It’s sad seeing Ovett a shadow of his former self. He was washed up here and should have retired in 1986 after his 5000m commonwealth title. He aged so fast and peaked quickly as a youth.

Mottram in the mid-2000s was one of my favorite runners. Around this same time he came to the US and beat a bunch of our best guys in a 2-mile and in the interview on TV he said something like “it all comes down to the size of your balls.” I was a college runner then and we all loved him after that line. What a legend.

I did this parkrun for the first time at the weekend and something people should know is that its a very hilly course. The finish is up a steep hill but even before that, theres a climb that seems to go on and on. Just in case anyone is after a fast time, I dont think this is the course for that. I'll give a quick course description if you're planning on doing this for the first time: Start off on a flat section, at the far side of the castle, then turn right, theres an incline for a bit, but then you go downhill. At this point you turn right and you're going uphill for a stretch, then downhill to the bottom of the park. This section then is flat enough, you then enter the woods, go up and incline, then turn left and up a hill and repeat the loop you just ran. So you do 2 x loops of this part. Then when you come to the point where you wouldve gone downhill as if you were doing another loop, instead you turn right and head up the hill to the finish. This is fairly steep and goes on for about 400m.

Were you 1st home Eoin? What time did you do for it?
@eoinMB39497 ай бұрын
@@chriskeeling1052 The time was over a minute slower than what Id usually run for a parkrun!! That shows that its a tough enough course.

Thanks you so very much for posting - I have almost no photos or video from those days , so this is a gift-- it was amazing to see that 800m -- I remember being so overawed to be in the same race as Marcus O'Sullivan. Great memories!

It's sad to watch a once dominant runner like Ovett become a pale shadow of his former self. In his prime he would have won this by miles easing down. I wonder what happened to him. It isn't age as Scott was the same age. I guess some athletes just have a shorter shelf life than others. Cram was washed up by 1987 in terms of Major Championships and he only had 4 years at his best level! 83, 84, 85 and 86. Cruz also only had a fleeting period at the top.
