Why was it ‘only available in Carlisle’? I guess the delivery system was so advanced it would have blown our minds if everyone could get hold of it. I don’t remember long queues of ‘pilgrims’ making their way to Carlisle, but then my memories of that time are rather sketchy.

Hi Julia, I have also been uploading episode of Who Dares Wins for the past few weeks on my channel www.youtube.com/@billbobmatthews. I read in the description though that you only have this episode from series 1. I have all the rest of series 1, and I think it's only fair that I should copies and send them to you, given that you're a star of the show! I have been uploading one episode every Sunday on the 40th anniversary of its first broadcast, and got to Ep 6 yesterday. We have a mutual connection in Rory McGrath, who I worked with for many years on They Think It's All Over (both radio and TV versions). The episodes are VHS originals which I have transferred to DVD, so very easy to copy. Please let me know by what method I can get these to you. Thanks. Bill

Hi Bill - that's amazing! Thank you so much, I would love to have the rest of series 1 as part of my archive. I have eps 5-8 of series 2, all of series 3 and eps 4-6 of series 4 - It would be fabulous to be able to complete the collection one day. I'm a bit of a technophobe and have to admit to my husband helping me edit and upload vids. What's the best way to share them? Do you have them as digital files? I saw Rory recently when I was touring Drop the Dead Donkey to Cambridge and he was on fine form. Thanks again 😀

@@julia_hills I was a huge fan of Who Dares Wins's Radio 4 precursor, Injury Time, so when WDW started I knew it would be my sense of humour (long before I started working with Rory). As a result, I recorded all episodes of the four series, with the odd small bit missing here and there. I will be happy to help you complete the collection. I have Eps 2-6 of S1 as edited MP4 files. I'm not a technophile myself, so I'm not sure of the best way to share these online. Perhaps your husband will know. I'll be editing Eps 7 and 8 into edited MP4s for uploading on the next two Sundays. Your missing episodes from the other series I can copy on to DVD and send to you. We'll work it out somehow!

An interesting time capsule here. Some of it works, some of it doesn't, but there was enough here that made the ten-year-old me keep coming back for more. I've mentioned the unpredictability of studio audiences before, but it does make a nice change to hear people who only laugh when they want to, rather than feeling obliged to greet every line with a nervous giggle. There are quite a few episodes of the first series of Monty Python's Flying Circus where the audience reactions are either muted or non-existent. I used to think this was just a case of 'early episode weirdness,' but I bought that boxed set of every episode of The Goodies a couple of years ago, and the third series is notably light on audience laughter for some reason. It's not as if the scripts are poor, or the series didn't have a large and very vocal fanbase by then (a second series episode won the Silver Rose of Montreux!), so it's a bit baffling. Similarly, the first episode of Spitting Image has a laugh track and it's very distracting. Presumably the powers that be agreed, because the subsequent episodes were audience-free.
@julia_hills
@julia_hills 13 күн бұрын
yes it's a real mixed bag but you're right it is refreshing to let sketches and 'bits' fail or succeed on their own merit - 2point4 was also filmed in front of a live audience and I always loved that sense of a shared experience and the immediate feedback
