you'll never be shit mate. that little melodic run you do that ends up on a sharpened note (i think) near the end of round blue glasses after the drums tail off is a stroke of genius in my ears. 🙌🏻

On Tuesday I came to your most musically marvellous and life affirming gig in London. I think if the prat who had made such a smug irrelevant had been there the audience would have led him by the said item of clothing! ( the only downer for me was that I live in Kerry and I was definitely trumped by the lady from Argentina:)

When I was in my teens, studying jazz theory at Oakland University (Detroit area) a long time ago, an excellent instructor (and musician) pointed out to the class-Learn everything you can fit in your head. Study theory, learn the modes and the standards in all 12 keys etc etc. …then forget all about it all and just play. Took me quite a few years before I understood what he was saying. it’s about just being Zen - be in the moment. Pat Metheny has said it’s a lot like talking out loud or having a conversation. One doesn’t give thought to spoken words… they just flow…

I first listened to NCT back in 2012. They got me into the jazz trio, and they were the first music that I ever felt was my own personal music that I had discovered on my own. So glad they’re making music again! 🥲

I knew I was a pianist when I was a kid but school refused lessons (couldn’t afford piano). I gave up thinking it was over for me. Then became a drummer, then a flautist. Great to hear your story. Wish you would be my teacher.

@@neilcowleymusic @neilcowleymusic - Ah - that doesn't surprise me now you mention it. I was in a noisy guitar band called The Zimmer Frames. It was a bit too noisy for me really. I played mostly classical flute, with some jazzy bits, e.g Claude Bolling. Now I sing in a proper choir. We recently sand Coleridge's requiem, which was pretty sublime. Your song, Marbles reminds me a bit of Arvo Part at the beginning. Is there some influence there?
@neilcowleymusicАй бұрын
I'm definitely a fan of Arvo Part. Love his memorium to Benjamin Britten. I hear more Shostakovich in Marble perhaps but thats not a million miles away from Arvo.
@chriswhitehead2860Ай бұрын
That was brilliant. Thank you. So interesting to hear where the influences are - all of which are the same for me. It's really good to hear you trace these links that I've also always felt - the weird funkiness of Bach that sits with the rigour, etc. I'm an amateur composer and I try to find my own voice but you're such an influence that I end up sounding like a duff version of you. More please: keep going.
@neilcowleymusicАй бұрын
I'm sure that's not true! Glad you hear the funk in Bach too.
