it's much better than the MKH50 because of its off-axis rejection. This is why it is the legend it has been for decades. Nice review though :)

As a voice over artist at this price point, check out the Rode N-T1 (not the N-T1A). That's a condenser and it will be more versatile for voice over work than this mic.
@astralaudio1013 жыл бұрын
Actually the EV-RE20 is another Dynamic option. It’s also a famous microphone for VO and is the Shure SM7B’s competitor in many respects.
@crosstalktech3 жыл бұрын
The RE20 is great, but for voice over I'd recommend a condenser. Unless you have an untreated room. If you really need a dynamic I would recommend the RE320 above the RE20 if you have a limited setup. The RE20 is amazing (I have one) but you need the setup to support it. The RE320 is way easier to drive, although I'd still recommend a preamp with that mic.

I'd recommend something like an electro-voice re320 instead. It's more sensitive and in my opinion has a nicer sound for spoken word. As far as room treatment goes it does not matter "as much" with a dynamic mic than with a condenser so you should be fine.

the mkh 50 doesn't sound as natural at the distances you used for the mics. The 416 needs no EQ while the 50 needs a hpf at a minimum. The 416 is the clear winner in this test at least. It is no surprise as to why the mkh 416 is a universal standard.
@anthonyfesce38385 жыл бұрын
I guess it would have been way more useful to test them in THEIR environment that is indoor-outdoor sets and not soundproof rooms. Also the mic distance is probably not a realistic one neither for film nor for interviews. Anyways thanks for the attempt.

Do you really need a Cloudlifter with the dbx 286s?
@GameAbuseStudiosGaming4 жыл бұрын
I know it's been a year since you asked this but I wanted to answer Your question anyway. I got all three the Cloudlifter CL1 the Shure sm7b and the DBX 286s. The answer is no! you don't need the Cloudlifter with the DBX as a matter of fact (at least in My case) the audio is cleaner without the cloudlifter with the gain on the dbx turned up to about +50 on the (Input) and +5 on the (Output) then going into a focusrite scarlett 2i2...Also if you own a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 make sure to update it or there will me a massive noise floor unless you drop the volume in the audio settings
@gkiss20303 жыл бұрын
@@GameAbuseStudiosGaming Hi, is the update part valid for the Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen as well? It plays along fairly nice with my SM7B, though it could have less noise (even with a dbx 286A in front of the chain), and I am thinking of getting the SE Dynamite mic activator for it.
@GameAbuseStudiosGaming3 жыл бұрын
@@gkiss2030i believe so unless it's somehow just my pc causing the noise before updating the 2i2. After checking I can confirm that the 3rd gen is actually the same model I have. So, much like most people will tell you, it's probably a good idea to update it and see if that fixes any problems. If not it could be a number of things. I reduced the noise even further simply by keeping the 2i2 off the top of the dbx. And if theres still static like noise it could be the trs or xlr cables. And If you hear a buzzing sound it's most likely a ground loop issue. If you're hyped up on coffee all the time like me you'll notice a common ground loop issue is actually making the alternating current from the wall audible... I'll stop rambling now...

You’re not wrong, for indoor anything audio, 50 reigns supreme. The 416 and short shotguns like it have issue with room reflections (even when there’s acoustic treatment). The 50 is perfect for voice over. And the bass roll off doesn’t hurt either.

Hi there! Great video! This was really helpful! I got a question, this doesn't really have much to do with this video, but I saw somebody who did a test with the shure sm7b, and he used the MOTU 828 and the MOTU 4 pre. My question is, how would you connect those to each other? Or do you even think they were connected to each other? He did a mic test with like 6 different mics or so. It sounded so crisp and clean, I'm right now thinking of getting this set up with the MOTU's myself, but I'm unsure if you need both. I hope you are able to help, thank you so much! :)

Cool you have an id14 like me :) I was thinking of getting this mic to help me do some voice overs for my videos. I live in a noisy apartment so it might be a good option for me. The nasal part has me thinking now...I think I have a bit of a nasal tone as well. That's why I like the Electro Voice RE320 and maybe even the Shure Beta 87A. At the moment my videos are being recorded with a Shure Beta 57A just cause I wanted to try out. Anyways I'm rambling. (I already have a fethead)
@crosstalktech6 жыл бұрын
FoodTechLife I'd stick to what you have right now, if you have those mics there really isn't a point of getting this one since it will probably frustrate you beyond belief compared to the other ones you have. Remember that for a 'nasal tone' the positioning of the mic is also important, if you have it pointed straight at you or maybe at a slight angle from the top down it can counter act that slightly.

@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff6 жыл бұрын
Dude. Thank you for doing this. Wow. The difference between the two is much greater than I thought. The 50 has more of a LDC character in the low mids and now I get why I've read descriptions that describe it as having far less self-noise and sounding more muscular. In the context of VO, I think I would absolutely prefer the MKH-50's sound in a narration where it is the sole audio element, or laid back against an ambient background like two people having a conversation in an office, at home, the beach, etc... For a soft voice or for a quiet/somber read, I can see the 50 really doing a great job. If I had to pick one to record a podcast, etc... it would be the 50. That kinda ugly brightness of the 416 is pretty much what allows it to cut through a busy track which is why it's such a VO standard. Just given what I've heard here, for a car spot or any commercial where the client was laying the voice over background music, it would be the 416, but I can definitely see some good reasons to add a MKH-50 to my toolbox at some point in the not too distant future. Again, thank you again for taking the time to shoot them out against each other. Great job!
@JackDanielVO2 жыл бұрын
I voice TV promo and movie trailers, and for several years I used the 416 because... Well, everybody else used it. Then a friend let me do a shoot-out in his outstanding studio in Nashville, and the 416 wasn't even in the top 5. I get why people use it--it has a presence and a super-shiny high end that makes things pop, especially for deep voices. But it also is a bit lifeless and dull compared to, say, a TLM-103 or the MKH-50. Part of the reason, I think, is the vocal thinning it adds, possibly due to the compressing effect of its pencil construction. At any rate, my 416 now sits in my mic closet. The VO great and mic expert, Cory Burton, has written about the 416's defects as a VO mic, and it took me a while to understand what he was talking about. All this said, the 416 is unlikely to go away any time soon, and it's hard to walk into a studio in LA and *not* find a 416 hung up. It'll get the job done, and no one is going to complain if you use it. But I agree with you that the brightness comes off as cheap compared with larger diaphragms.
