Ooooh yeeaaahh….often is the time that Hollywood is more concerned with the “entertainment” aspect of a picture rather than its “realism.” Hope you enjoyed the presentation!! (*tips fedora*).

Really like W Bendix in this. He can get very “mannered” as they say in acting; playing an exaggerated version of himself over and over. But knowing Hathaway, and how strong a director he was of male characters, he probably took hold of Bendix and helped him cut back on the extra bits. Everyone’s acting here is so clean. Just enough for each of them and no more. I guess that’s what makes noir. Lovely film.

@fullmoonmatinee4 сағат бұрын
Yep - I do not monetize the channel, and I do not put ads in the movies. There are occasional times when there might still be a copyright holder on some element of the movie (say, the musical score) and they have a right to put ads in. But when that happens, it’s THEM putting in the ads - NOT ME.

Great movie. But tricky to follow the murder plan. Lots of other ways to dispose of Bannister. Over board? But the locations, music and acting were terrific.
@fullmoonmatinee12 сағат бұрын
Oh, I shall agree. But the only thing I didn't like about the acting was that Welles' phony Irish accent wasn't even necessary for the storyline anyway. And there were a few times when he would start to "drift" out of it, and then had to "drift" back in. But overall, a great movie. Glad you enjoyed!! (*tips fedora*).

As always thanks for the movie I enjoyed it 50:46 so I'm watching Gunsmoke for the first time I didn't know anything about the show except its a well known old western show and my dad likes it I'm on season 2 episode like 8 or 9 (watched it a week ago) and I didn't even recognize him until you said something😅
@fullmoonmatineeКүн бұрын
Oh, I get ya. I watched a ton of “Gunsmoke” when I was a kid (I even remember when it was still in “prime time”). And of course, with after school reruns. But the after school reruns only ever showed the later seasons, when the series had transitioned to color and Ken Curtis took over the deputy role as Festus. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the earlier seasons with Dennis Weaver in the role.

It has a really unique feel, different from the classic noirs of the 40's and 50's. All the bit parts are quirky and memorable, it reminds me of Tarantino in the weird little side conversations that don't really progress the plot but just give the actors and writers a chance to shine. Check out this drunk girl, she is only in the movie for 4 minutes but so entertaining. 33:22 "You gonna help me or just stand there decorating the premises?"

Yeah, it kinda was. And she did such a fantastic job with it too. She could easily have done more of these types of movies...but just didn't. I don't know if it was because she was typecast into comedies & musicals, or if she just preferred those kinds of movies out of her own personal choice.

I do love the cars from this era. And how they looked back then. Especially the 1947 Ford Super deluxe cars as they have a really slick and streamlined appearance. And Patricia Knight really looked beautiful in this movie. I bet a blonde girl like her would turn a lot of heads back in those days. Much to the jealously of the wives back then lol.
@fullmoonmatinee4 күн бұрын
Oh, I'm definitely with ya on the cars back then. And you're certainly right on the points you mentioned about Patricia Knight. So then the question becomes: with her looks, why didn't she have a more successful career (even without Wilde)? My personal opinion is that during this era, there were just SO MANY "blonde bombshells" for Hollywood to choose from!! It's exactly like you said: sure, she could walk down the street and turn heads in YOUR hometown. But in Hollywood? "Hot blondes" were a dime-a-dozen back then! Let's look at a short list: Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Carol Ohmart, Anita Ekberg, Virginia Mayo, Joan Blondell, Mamie Van Doren, Cleo Moore, Vera Ralston, Dorothy Provine, Diana Dors, Peggie Castle, Carole Landis, Betty Grable, Lana Turner, Joi Lansing, Ann Francis, Kim Novak, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Barbara Eden, Jeanne Carmen, etc., etc., etc. See what I'm getting at? The competition was STILL fierce!
@camillejohnson70354 күн бұрын
Bela L. at least had a legacy, and even later in his movie life he had the small parts that he played a mute. So no lines were spoken at all. His career worked out far better than most. It might not have been the legacy he wanted, but we still remember his name.
@fullmoonmatinee4 күн бұрын
These ARE excellent points. After all, how many aspiring actors never even made it to the point that he did?! True dat!!

Another fantastic noir and a very underrated and forgotten about film. Great plot, great lines, strong cast; everything you need for a great film. Lucille Ball is very good and shows that she was very good at serious acting and should have done more I think. Clifton Webb and William Bendix are great as per usual and Mark Stevens surprised me having never seen him before and he a proper tough private eye. Another thing I noticed when I watched it for the first time last year was the sheer number of match strikes of various objects such as walls, desks and Stevens also strikes one off the sole of his shoe. It might be the film with the most match strikes not off a matchbox I've seen. A great film and great presentation Detective.
@fullmoonmatinee4 күн бұрын
Yes, I think Ball did a great acting job with her more serious roles in this picture and in “Lured.” So I’m not sure if her typecast into comedy and musicals was her own choice - or something she was kinda forced into. And you’re right about all the “match strikes” on surfaces other than a matchbox. I hadn’t thought of that until you mentioned it! The only thing I can think as to why they did it so much is…let’s face it, it IS “visually cool.”
@Menschenfreund5354 күн бұрын
Another outstanding film! Thanks, Detective! Been quite a while since I´ve seen this, wonderful print. That ad in the paper for the Cathcart Gallery event that was by invitation only does seem strange. All I can think of is that Henry Hathaway wanted to remind people about what they had previously heard, as well as to ensure that they be aware how snobbish Cathcart was. It could also have been used to make people who read it want to come to such a supposedly prestigous gallery during normal hours, also a snobbish move. I loved the reference to William Powell and the Thin Man series. He and Myrna Loy were fantastic together, two of my favs.
@fullmoonmatinee4 күн бұрын
Hmmm… I didn’t think about those aspects about the gallery ad. But yeah, I just thought it was strange. I was thinking that if it’s “By Invitation Only,” then just mail the invitations and forego the expense of buying a newspaper ad (of which most of the public reading it wouldn’t be able to attend)!!

Hey there. I know I'm late to this party. This was really great. I do wonder if this movie had an influence in someway to the 1980's Movie called the same title. Things sure got pretty intense with jefty going crazy at toward the end. Ida Lupino really played Lilly well. She had a really sweet voice in this. Like those 1940's sultry voices that women in some of the movies had back then. And it's fun seeing Cornel Wilde in this too as I saw the other movie with him in it from 1955.

Humphrey Bogart was one of the Best. I've seen every movie he's been in. Thank you for showing this Detective, was definitely one of his good ones. I think my favorite of his is Casablanca & The Big Sleep with Lovely Lauren starring with him. " Do you have a copy of the third edition of Ben Hur from 1860 ?" In those glasses 🤓. Or "Your Cute" What a Great Movie but you have to watch it 3 or 4 times to understand it.... Thank You so much for the info on "Malabar State Park" We are always looking for places to visit, it's in my book of future trips !!!! I want to stand in the place they got married How Cool !! Well I definitely thank you for all the kind words! Yeah, I'd have to say that my favorite Bogey movie is Casablanca, mostly because Mrs. Detective and I have seen it a few times on a big screen, in a darkened auditorium, at the fully restored Ohio Theatre in downtown Columbus. It was like we were seeing it in the EXACT SAME WAY people went to see it in 1942! But as I said in the presentation, if you go to Malabar Farm (now in the Ohio State Park system), pay very close attention to the directions. It's very easy to get lost trying to find it. Glad you enjoyed the presentation!! (*tips fedora*).

@fullmoonmatinee I would Love to see some of these movies on the Big Screen, saw that they are having the Noir Movie Theater Showings,Would Love to attend that . The closest one to us is in Chicago and we try to stay away from there right now,way to much craziness going on in the city right now and I doubt by October it will get any better. We will have to wait and see. I notice there isn't a theater to close to you either that's showing them. Its a shame, we use to go downtown and up the river in the summer on our boat all the time. Maybe we will road trip to a different one 🤔 who knows?

Kathleen - "I've never been followed before." Brad - "That's a terrible reflection on American manhood." Had you not explained about the stockings during wartime, I would have just thought that Brad asking her what size she wore so he could get her new ones was just a sexy line.
@fullmoonmatinee5 күн бұрын
Yeah, that was a good little "one-liner exchange" between Kathleen and Brad! But the wartime shortage of consumer goods (i.e., women's nylon stockings) was a "for real" deal. Women would do ANYTHING to get their hands on them during the war.

It's a funny thing -- I liked the storyline of the picture, but I didn't really care for the music. It was certainly unusual, and that's why I made a point to mention it in the presentation.
