Thanks Nicola, these are great ideas! I'm a piano teacher of 15yr, here's how I structure my lessons: (currently in MyMusicStaff but Vivid is a great option for this format!!) I use the 'lesson notes' feature of MyMusicStaff to send assignments. (Vivid Practice or a shared Google Doc or email thread would work fine also.) The lesson notes have bold headers, such as Technique & Rote, Reading, Sightreading, Theory, Listening. (Below the main assignment I usually include a 'Done' list where I copy over their recently completed pieces, and maybe 'Up Next' or 'Future' for requests that are just out of reach.) Under each header is their assignment in each category, with any tutorial videos, listening material, or backing tracks either hyperlinked or attached. Each week the assignment automatically copies over, so I see what they were meant to work on. We make our way through the list: passing off assignments, adding focus notes (indented and italicized), or adding new pieces as needed. I like to mix up the order to keep things fresh, and start with either technique or time sensitive assignments (holiday or performance pieces) but if we don't get to something important (maybe an unexpectedly in-depth theory question that arises in the last 5 minutes) I'll mark it with 'start here first next time' or similar. Then I tick the box for MyMusicStaff to email them a copy (again you can do the equivalent in your chosen system) and we're done!

Do you have a particular pattern you use for your lessons, like 1. Warm up Exercises, 2. Songs from the book 3. Composition etc? And what software do you use for lesson assignments?
@ColourfulKeys8 күн бұрын
I use Vivid Practice for assignments - full disclosure that’s an app I developed myself. You can get a free account if you want to try it at vividpractice.com As for lesson routine, I prefer not to start with one particular thing. I like to mix it up!

but they would have the same speed and rhythm if you use the same notes, the bars would just shift in different positions, they then would sound the same except for the stresses. i say this because as a beginner, i am still confused after watching the video since that means you can achieve the same thing with just using a single time signature, if you dont care about the stresses
@ColourfulKeys8 күн бұрын
“Stresses” or emphasis, is basically the whole reason for time signatures :)

Do you even know how to play the piano? I watch dozens of piano channels, every teacher always at the piano dazzling viewers with their pro level skills as they teach or give advice. You, are rarely sitting at the piano and when you are you play like a beginner on her first day of lessons. That's my observation as a pro-level player.
@ColourfulKeys15 күн бұрын
That’s because I’m here to talk about teaching. Me playing some piece is not going to help teachers improve their teaching.

But instead of saying I would not start that way, shouldn't a teacher be able to adapt to the type of student and what kind of teaching fits them. there is not just your way.
@ColourfulKeys23 күн бұрын
Seems like you might be new here! Most of what I talk about on this channel is about adapting to students and putting them first. This turn of phrase really just means “this is not a good way to start” but because I’m Irish, I need to cushion it and make it more polite….even though I’m criticising a non-human. :)

I think piano teachers are fine for now....SimplyPiano and Flowkey are popular but only with people who are not serious about piano. I'm more worried about arts and creative things in general. Soon you won't be able to tell if a photo/video is real. In pop songs, AI can write the entire song and can 'sample' your voice and sing in your voice in a way that you can't. People will start releasing their 'own' music which they didn't write, play or sing and will become successful. Performing live isn't an issue anymore, that's all fake too. It just takes away motivation from the new generation, what's the point of learning graphic design, what's the point of learning composition or music theory if AI can do it in seconds and you can claim it yours. Sad world we live in.
@MichaelRighi27 күн бұрын
@@pianotips2623 I agree with a lot of what you said about AI, but I’m going to push back on your criticism of SimplyPiano and Flowkey. These apps are reducing the barriers to entry to learning how to play piano. Many people (including me) start out with one of these apps and then graduate to real-life instruction once they get into it more. I think they’re increasing the demand for piano instruction by getting more people hooked on learning how to play.
@theonlyonimod25 күн бұрын
Yeah, but same was said about paining vs graphical design when the computers started
@ColourfulKeys23 күн бұрын
Well I think there are many reasons may be for folks choosing an app, some are valid and some are misguided. But not all mean they are not “serious”. However, I agree with you about the arts in general. We need regulation on this. AI can only make things because of its source material (ie a human once made a thing!) so if we let it run rampant, humans won’t make things and everything will be derived from pre-AI art. Plus, the writers and artists of the source material were not compensated for this labour that AI is pillaging.
@MichaelRighi28 күн бұрын
ChatGPT has been a nice complement to my piano lessons. I have conversations with it to learn more about music theory and also how pianos work, and it’s been very helpful. Questions I’ve asked include, “Why is middle C on pianos the frequency that it is?”, “Is there something intrinsically satisfying about the notes used in Western Music or do they just sound good because that’s what I’m used to hearing?“, “Mechanically, how does a Sostenuto pedal work?” At the end of a conversation I ask it to provide me with sources from the web so I can learn more, and also so that I can verify it wasn’t lying to me about anything it said. 😄

I totally have that exact student that you're describing. His parents are insisting that he take piano. He used to like it, but now he'd rather spend all his free time with soccer. We've already had the "leveling" talk. And I've introduced some extra pieces (outside of the "normal" repertoire) for him to learn... BUT!, I think your idea of giving him a BUNCH of different things to listen to and choose from, as a new genre entirely, for him to learn from sounds really hopeful. Do you have lists of "method-type" books from different genres on your site? I could definitely use some help in that area.

I feel like reason number 1 is the biggest problem. My biggest challenge is teens who are forced to take lessons by their parents but have no interest in piano. I teach a lot of Asian families where all three kids take piano lessons. One of them might really like it but the other two are forced to do it. I regularly talk to the parents and suggest stopping lessons or not doing exams because it's pointless but I feel that all they care about is the status quo, that is, they can tell their friends that their kid is taking Grade exam level X. The kids all tell me they don't want to have lessons but the problem is that in most of these cases, even if I give them something 'fun' like Disney or other tunes, they won't practise them. What is even worse, is that parents keep pushing the exams even though they never tell the kids to sit down and practise, they just assume that by paying for the lessons, the exams will magically happen without any work.
@ColourfulKeysАй бұрын
This is where I just put my foot down, to be honest. I decide when students can do an exam, not the parents. And I don’t let students start if I think the parent is making them do it. I know it’s tough though if you need to keep the students financially!

Do you have tips for releasing that tension? I have transfer students this year whose hands look like your initial example!! They have many other gaps so we've been working on a few at a time, but I'd like to focus on technique sooner than later!
@ColourfulKeys2 ай бұрын
There’s no easy way, it needs to be built from the ground up. Start with basic technique exercises and once they are able to play the exercises without tension you can start gently encouraging that in their pieces too.
