I've always loved the late Percy Sledge's 1966 original. This was done during the Covid lockdowns and Austin's (now wife) Amberly was in the studio (that's who he's looking at). The writer of the song had been through a bad break-up and wrote "I gave you everything I had"; Austin sings "I'll give you everything I've got). A subtle but significant change.

I just wanted to let you know that no matter how many times I watch this,I too cry, Thank you for your warm reaction.

Late on Christmas Eve,1914, men of the British soldiers heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing carols and patriotic songs and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches. The following day, British,French and German soldiers met in no man's land and exchanged gifts, took photographs and some played impromptu games of football. They also buried casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts. The truce lasted for two days. When their superiors found out,they sent some soldiers away to other places,some ran to not have to fight any longer.The rest were shot right there and then for refusing orders to fight against those they had made friends with.

Thanks for your heartfelt reaction 🌟. For many of these soldiers, the truce was not just for one day. They refused to fire on their new friends, or they aimed their guns too high to kill. The commanders had to move these troops, split them up, etc. The German command knew by December 1914 (when they said the war would be over), that they had lost the war, but kept it going to "save face." Well, the Kaiser saved his face, but millions of people, animals, and beautiful land were all destroyed due to a few monarchs (related to each other through Queen Victoria). The moral of the story: Avoid letting "leaders" lead us to war. These WW1 soldiers had the most sane, practical solution: Just stop fighting. We must remember them, and as Charles Dickens wrote in A Christmas Carol, keep Christmas in our hearts all year long. No war.
