I was about to give up when I found your video! Took it apart just as you described and cleaned out the orifice. Reassembled and it lit on the first try. Thank you very much.

Wow!! I just turned on the pilot 🎉. I accidentally turned off gas while shutting off water valve. I was scared when the hot water stopped. Watched couple of videos. But, Thanks a ton. Your video boosted my confidence and I went ahead and turned on the gas pilot 😊

Thanx for the video, my water heater had the same problem, replaced it & now it's working like a charm, it's a very easy fix, take your time & double-check everything especially the main gas line was turned off as well the master control thermostat, put everything back in reverse order & don't over-tighten anything...just hand tight plus 1/4 turn

Brother thank you because I'm having that issue to where I'm searching for these videos but they're all showing how their pilots work so you're the first person I came across that I'm having the same issue with where the pilot is not working at all so much love for making this video for people who don't know what the hell they're doing like myself

Incredibly helpful. Thank you. This problem has been sitting with me for over 3 months , it’s now middle of winter down under and so glad to have bumped into your walk through. I’m sure it has saved me hundreds of dollars in service people coming out and giving me the run around

This was really useful. I had a similar problem, but when I tried to remove the pilot from the pilot orifice the act of twisting the nut also twisted the soft metal gas tubing!!! 😢 I ended up replacing the pilot assembly part SP20127 and all is well!! Much thanks to this "to the point" video!!!!

I found your video informative and helpful, until you added the cliche pitch about a life of happiness when your wifey is happy. You are doing all the work in this video to help the YT community which has nothing to do with your wifey. Sounds simpish to bring her up. Happier life is doing the right things for your family and helping your community not being a servant to a roast beef sandwich between a ♀️ legs.

I had a problem mine for nearly two years and the burner came on for 5 seconds and the whole thing would go off. It's a 3 year old water heater. These don't work like the old ones do. So I had to clean out the mice nest and it works now. When it first did this and lit it there was an explosion in the chamber. I thought it was ruined. It does ok now. It was getting enough ventilation.

for future people attempting this- Don't operate that appliance shut-off valve. Those older ones tend to create leaks when operated. IF operable. The controls (box) have valves for the pilot/main burner. Check the connections you make between the controls and the main burner+pilot tubing when first operating. could be leaking. a simple soapy water solution sprayed/brushed on the connections works. also, more important than gas leaks is carbon monoxide. You should check for proper drafting when lighting a water heater. Easy enough, at the top of the water heater, where the draft diverter is, and the little gap, it should be sucking up air, not blowing products of combustion out. You can test it with a match/smoke/a spider web, or just by feel. Technically you're supposed to replace the gasket when taking that faceplate off the water heater.... at least screw the screws back in. This is a FVIR (flammable vapor ignition resistant) water heater. the design is that a flame CANNOT travel from inside the combustion chamber, out around the base. (or vice-versa.) aka it cant set off a low-hanging "puddle" of propane/gasoline/paint thinner etc fumes. 4 screw holes+ a bad seal defeat that design, and can affect flame characteristics/burner operation. -gasman for a utility.

Edit: My stupid WH would not light, all I did was pull out the burner, rotate the thermopile 180 degrees (these get fouled by black soot very easily) stuck it back in and it fired up the first time ;)Finally a video, which explains why the pilot, may not, light...everybody defaults to the stupid thermocoupler. Thanks for the video, I'm going to verify my pilot gas line is not clogged, because it appears this is the first step in getting a flame going. 👍

THANK YOU. This worked for me too. Even after I had a plumber over who heated up the thermocouple with his torch and didnt’ get it to work and declared this water heater dead. In my case the heater had been on Vacation setting for about a month and there was just a little bit of water in the pilot end, apparently enough to clog the orifice.

Thanks a million!! I had to get a replacement picot lighter ignition switch for like 15$, I kept pushing my old one and no spark. Still had to wiggle the wire, but sooooo much cheaper than repairman. Would of been worth it if fix was harder for me, but overall, thanks😁
