Awesome run, I love the method you use to get rid of the Mediterranean boss quickly! I'm trying to get a good run with this plane too, but it's very hard.

Thanks! I tried a number of strategies to fight the boss "legit" but settled on a quick kill because point blanking a boss with all 4 lasers is too safe and convenient. If you position yourself right you only need one bomb, or use two if you panic (like I did in loop 2). Good luck with your attempts with MaoMao! This was tough going but ultimately a rewarding clear. I'm working on a 2all with her in Sonic Wings 3 at the moment!

Doing some more testing with this set-up, I find that the second safespot (between the second and third bomb icons) is more consistently safe if you nudge yourself -just- left of center. Somehow there still can be a stray bullet that annoyingly finds its way down there. The final arm on the right can sometimes, for reasons that are unknown to me, reach to that just-left-of-center area, so nudge back to the center if it spawns (you can leave the smaller arm alive and just ignore attacking it, too). It's also important to note how I kill that left arm at around 00:44, firing before I move to the left. I have found that by not firing until I get into second position, the timing of shots is off and can die from the arms. There's a lot of little adjustments you might need to make but this is still the best way to go about the fight!

I have seen Hard and Very Hard clears here and there, though I cannot remember a video off the top of my head. I seem to recall the boss attacks being changed up in Very Hard, which is pretty interesting. The reason almost everyone sticks to Normal is because it was the Arcade default, and by far the largest measure of competition among players for score and prestige. Arcade shmup players almost never play a game outside of its default settings in order to have parity with the worldwide community of score chasers, etc.

@buzzybola I used the Model 1 emulator M1, it is relatively easy to find all the roms in a single pack. There's another older version of m1 that is a little buggy but it was the only one they savestates could be hacked into, so I practiced on one and did this run in the newer version. I think Jaimers' clear mentions which version has savestate support but if not I'll have to find it and let you know.

hell yeah you do! RayStorm is an incredible, epic shmup, one of the best, and the other two games are pretty good too! Just don't go full-on crazy with Crisis like I did =)

I kinda wish I had gotten a recording of the ending cartoon too, but that will have to wait for the stage 4 clear (tbd). And of course, beating story mode lol. I noticed that the subtitles don't always match, but after restarting the game they synced perfectly. I can't let bad subs get in the way of my enjoyment.

I had to quit at only being agonizingly close to 1CC'ing this while trying to level up the waifus. Interest didn't quite hold enough to max them all, but I had a blast while this game was my short-term obsession. Cool vid.

Thanks UBO! If I can help it I like the chance to affirm and build up other members of the community, widespread as it is. The quality came about because I got sick and tired of finding older shmup videos with horrendous 240p or worse quality being the only resource.... I will future-proof my play for any intrepid scamps that get interested down the line =)

I always thought Mao Mao's lasers were very weak, but they're actually pretty decent at point blank range. There's no indication that station core and space shuttle incurs any contact damage, since Pandora clearly does, it's certainly worth being risky. Vazeel, Pomornik, and the 2 Icefox always gives me some trouble. Honestly, Osaru is a lot more dangerous than Pandora, those big bullets are almost impossible to dodge with a slow plane like the Harrier, and that delayed bomb run won't exactly save you in time either.

On a side note, after feeding the text to Google Translate, I see Mao starts understandably nervous (the F-15 seems to be taking her to Fata Morgana’s attack sites all by itself-hardly in the Air Commander for a Day job description, or even her idol singer job description!), but sometime during Iraq, she, for lack of a better word, snaps. Sudden bravado and devil-may-care attitude, eager to shred Fata Morgana-the English translation “Who cares?” when starting Libya wasn’t quite the best idiom pick for the translators. Talk about finding her place in the world.

Funnily enough, the "Who cares?" comment (while funny) is what clued me to the fact that the Japanese text and English don't quite match up, so it's interesting to hear what you see doing some rough translation work. As for character change, maybe we can chalk that up to dream logic, eh?

@@emperorIng360 Well, she's definitely part of Project Blue in SW2...But opinion is divided as to how much it's for Project Blue's actual goals/repelling future Fata Morgana attacks, and how much trying to see Hien's uncovered face. >>; That said, the SW3 strategy guide's profile for Keith Bishop in SW1 noted that he genuinely dislikes his job. So I'm wondering if the reason he renounced piloting to be a trainer for Project Blue is because he saw Mao as exactly the kind of promising inductee he could afford to let take his place among the actual fighters.

I am learning how to best utilize her full power - if you are willing to spend a bomb, she deletes bosses with a full ammo stock before they have a chance to attack. It's dangerous though! Unfortunately it's pretty hard to get a 10,000pt max bomb bonus with her because without those bombs+ammo combo, she has a difficult time killing anything quickly. I've already improved this score by 200,000+ points so I hope to be cracking 1 million sometime soon and add the replay online. If I get lucky! Crazy to see just how much psikyo dna is in this game. Even the near-instant rank down upon power down is already here.
