I was antler shed hunting and had a six pack of budweiser. When I got to a point I didn't recognize I started marking my path. Someone came behind me and took 2 cans and I didn't realize it. It threw me off path on my way back bad enough that I got to a spot I could finally recognize. I marched 2 miles back up the hill to retrieve my other 2 cans. I got back to the park with 1 antler and 4 cans. One of my friends picked me up as I was hitchhiking back to town. He found my 2 beer cans and apparently an antler right by 1 of my cans. Long story long...we both had a laugh and had a beer at the bar. He did chastise me for my marker cans. But laughed at my tenacity to trek where I haven't been, while drinking beers. 😅

That’s a great story and memory! If this was in the back country I could honestly understand it. But this was in a relatively small state park along a paved trail.

In my neighborhood, people do that for the can lady. She collects cans every morning. Idk why someone would do this in the woods. Maybe to mark their path to not get lost? Idk
@RussellVineyard22 күн бұрын
While this is in the woods, it’s actually in a small state park along a paved trail. Even going off the paved trail would be hard to get lost as about 10 maybe 20 yards away is a river. On the other side is a frisbee golf course and the parking lot.
@sadebaby507220 күн бұрын
@@RussellVineyard wow! That’s crazy because in an open space like that, I’m pretty sure there’s a garbage can around. That’s pure laziness. People like that think they’re doing the public cleaners a favor by putting it on a tree instead of the ground so they don’t have to bend down to pick it up when they could’ve crushed it and tossed it in a bin.

@jessicakershner562822 күн бұрын
I was told people will do that to remind them to get it on the way out. If they are hiking in and then turning back, they'll leave it so they don't have to carey it around. Then get it off the tree on the way back to the car.
@RussellVineyard22 күн бұрын
I kind of get this. But it's a 12 ounce coke can. It actually weighs less once you've consumed it. And this is a heavily used paved trail. The furthest you can walk on this trail (provided you don't do multiple laps), is about 4 miles. I get what you're saying and I get that people will do this. I'm just not sure I understand why.
@chrisdelamain267322 күн бұрын
It’s a trail marker. City slickers dying for content.
@RussellVineyard22 күн бұрын
I'm legitimately asking because I don't quite understand. I'm along a heavily used paved trail. One of the most popular locations in Oregon's Willamette Valley. To the east of where I'm standing in this video, is a parking lot. To the west of where I'm standing is the Willamette River. The heavily used paved trail goes north to south. Between the can and the river is about 10 yards of bushes and heavy undergrowth before dropping straight down into the river. If they're marking a trail, what trail and where does it go? I can get behind someone marking a location of something hidden. But since this is a heavily used area, it seems like a dumb spot to mark something hidden because everyone who walks by will see it.

In Germany you get some money back for them, so people leave them next too the garbage can or next to benches for the homeless to collect
@RussellVineyard22 күн бұрын
People can return them for money in the US also. However, this was nowhere near a trash can. It was on a popular paved trail at a state park fairly deep in the forest.

Could be a marker where the entered or exited the woods - maybe? I’ve don’t that before, not as blatantly though.
@RussellVineyard22 күн бұрын
I can get behind this. But it's in a heavily used area of the state park. The rangers patrol it several times a day. If they didn't remove it, someone walking by, like me, probably will. Seems like a dumb idea for this specific area.

@yvonnelauhaff392722 күн бұрын
No - the worst are the ones who don’t do anything at all. At least if I step in it, it’s IN A BAG, easily capable of throwing it away myself… and I do when I see it. I’m trying to make up for the handful of times I know I’ve cleaned it up leaving the bag to pick up on my return and either not coming back the same way or totally forgetting.
