No Bandstand for Elton…he wanted Soul Train. In 74/75 he charted twice on the soul charts ( this and Bennie and the Jets)- so he legitimately earned his stripes to perform on the Train…no lip syncing either. Bowie and his funky Fame also warranted Don Cornelius opening the stage to another white Brit icon..

More likely that rock singers weren't invited because their songs didn't fit on the show. Philadelphia Freedom is an R&B song as are Bennie and the Jets and some other Elton songs so he was a good fit for Soul Train His personal style was also a better fit compared to the grungy jeans and tees of most rock artists at the time.
