Happy new year! This is one of the first tunes I learned, so it came back to my fingers pretty quickly. When you got up to tempo, though, I put down the flute and picked up my Generation. Im still working through grip issues on the flute. Thanks so much!

I remember this tune as a 'dependable' and 'solid favorite' at our sessiuns back in the early 2000's here in the Twin Cities. It's nice to know that it is still a favorite and probably will be in the coming years. There is something quite reassuring about traditional tunes and I'm glad to hear this one again.
@ShannonHeatonMusic3 күн бұрын
yes, dependable and solid. And I appreciate taking a moment to share some of the old hits, to remind ME of some of these tunes (that I don't often think to start up...)
@douglascole57293 күн бұрын
@@ShannonHeatonMusic Yes. It is cool to learn 'trendy' tunes. But the tunes like Blackthorn Stick, remind us of the tradition and why we are here.

Popping in to say thanks! And also would love that tutorial for voicings in the key of F in a drop D tuning. I play with an uillean piper who recently got a C set! I have some ideas but I would love to see yours as well
@ShannonHeatonMusic19 күн бұрын
Nice idea, and great that you get to play with low pipes. We'll see what Matt has to say. I wonder if it will involve capo 3...
@mattguitarheaton17 күн бұрын
I'll try to make one. Though honestly if someone is playing a C set or B flat whistle or something, I often just look for a good capo spot. Drop D capo obviously can't be beaten for F!
@TheMCflint7 күн бұрын
@@mattguitarheaton capo 3 drop d sounds great! The only struggle is if we play a G tune in a set with an F or a C tune. Though admittedly G tunes on the C pipes aren’t as common so it could be as simple as laying out for the first round of the G tune while I remove the capo
@mattguitarheaton7 күн бұрын
@@TheMCflintyou could capo 5, play the F one in C shapes. Or….tune the whole guitar down a step! If the piper is committed to the low set.

Hi Shannon, thanks for sharing this with us. I understand the meaning of A part and B part, however, what exactly is a 'phrase'? Are there always 4 phrases in the A part for example? Or is it up to the listener to determine how many phrases there are? I'm trying to get better at learning tunes by ear per your recommendation, but still "get lost in the tune" often :)
@ShannonHeatonMusic20 күн бұрын
Well, we all learn and hear things differently. My idea is to break each part (A part, B part) into four digestible sections--two-bar 'phrases.' Almost ALL Irish tunes are symmetrical. There are just a few 'crooked' tunes with more or fewer than eight bars. So learning two bars AKA measures at a time feels manageable.
