Mine has 72 strings. I hate tuning it. I use a pick to pluck each string. Fortunately it stays in tune pretty well. but I love playing and its worth it.
@aleedulcimerАй бұрын
Agreed! Now that my current dulcimer is a few years old, it holds tune for a while. Thank goodness! :) Definitely worth it when I take the time to tune it! (And it's time to do that. lol)

Where can I get sheets music of O'Carolan for hammered dulcimer?

I got this one from a Quarantune workshop. I've gotten others from random books I've picked up throughout the years and others from my teacher.

I often can practice only between 9 and 10 pm due to my work. My neighbour asked me about my harp-like sounding instrument. And if I could play only at the weekend when he would be off. He did not say that I practice too late in the evening. He wanted me to practice only at the weekend when he would not hear anything. But he had to admit that the sound is soft and gentle. (I play with the leather side of my hammers.) I kindly answered that practicing only at the weekend is not possible.

You're welcome! If you have any local farmers markets or similar venues, reach out to them early. My particular market books their musicians in March. One year they even reached out to me in February.

Thanks! This is a hammered dulcimer. It's easiest to buy one straight from a company that make them. Some of the best known companies are Masterworks, Dusty Strings, and Songbird. There's a bunch of others if you want to shop around though.

Hi!!! I was wondering if you have any ideas I could use for substitutes for hammers 😅
@aleedulcimer4 ай бұрын
I've never actually tried using anything but hammered dulcimer hammers on my instruments. However, I once saw a video here on KZbin of someone trying all sorts of weird things to play the Irish Washerwoman. Some of the things they tried were pens and hammers made out of Legos. Haha. You might want to look and see if that video is still available.

I got to play very briefly at a farmers' market last summer - on the other kind of dulcimer; I hope to do more of that this summer. I have played at ren faires: pretty much all day long, often to no audience. Paying dues, paying dues...

Farmers Markets can definitely be fun! The one I talk about in this video went pretty well and lots of people stopped to listen. I went back to the same market last summer though and didn't get much in the way of audience. I actually just signed up for a music slot at that market for the upcoming summer, so I hope it goes better this time!

There is a very good tuning app called "Tonal Energy Tuner", very precise and it comes together with a metronome. So one does not need to buy an extra tuner. How did you tune the 5th interval?

That's too bad that they don't make the black top anymore. It's really helpful in certain lighting. Best of luck finding an instrument! Have you looked into Songbird dulcimers? I find that they have a similar tone to TK O'Brien. I'm not sure if they do black tops though.

Yes, I would be interested! For the last several years, you've been just enough ahead of me in skill level that I'm challenged, while not so far ahead that I'm lost. I have improved tremendously because of you! I live off the beaten path, and teachers don't exist here, so you've been my de facto instructor.

You have to have surpassed me while I took a year off! I also live in an area without any in person teachers. The teacher I was working with (and hope to be back in contact with soon!) met with me over Zoom. These days, I believe most hammered dulcimer teachers have an online lesson option because they're so few and far apart as are the students. There's also another Quarantune coming up in February and class registration is open for another few days!

What model of dulcimer do you play? It has a very nice tone. I just learned that piece yesterday and posted it on KZbin. Pretty amazing that a musical piece written 293 years ago still has people doing their own interpretations of it to this day.
@aleedulcimer6 ай бұрын
I agree that it's pretty amazing that we're still playing pieces from so long ago. Turlough O'Carolan is my favorite composer to play on dulcimer and he's also from a long time ago. In this video, I'm playing my TK O'Brien 13/12 dulcimer. I have since purchased a Master Works Russel Cook edition. I've had it since 2021 and I love it!
@ErichOverhultz6 ай бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJiydpegn7yIaZosi=6OCnE7u7TBMNI0CV This is me playing it....mine is a 12/11 TK O'Brien. Since you went to the larger model, did you find it a big adjustment going to strings that are closer together? I play a few O' Carolan pieces, like Carolan's Draught, Planxty George Brabizon, and Si Beagh Si More. Can you imagine making a living as a blind harpist back then?!!!
@aleedulcimer6 ай бұрын
I'll check it out. Thanks for the link! I definitely had an adjustment period when I moved to the larger dulcimer, but it didn't take too long to figure out. The biggest difference was the placement of some notes changed, so I had to adjust the way I played a few tunes. I cannot imagine life as a blind harpist, but O'Carolan definitely made it work!
