Listening and digesting a new Opeth album is quite a biscuit to chew. I listened like 6 times yesterday. For me this is (by far?) the most dynamic and flavour richened album ever by Opeth. Being masters of transistions and blending various styles they still really surprise on this album in versitality. For me it was like watching a really great movie or having a 16 meals dinner with asorted carefully picked wine for each meal. Spontaneously, paying respect to the complexity and time to digest a new Opeth album, this is nothing short of a masterpiece! Since one single Opeth song often contains enough material for like 3-5 songs I would say this album contains not only 8 killer songs, but 8 serial-killer songs! Master of masterpiece!

Listened to it all the way through last night, 10/10 for me. And I’m a 20+ year fan, typical Oldpeth guy. This was the best case scenario for us fans who wanted growls again. And it’s not just a little fan service. This is HEAVY. Epic. Theatrical. It’s a whole new era, it feels like

Respect your opinion but this albums sounds nothing like ICV or any other Opeth record. Idk what you're smoking. Only similarities the 2 albums have are string and key sections. This probably their most consistent album since Blackwater Park imo
@riffreverence4 күн бұрын
We all hear things differently, and while this album definitely has somewhat unique sound, compared to the rest of their discography, I still think that it shares a lot of similarities with ICV, expanding on that sound and adding something new as well. It's a really tight release for sure, but I don't think it's more consistent than any of the records before Heritage, apart from Watershed maybe. But, that's just my opinion, I still think this is a great record, and I can't really expect more from Opeth in 2024. They feel rejuvenated here.
@Zuracooking3 күн бұрын
@riffreverence fair enough. By consistent i meant none of the songs are skipped. For example, I don't listen to Hex omega, porcelain heart and coil as much as I hear the rest of the Watershed, same goes with ghost reveries. I tend to only listen to Atonement, Hours of wealth and isolation years depending on the mood. But this album feels like Blackwater Park bcz I can listen to it on shuffle too and I wouldn't skip any song. Even Deliverance has the same problem. Damnation feels like the only start to end consistent record apart from the ones mentioned. ofc this is only my experience and opinion.

For me the ones I enjoy the most are: 1. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - for me this the Cure's greatest album with their widest variety, greatest number of catchy and timeless pop tunes, like Just Like Heaven, Why can't I Be You and Hot, Hot hot, combined with my favorite brooding and in your face numbers too filled with defiance like Fight and the awesome Hendrix wah wah songs like The Kiss and All I Want to illuminate the highlights. This is the best time tunnel album for me too taking me in a journey back to autumn 1987 when this played in my dorm among the budding goths dressed in black with the long cyclops bangs on one side covering one of their eyes as a sophomore at university. 2. Head on the Door really close second for me and best compliment for Kiss Me Kiss Me but Baby Screams also shows the harder defiant edge. In Between Days and Blood are great pop tracks, Push and Kyoto with its haunting eastern erotic influences are great. 3. Disintegration- really like this album Pictures of You connects with me the deepest since a horrible brutal tragedy to a beautiful soul named Junko Furuta happened the same year the album was made in late 1988 and early 1989 and pictures of her are the best way to remember her beloved but bittersweet memory. One of my favorite Cure songs. Other favorites are the mystical intensity of Fascination Street and the magical pop song Lovesong with the melodic violin embellishments. 4. Wish

Smiths voice sounds great, the production is a vast improvement on the previous 2 records but my is it tedious... its like a tribute band trying to do the cure... the lyrics. lost, cold, alone, dark, its the end... its all been said and done before.... the album is clearly going to be a big success so there will have to be a follow up... fast forward a few years.. it'll be i'm lost, alone, its dark, its cold, its the end...
@pinkyfloydyfan115 күн бұрын
Mr. AllMusic published a very elaborate description and review! Your’s too. The Cure with this album demonstrate perfectlythe full extent of this high-quality opus. I fully agree with the review. This is one of The Cure's best albums with: 1. Pornography; 2. Disintegration; 3. Songs...; 4. The head...; 5. Kiss me... Several other reviews mention that this album is beautiful, but depressing. This album is more than that. The atmosphere, the sounds and the content form the expression of an inspired and skillfully presented work. That these critics consider the album depressing is an opinion, but the subjects treated and chosen go in the direction of a tragedy. When an artist chooses to talk about suicide, death, the end of things, it cannot be otherwise! Besides, if we focus on the titles alone, we find the essence of the subject: ... alone... nothing is forever... fragile... war... nodrone... never... end... There is nothing joyful there!!! Once the subject is understood, we enter the musical world and that is where EVERYTHING makes sense! The dissonant guitars, the repetitive and bewitching drums, the heavy bass, the atmospheric synths... everything conjures to transport us to the afterlife, if only we are sensitive to it. So I will dance on the Endsong as a man alone before the fate of the world with dark glasses that are worth as much as those of the pleasant but superficial ditties of the current songs and... so sad by their scope! The Cure deals with sad things, it is true, but my god it is joyful to get carried away and fly away with them!!! I will be at their next show in Quebec to celebrate their vision... and I will not be the only one... living from this collective divergence, shared with the joy in my heart of dancing on the sadness of this world!

I had a mixed reaction to "Alone" when I first heard it. I didn't think it was interesting enough to go on for three minutes before the vocals kick in. Like you, I wasn't crazy about that drum sound - at first. Now I love the song. I just needed to get used to it. Given time, it has revealed more subtle details and it does indeed set the tone for the album quite well. It works well as an opening song. When I first heard it, I didn't know it was the opener, and I needed that context. This will teach me to wait for the whole fucking album to come out! 😆

Agreed about Boris Williams. Jason Cooper is totally capable of pulling off the live shows at this point, but his drumming style just does not complement The Cure style of songwriting as well as Boris Williams. On a couple of the songs he sounds like a child beating pots and pans randomly, whereas Boris style was not a distraction and fit perfectly into the tracks giving them a dancy edge

We agree on so much with one exception, Harris' decision to not master AMOLD ,for me at least, was a great decision, I absolutely love that "real" sound in an age of auto tuning and over compression it really stands out and I believe it's their last truly great album, powerslave will always be no.1 for me but A Matter of Life and Death probably is the album I listen to the most over the last few years, easily a top 5 and depending how I'm feeling , top 3 along with powerslave and killers. One other note, most of the writing and recording was done together in studio over a month period that really gives that organic feel and showcases the talent and greatness of this band. Great list! Personally, i'd put "Kicking against the pricks" and "your funeral my trial" a little bit higher (yes, kickins against the pricks is a "covers" record, but has some great songs like "muddy water"). Another thing that's interesting: i never cared much for "the boatman's call" - when it came out, i really hated it, i thought it was very mellow and boring. I've come to like it more, but i don't think is one of their best albums. In an interview, Mick Harvey told that Nick Cave wanted a certain mood for the record and insisted not to include the "rockier" songs recorded for the album sessions. That's a shame. If you drop some of the weaker songs (like "green eyes" or "there is a kingdom") and replace them with some great songs recorded on the same sessions ("come into my sleep" and "babe, i got you bad") you'd have a much more balanced record. Shame on you, Nick Cave :)

I have sorceress dead last too but it has solely to do with the overly muddy/bassy production. I really think it would be more well received if the production wasn’t the worst. Btw you should try listening to watershed and heritage back to back with headphones on and it will make heritage 1000x better. Listen to pale communion after that and it all might finally click like it did for me after 13 years. Trust me, I gave up on opeth after heritage too but now heritage and pale communion are some of my favorites. Heritage especially is definitely a headphones album though, the dynamics and atmosphere are unparalleled imo.
