At 2:40, St John's College, I did 7 years there in the 1960's. During that time we actually had a sandpit for high jump and long jump where that estate car is parked. The school dining room is in the old brick building behind with the science labs on the 2 floors above. All closed down now, I expect the Castle will survive but don't hold much luck for the rest of the site.

Amazing photos.. i live in Newport but i know this area very well. I was 4 when the bridge opened so i just missed going on the ferry. Until recently the old ticket office was still there but they demolished the lot for one of them idiotic "flood defence" schemes. MILLIONS of pounds wasted and stuff that should have been listed destroyed..

Remember it well. At 'Point 3.41' the police attended a wandering swan in the Canoe Lake area. The AJS Police divisional motorcycle herding the swan ETP84C, I regularly rode the sister motorcycle ETP85C based at Cosham! These were the days of Portsmouth having its own City Police Force.

In 1967 I started working on the Severn Wye Cable Tunnel, machine tunneling started from behind the service station at Aust and made it's way under the Severn Bridge to Beachley. A second tunneling machine had started on the Wye section to New House in Wales. The rock proved too hard for the machines and so drill and blast commenced from New House and Beachley to keep on target. I joined a group of water skiers who used the old Aust ferry slip way beside the bridge to launch our boats and would ski at high tides. All great fun and we even skied on Boxing day, the landlord of The Ferry Boat Inn supplied us with warming coffees and large brandies afterwards.

Beautiful, wonderful, these old statues that I, as a Dutchman, could not have known about, I drove for years in England with flowers and plants and later frozen ones, both via the tunnel hundreds of times and also from Dunkirk to Dover, I have also been able to drive on that Severn bridge many times. . Indeed England has changed a lot, a little too much crime, especially around Leeds, Manchester, etc., but elsewhere you were warned not to spend the night there with your truck and then you were guided to an area that was surrounded by a fence of up to 4 meters high, really bizarre!! It doesn't cost the people anything to prevent further crin=minality and don't blame them!!! In time I would like to go south to England again with a caravan as I have been retired for years, thanks for the images, chapeau!! Greetings from the Netherlands!!

0:40 - Clarence Pier and beach, Southsea. I suspect this will be Bembridge Lifeboat Station which still survives today. It was one of a handful of lifeboat stations on the island. The boats are too close to identify anything but the beach at 2:45 looks to be Bembridge / St. Helen's near where this station was. 2:52 - I've seen a postcard of this lane / street which is Bembridge. 3:00 - That's Whitecliff Bay top left and this photo is taken from where the caravan site now it at the top of the down. 3.:20 - Looks familiar but hard to make out. 3:27 - I can't make out what this is - it's too bright I'm afraid. Looks like an entranceway / archway / folly? Yes I see it now at 3:34 - this will be inside Carisbrooke Castle - lots of old pics online if you want to look. 3:42 - Another shot of Whitecliff Bay - again looking west. 5:03 - The Avenue - I'm sure that was the title of that postcard showing the lane (shown earlier). Check out Bembridge Ducie Avenue on ebay and compare the postcard. It's the very same - you can even see the same tree with a branch over the road on the left! Some of the later photos are obviously on some farm. There's an IOW History Facebook Group (I am not a member) that might help you with regard to the houses / buildings shown here.
