One thing to keep in mind is there are multiple gear ratios between your engine and the ground, and they build on each other. Your tire size is the "true" final ratio, technically speaking. A bigger rear tire will have you moving faster at a given engine speed. But most people don't put tire size in these calculations. Between the crankshaft and the clutch on that bike is a (if I remember correct) 28:61 (61/28=2.179) primary reduction ratio. Then your gear selection - for example, if 5th gear is .850. Then you have your final drive ratio, which is the sprockets (42/15=2.8). So to find your overall ratio, you multiply them together. 2.179*0.850*2.8 = 5.186 turns of the engine to make the wheel spin 1 turn. Now, when you change your rear sprocket by 1 tooth, it may look like a 1% change the way you're doing the math (which is not wrong, just a different way), but divide the other direction and use it to find the overall ratio, and you'll find that it's more than a 1% change. If I do that math, at 15:43 it's about a 2.4% change from stock. At 13:43 it's about a 18.1% change from stock. So that's pretty huge!

Your bottomed out on the drive shaft and you're coming out with 5 1/2 if you do go 6 inches you'll have binding and twist your drive shaft or destroy your u-joints you go 5 in if you want a half inch play.

Dang right we are 😅, we are giving this truck a new life. It's being brought back to pull that camper. We could have let it just rotted away in that old school paint you are so fond of, but a second chance at life comes with a new wrapper. Pretty good trade off. Hang in there maybe we will win you over.

Jason may just win you over with the final product. thanks!

I went from 15/42 to a 14/42 right away on my new DR. Now that I have the engine completely uncorked in full hotrod setup I'm actually thinking of going to 16/42 which is what the early DRs were from factory. Just curious to see if smoother, quieter, better fuel mileage.

Hey Kyle. Sorry for the late reply. I have had some phone issues and just got them straightened out. 3x3 is an air box mod. Google 3x3 mod dr650. It just adds three inches of intake air. The 3x3 is size of the hole, thereby making it adaptable to use a k&N filter.

Thanks for taking us a long for the ride ! I used the 14/42 sprocket ratio on our DR 650 and had a similar experience noting 60 MPH was close to what I thought the engine liked for cruising . Most of my riding is back roads with a little highway riding . I reckon at 21:50 is why Suzuki put the DR 650 out from the factory with the 15/42 sprocket ratio so it would fit in about anywhere . Do you folks have many deer in your area ? We have a lot and that's one of my biggest fear riding .

With the bed extender, would it be possible to put a gun case in the back securely? I want a Talon, but I also deer hunt. I currently have a Pioneer 700 with no issues hauling to much. I appreciate it!!

Brad, in all honesty I've seen gun racks mounted on the roll bar of 2 doors. If you have a 4 door you could utilize the roof space for placement. But with the 2 door you would not have much room for hauling. We too came from a pioneer 700 SE to a talon.. love our talon.. but it's just a toy.
