This was playing automatically on youtube and I didn't know who was the conductor. I got transfered in something above the reality of the senses. Karajan gets a lot of hate lately and it's a trend amongst musicians to put him down just to make them feel relevant. I doubt anyone will be able to match this performance of this piece. And of course that is the case with many many many other pieces of music.

Brahms could never even imagine a symphony like this.

Not convincing. Sounds like a far lesser composer is trying his damnedest to pass himself off as Bruckner. Just doesn't seem authentic. Strikes me as something less Bruckner, than Brucknerian. Thematic development does not go very far, something A.B. would have never let slip. We should be allowed to hear the first attempt at recreating the last movement by Fritz Oese, in 1940. It's got to have been better than this performance. Was it Rattle's first attempt at anything Bruckner? Not a good idea.
