I just recently adopted a 10 year old dog and she's deaf. What do we do if she just backs up instead of sitting when doing the hand motion to tell her to sit. She sat once and i gave her a treat but now she's not doing it. 😢

I really appreciate this video, thank you so much. I taught my old man (12 yrs old, lg breed) basic hand signs as a puppy. But now he’s going deaf and can only hear you if you are close to him. I want to teach him most of these signs now. And if we get a new puppy I want to teach them just for the reason of my old man.

Wow I needed to see this but a lil slower. Where did you learn this ? I’ll try n slow the video down. I’m losing my hearing n my puppy im thinking selective or certain tones or whatever. I’m having that problem. 😢

Definitely a killdeer. I hear them all the time. Merlin is a great app for IDing birds. I rather enjoy using it. It has an awesome sound ID feature that will identify birds by sound. That's how i first figured out what this sound was, and how i can recognize the call of a California scrub jay from a block away.

It's a killdeer. They got their name because of this particular call that they make, since to some people it sounds like they're saying "kill deer" over and over. I would say that it's actually very unlikely that the killdeer itself is stressing your domestic birds out. It's a lot more likely that a predator is setting off both the killdeer and your flock. This is a killdeer that's been startled, so something alarmed it and made it react, and that same critter is likely bothering your domestic birds as well. Could be rats, weasels, raccoons, or something bigger. There's a lot more activity at night in the Spring and Summer than in Fall and Winter. Predators are more active, and so are other nesting birds, insects, etc. It makes even animals that can't see at night, like domestic fowl, a lot more restless and wary. I grew up in an area where killdeer nested in every single grassy field, so it's a super familiar night noise for me. If they're startled, they'll fly or run away making this call. They also use it to distract predators from their nest, so if they think you're going to find it, they'll run a little way away and pretend to have a broken wing, drooping it and kind of limping along. They want any potential predator to follow them, thinking they're an easy target. They'll keep running away, only just out of reach until the predator is far enough away from the nest and then take off and fly to safety.

It's a killdeer. They are both night birds that are named for their calls, but you can tell it's a killdeer because it has the two-note call. It's saying "kill deer" over and over.

@@margaretlally9747 no, they're very different birds. They're not even related. Mixing the names up probably isn't uncommon, though. You can look both birds up and see the difference.

Thank You for sharing, I use hand signs with my dogs,they can get distracted when We are outside trying to tell them something and I want them to concentrate on what I’m telling them. So they will see that additional I’m trying to tell them something, talking with my hands..it comes a bit easy to me because I’m Italian too!! LOL👍❤️

I adopted a female deaf Australian Blue Heeler a few months ago she was abandoned 2 times and I knew I wouldn’t abandon her. I had a couple surgeries and just now I’m ready to start training her she is 1 1/2 years old do you think she is still young enough to train all these signs to her. They said that she knew a few hand signals but I have tried them but she doesn’t really respond. They were using the number one sign for sit and all she would do is back up for me. She is VERY reactive and protective and also a bite risk. I need to work on her not bolting after people she doesn’t know and biting them. She has bitten when someone she didn’t know just walked into our home which we did not tell her it was wrong because this person was not supposed to be in our home but she has pushed the door open when a relative didn’t latch it and chased a neighbor down and grabbed her pant legs. I don’t want her to be put down for biting someone it’s my greatest fear but I don’t want her sequestered to the house because she might bite someone. This poor baby was abused and I think that is why she is this way but she deserves a chance at life. I went to look at muzzles to buy and it broke my heart just looking at them. Any advice you can give me I will be grateful for thank you for this video 💜🐾

Trying to learn a new language is hard and I can't seem to find a good partner for practice, language requires constant practice which is why, I imagine I've never actually succeeded. Hopefully, because I also need to focus more on my pet's training too I can do a little bit of both and at least become practiced with a few and get a good base started.

We just adopted a deaf Akita/Pit Bull mix neutered male, almost a year and half old. Been with us 2 days. Good temperament, little stubborn, or just not interested in looking at us for information (signs). We got him and he only knew SIT & COME. I'm sure there will be a huge adjustment period learning new signs, tricks, skills, rules, etc.
@SomeLikeItHomegrown3 жыл бұрын
yep he just has to learn that good things come from paying attention to you ... he needs to learn to come to you when you sign his name or if you just sign come here by pointing to the ground by your side and treats come with that -- start with a smaller confined space that he is already used to and wait until he is a few feet away A. sign his name sign B. point to the ground near you WITH the treat in your hand while point. If he looks your way show him the treat the first time & when he comes to your side sign YES and open your palm to give it to him with lots of happy love and pets for a few seconds. Then wait a couple minutes when he thinks the treats are all done and do it again. On day 1 just do that over and over alll day at random. He will start to pick up on the motion of his name sign and pointing to the side of you means come to you (for treats) and gradually you will add more training requests to it in order to earn the treat, once he understands that in the 1 room start doing it in other rooms and then start in a confined yard too and eventually you will ease off the treats too. If he isnt interested in treats you have to find what makes him happy - sometimes it is a ball or toy instead :) Good luck! & Congrats!

How did you teach them their names?
@SomeLikeItHomegrown3 жыл бұрын
We played a game with them as puppies. starting out sitting on the floor with our legs open and the puppy between us. We would sign their name sign one at a time between 2 or 3 of us if we had a visitor (precovid days)...if they came to us they got the treat & attention. If they went to someone who didnt say their name we didnt do much of anything and no treat...specifically while training them to know their name sign. Then it was a game of who will say my name?? I will run to them and sit. Thats the initial way. There is a whole additional process to integrating individual names to packs that we did. The dogs have to know sit and stay well. In order to get their food, or go out the door, or get off their dog bed...we would have them stay sitting until they had their name called. If they moved prematurely they had to go back to where they were supposed to be and they were then called last. (we had 4 dogs).

Hey there! I'm getting a puppy in May and I'd like to teach her ASL. I have degenerative hearing loss and require hearing aids currently. Crowds and anywhere noisy is difficult for me to interpret what's going on in conversation around me so ASL is very helpful. I want to know if it was difficult to teach your dogs sign language and also, is it possible to teach both English and ASL at the same time? Thanks

actual ASL! our dog is hearing but our son is not :) we'll use snack for treat/you use special. heel! we'll use the sign for dog LOL. stop/enough. calm down for us is hands thumb to chest other hand thumbs at bottom of ribcage, palms facing down, pulse in a calming pace and visual in out breath. we do 'come' with both hands, pointer fingers out and jutting in to space requested. Dance sign is so fun! Thank you for this video! you have great ASL knowledge!
