I already know that games running on UE 5 are mostly going to be unoptimized as hell and I actively avoid such games(Not because I have garbage rig, I can confidently say I'm on the higher end one), but watching these videos, holy sht I'm more enlightened. It doesn't take a game developer to notice these atrocities, an observant eye is all you need.

Games are unoptimized as shit and rely too much on frame gen and dlss to get to the target fps while your cpu and gpu are screaming at 100% usage. Not to mention those unecessary large sizes.

I think the pushback this channel receives is just a result of the fairly aggressive tone of the videos. People automatically switch off when they feel like their viewpoint is being challenged, I think it would be much more effective if the facts were just stated simply

Graphics bloat finally caught up with hardware optimization and now devs have to relearn how to optimize the software. Oh, and how to not be a dickhead when they're criticized for poor optimization.

Gaming market is dead. We turned it into an actual business outside the actual game and hardware to play the game. Self-sabotage at its finest. What physical and real world solutions came from this? Non. So the price will continue to climb and results will continue to get worse. Cause there's no physical boundary to stop them, no legal action to take cause no service was rendered.

I pretty much withdrawn myself from playing UE games at this point. It's just horrible experience despite having top hardware available on the consumer market. I guess I did get 4090 to play Factorio and 10 year old games afterall 😂

Solution for lumen? Kill it. Replacing it with prebaked lights. Lumen is good for people that do not want to wait for lights compiling time. I pointed out a lot of the same problems this guy pointed out. The answer from the dev community? "If you don't like how unreal is done then write your own engine". I don't have the money for doing that, so how I ended up using unreal engine at the end? I re-wrote from the scratch in c++ the 80% of the things. Mass-Overriding any kind of bs that killed performance. Even the cursed order of basic elements spawn: Game mode, game instance, player controller. How things were managed and done were chaotic. Faulty blueprints which killed A LOT of performance. I mean... is this the best support someone can get when pointing out at a problem? Come on...

CPU isn't matter because UE5 is more GPU bound. The way he Tripled FPS on 4K Resolution using a mere RTX 3060 12GB without any upscaling is more towards Code Optimization for GPU

I'm not much of a gamer, and nevermind most new games, but i dp play witcher 3 and was horrified when I switched the AA to TAAU, it looked absolutely dreadful, like I just took off my glasses coming from FXAA, which is already literally a blur filter. I decided just to turn AA off and choose a texture and geometry detail level that balances the level of aliasing. Hair is still questionable, though. High settings with no AA looks worse, and with TAA you probably wouldn't have enough resolution to even see the difference. Though on a technicality, I think anti aliasing REQUIRES blur to function, which can be done with bilinear or trilinear or Lantzov etc downsampling. Though, motion blurring, which is essentially TAA, with a slight bonus when you stand still due to jitter. Non temporal AI upscale from native like used for photo image upscaling, then downscaled would do a decent job. But I think ultimately, the way to beat aliasing is to make it too small to notice. Cameras forgo AA filters above around 36 megapixels, usually. Same as DCI 8K, regular 8k is 33mp. Obviously dont have the power for that, but if you can render 4k without antialiasing itll be pretty good already, same performance as 4x SSAA, which is the only true good AA method.

i just subbed and liked the video. but when the guy implied that godot and other engines are a waste, i retracted it back. realistic is not equal to better games. art style matters more. this is what many devs dont understand. it doesnt matter if it's a grpahically impressive, highly optimize render of dogshit. it's still shit. i'd take a pixelated, or hand drawn gold over that. why use UE on games that does not use the majority of UE features. it's better to use unity or godot on those.

bloated budget and bloated workteams is main issue in corpos. the longer the game takes to make the less profit they would get and optimizations would take "too much" time and cause most corpos do it its getting extremely competive for numbers. And cause that competivenes it has slowly little by little turned to badly optimized mess that depends on highend hardware to overcome dev teams shortcoming of not giving a damn cause "its just job for us". I started to support more indie devs (and their dreams and visions) cause of this too. Seen games with just 2-4people team make frikin brilliant games that run and feel absolutely better than most triple A games in 2024

So heres a thing I actually want to ask you guys: As someone who has used a few engines, but mainly unreal (but not anymore), as an artist in production (no nanite). What are your thoughts on the ideas behind some of this tech, ie, getting the amount of visuals fidelity that Nanite offer, the realtime GI without baking that Lumen claims to offer and the idea behind megalights of multiple shadowcasting light sources being cheaper? Sure we can optimize, manually LOD, and arrange for each light, mesh and scenario to be bespokely perfected for the context its viewed in, but time is money, and the iterative process of design itself can halt a lot of art production. Ideally I'd love to have each lightsource cast shadows, has its light bounces around the environment and have the meshes it affects be high fidelity and hold up to closeups. I'd prefer to not butcher my own work, introduce repetition or have to use a majority of the allotted art time to nothing but optimization, only to have that part of the art switched by design. So is there any scenario where you see any of this tech being viable out of the box? Or will unreal always be a beast you first tame, then take apart, and rebuild?

Hello! Can anyone explain why the max area triangle mesh is the best? I know it shows that it gets the best fps but why? Also how do we achieve that when modeling? I just tested it out on a cylinder and when I tried to smooth it (blender subdivision modifier) it made a really weird shape and not a smooth subdivision. The fan shape made looked good after a subdivision. But also I always thought we should avoid making triangles for texturing reasons. Is the triangles here what UE makes it? Or is the Max Area topology something someone makes manually? I'm honestly just kind of confused with the triangle stuff but I would love to learn. I just don't know how I can achieve that best topology shown (I'm on the floor part 3 minutes into the video) for optimization

My only complaint is your vision for funding partially applying to developing AI-related tools. I'm sure you understand how much of a misnomer and buzzword "AI" is. For something like LODs, speculative template generation with an expectation that finishing touches will be required sounds perfectly fine. But I would hope that anything "AI" is not a big part, and definitely not a fundamental part, of what you plan to spend funding on.

Someone asked me why older games (20+ years) seemed to have way better performance than newer games, and as someone with limited game dev experience, my best guess was that developers have simply gotten lazy. Back in the day, you *had* to care about optimization. We had nowhere near the RAM and storage capacity as we do today, so every single thing had to be optimized to the max with tons of clever tricks. Nowadays, nobody bats an eye if your game is chugging RAM and takes up 150+ GB of storage. Games are quickly thrown together and rely on automated tools that just cut corners and rarely actually solve the root issues at hand.

Geez, seems people don’t like being confronted with the reality they created themselves and will now defend until the day they die because they refuse to admit when they’re wrong on an issue. Of course, they can only go with insults and “but you’re not a game dev are you? so you don’t know anything but buzzwords!” Devs need to face it: they’re putting out shite games with shite quality. Why they want laziness to become the industry standard and being uneducated on matters where they could greatly improve things for all, including themselves in terms of profit, is beyond me … No, instead, they just want asspats for the bare minimum anymore because of such mentalities being: “oooooo but look at the pores on their skin! so realistic! doesn’t that make you want to buy the game? consume the slop and say it’s pretty, don’t look at performance! look at the REALISM! stop being a poor and just buy new PC parts, because it does fine for us, so it’s a you issue. oh, a 4090 is having issues with our game, also? that’s their problem, they’re doing something wrong then.” It’s become so rampant to where even consumers are rehashing this nonsense and running defense for them to try and justify their purchase instead of calling out the issues for what it is: devs being lazy and not taking the time to optimize the things they’re implementing into their games properly - just slapping upscaling on it all and calling it a day as forcing it to be the standard. It’s gotta’ go, and I’m glad more are speaking up and showing how they’re totally in the wrong.

I'm probably older than you, when I stumbled upon one of your videos, I was imediatly impressed, discussions that me and my friends have constantly dived into but without proper rehersal or clear and concrete evedince are similar to what you have for topics here on this channel, but what was obviously contrasting was how you represent it in such a convencing way, it should no longer be a debate, after all moding comunities exist to fix what bad developers ignore. The way you speak is very well articulated and being young shouldn't be a reason to discredit someone. if you are interested, I would like to reach out to you as i'm interested in game dev and currently in CS and would love to learn what I can form you.
