The only working copy I have is on an old laptop of mine and I've got it through the original CD-Rom. I wish I knew how to get it into a file extractor though... I mean, I can zip it into a .rar, but I doubt it would work, unless it would be recognize as an .iso file...

@@NortShip01 I found it somehow (again). Had to use UniExtractor to extract data1 .cab file so I wouldn't need to run setup (which can't run on new OS). I'm using wined3d and ddraw files to run it, otherwise there's blackscreen after the FMV. Also, I'm running it on fat32 formatted USB. I hope I won't be having issues with the mouse again. There's F10 you can press while ingame that locks the cursor but still runs the game. Wonder if that fixes it when it occurs. 🤷‍♂

They intentionally designed the Hubrin to be so OP. It takes quite a lot of effort to survive them if you're not a Klingon.

Indeed, mainly thanks to their long range. At least the Federation has their Mobile Shield Generators for away teams, and the Romulans will have to use their Cloaked Tanks and APCs.

This game has so many bugs, it's hilarious. But it had it's charm nevertheless. I wish the source would be released so we could have some working version on modern hardware.

The Nak's fire rate increase is normal for all stationary photon (non-turret) units firing at stationary targets in STNW. They all do that. Phaser weapon units usually fire off a longer beam instead. Idk if it's a design choice or a game bug.

Actually I've observed multiple cases where any unit, Phaser, Disruptor or Photon tank, has a rate of fire increase overall when they're not in a 'good' position to attack their intended target and just fire away at the nearest target in range. With the Cloaked APC this rate of fire nearly matches the Warbird's, and a Hubrin Tank's rate of fire can match that of its Fortress. Here's a nice showcase: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKetiX6BrMmjosU

Hey. I see your channel is full of STNW content, which is great. I am curious tho, how and on what are you playing the game? I am trying to solve the weird mouse issue this game is giving me, where the mouse starts acting weird, leaving me with no option but to exit the game. Every damn time. I've tried everything, running it on USB formatted to FAT32, tried the infamous US 1.1 patch, tried the version from The Collection Chamber site, tried from original CDs, even emulated Win 95/98/2000 for it. Nothing. Either it's the runtime library C++ error, either the mouse decides to be a b*tch.

I run the game (and recorded the footage) on an old laptop I have which runs Windows Vista. To be fair I've had my share of problems, even where my mouse flips out when trying to select stuff, of which I have a video of as well. @@NortShip01 I read last night that setting the game to work on multiple CPU cores can cause problems. So setting it to work on one should do it. Also, the game doesn't like NTFS format, but rather uses FAT32 one, and priority should be set to low. This 'should' fix the game entirely with crashes and mouse problems. At least, person that had those issues fixed them with that. Trying all of this these days and trust me it's a pain in the *ss. It's a great game though. Do try this on Vista and feel free to share the results. Also, can you share the link of that video where you had that mouse problem in particular?

@@NortShip01 Ah, the same problem here. I don't know if this is the programming bug that's inside the game or that the game really depends on what you run it. I see some playthroughs of this game around youtube and so far I haven't seen anyone having any issues with game's interface. It would be good if someone would patch it more. The source code is out so it's about time somebody does it.

You mean that Shield Generator next to the Colony Hub? Simple; I razed the Advanced Power Generator that was initially present there, and I was able to use the build space that became available to place a Shield Generator and two turrets there, to defend the Colony Hub from attacks by a Metar Bur more effectively.

I always start with vehicle yard so to produce more construction bees. The default starting 4-5 pieces is way to little and buildings must be queued for too long IMHO.

Same thing I do in regular campaign, getting the Vehicle Yard for 6 additional Construction Bees and at least 2 Cargo Bees as I tend to place 2 Resource Processors with 2 mines in most missions.

I remember some old preview texts annoucing the game in computer magazines that the game would feature a real-time terrain which would change after the meteor fall… plainly speaking there were plans to make a hole in a ground after a meteor hit during design. Sadly to no avail.

Indeed, which is why I have an APC around to always keep an eye on the Hangar and have the Capture option triggered; the Warbird ignores the building if the Capture option is selected, even when it's done with a Klingon or Federation APC if you trigger the Warbird's 'assistance' in their sides of the mission. And on other rare occasions it can lead to the Warbird itself being destroyed if the Hubrin Fortress gets more shots in during the Warbird's second pass.

@@NortShip01This is smart move to be sure, but player no need to know this, right? I mean the warbird is your ally, right? You're not supposed to anticipate a flaw in the mission. When I was younger I usualy just thought of this mission as a time-restricted mission: to capture the hangar before the ship interferes lol The second part: true, if the warbird is dumb enough to fly long enough in fortress’ fire arc it will perish. I wonder if by the rare occasion the warbird can actually defeat the fortress?...

The less spectacular bug is when vehicle yard out of sudden stops manufacturing vehicles. The production queue (can be viewed in Colony Hub) is there but the first vehicle in queue is there… in queue… and the progress bar does not come up. I learnt that building a lot of vehicles and therefore adding them to queue is dangerous and better to be avoided. Better to build 5-6 vehicles is max.

It's quite an annoyance indeed. It's weird that I've NEVER experienced that bug when playing as the Klingons though. And even when I play as the Federation or Romulans, it only happens occasionally. I usually stick with what I have, unless I do need to build vehicles to complete a certain objective. Cloaked APCs are my favorite as these are completed rather quickly and with their high speed, rate of fire and ability to cloak... Second comes the Klingon Disruptor Battery, and then the Federation Advanced Artillery + Mobile Shield.

But Metar have many scattered bases in this mission. You captured 5 portals and other bases did not send units to attack? That's very unusual.

The Metar have only 4 scattered bases. 3 of them contain two portals each, the last one has only the Metar Temple and 3 Colony Cores. This is where the SPEED of the Cloaked APCs come in as well as their rate of fire. I've calculated that once the mission starts, you'd have about 3.5 to 4 minutes of time before the Metar come swarming out of the Portals in big numbers (groups of 6 Metar Burs, 6 Advanced Naks, 4-6 Advanced Deas, 4 Advanced Yats, 4 Advanced Snipers and 2 Metar Ras have been observed by yours truly when they do come out, even after I manage to destroy at least TWO portals). And since the Romulan base starts with 8 Cloaked APCs alongside 6 Cloaked Tanks, 2 Artilleries, 1 regular APC, Science Vehicle and Ground Scout...

Each time I encounter something odd, fun or just for the heck of it, I record the footage and feel like showing it off, just proving the potential that the game had, yet the lack of proper QA Testing and the time to iron out the bugs and adding in other things that are missing in the game proper practically killed it... oh, if only I knew how to do some programming...

Indeed. It's the main reason I play this mission directly after 'Into the Arena' and 'Absent Friends', since the colony size limit gets carried over in subsequent missions. So when I start this mission with the size limit of 90, I only build the Construction and Vehicle Yards, Security Center, 1 Resource Processor, Science Station and Transporter Pad, leaving the remaining spaces for Advanced Power Generators, 2 Shield Generators and the turrets. And if I need just a bit more space for a second Resource Processor, I just attack the Taubat base north of the Romulan base.

@@NortShip01 Yeah, but in order to attack the northern Taubat base you have to manufacture more tanks and stuff… will that justify the cost of building another resource processor? In my opinion this mission is not that long and defensive in nature so I don’t need resources to be mined quickly.

Besides, eith a second processor, resource gathering goes a bit quicker, so I don't have to wait much to keep building turrets and (especially) Cloaked APCs to fight the battles. I just want my base to be secure first and having a back-up site on the smaller bases I have.

Glad you agree. 😁 Usually the Metar Starship gets obliterated over the Federation Base (even when I play as Romulans or Klingons), this is one of the rare occasions the Romulans shoot the thing from the sky.

I guess that's the reason. It's happened on more than one occasion that a vehicle emerges out of the Yard just as it's destroyed, with that last vehicle then exploding for no reason. xD

That's a shame. It's funny; in all the years I've played this game, I NEVER lost my hub ONCE. Sure I did have missions that failed, but that's due to the destruction of other objectives that I was supposed to watch over/capture/whatever, not because my hub got destroyed. Perhaps it's the solid strategy that I employ that makes my bases practically impenetrable once everything's set up, next to exploiting AI movement.

Indeed, I honestly wish there was some kind of map/mission/level editor that would allow for custom missions and such. would have loved to see this game expanded upon.

Indeed, especially how buildings under construction are invincible until completed, so enemy units keep firing at them... xD

Indeed, simply because unlike other vehicles, they can pretty much fire at anything what's directly in front of them, with a bit of an off-set to the left and right when in their field of view...

@@NortShip01 Yes, like in WW2, some vehicles looked like tanks, but wasn't them, they were mobile artilleries

No problem at all. :D Was quite an interesting one to boot at that; this way you can select the corresponding APC without having to tilt the camera a certain way in case it's hidden beyond the building itself in the usual camera view.

the most illogical bug in the whole game… it’s like vehicle yard’s workers go on strike… quite frequently so… :/

Indeed. It's odd that I've encountered this bug occasionally whenever I play as either the Federation or the Romulans though. Had it never experienced whenever I play as the Klingons.

I must admit that I only had this happen whenever I assign an officer to the structure most of the time, so I don't know whether this is because of build speed or just a bug that doesn't register one completed vehicle as actually 'completed' as it won't vanish from the build list, even though said vehicle does emerge from the Vehicle Yard itself.

More and more I find that as an exploit developers didn’t forsee. Technicaly Metar should be able to detect cloacked units… since they can jam tricorders - it‘s like their own cloaking device.

Indeed, even though only the Advanced Dea can jam Tricorders. And the only time the Cloaked units are vulnerable is that moment where they have to either engage or drop the cloak overall.
